Thank you, ladies. I am sure you have solved our mystery. It is a beautiful piece.

I think I would like something like that for putting a tray on for crafts or TV dinners or a little of anything. I would love to have a plan to make one. It would work for about anything that you were doing while sitting down.

I would hate to mar the wood so I would use those large black alligator clamps you can find at any home improvement store and some felt or batting covered shims.

Maybe also for cross stitch.

Wow....with the addition of a plexiglass insert and a clamp on lamp....you would have a great light box!

I think what you would do with a frame like this is thumb-tack fabric leaders to the top of the frame. You would then hand baste tapestry canvas to the leaders. Alternatively, you could tack the canvas directly to the frame. This website shows how to do the latter, but that would probably be more appropriate for a cheaper, throw-away type frame:

Yes, I believe this is what it is. I have seen these in large round frames also. They are nice for needlework.

I agree with Lonnie. I wouldn't use nails or staples on the wood!

If it were mine, I would find a handyman who could mount a light bulb underneath the glass and use it as a light box.
