I have no concept of math it just can't get thru to my brain my husband says its because my artistic side is so large there is no room for practical math.

I'd rather have the artistic side than the math any day!:)

My oldest son seems to be missing the math module in his brain. Maybe your husband is right and some brains just don't do math.

That is why I love quilting...to me it is all math. I am definitely a math head. :-)

I taught Mathematics for years and we would design quilts which I then took the ideas to my church group. We made quilts out of paper pieces and posted them around the room. The kids loved it...this was junior high age. I thought of it as "practical" math for sure.

I am an engineer, which is why I think I like quilting so much. It makes sense to me! I also like the creative side, but that comes much more slowly to me. :-)

I just always figure my brain is getting to full for much of that stuff. Good thing my DH love math

I am not good at math at all!

DogHouseMom 02-12-2011 06:17 AM

I distinguish "math" in two ways - the basics add/subtract/multiply and math designed for logic calculations (algebra and geometry both come into play in quilting). I can do the logic sequences, but not the adding/subtracting/multiplying in my head!!

I have calculators EVERYWHERE in the house and I'll grab one to multiple 7 x 4 (seriously!) because the multiplication table was purged from my hard drive (brain) when I discovered I no longer needed it with the easy access to calculators. Now I have room for other stuff in my hard drive.

The math part of my brain is definitely lacking, especially when it comes to arithmetic. I even set my cell phone so that I can access the calculator very easily. If I'm trying to figure out a quilt, I'll yell out to my husband, "what's 42 plus 105?" And he sighs and gives me the answer. It's probably laziness on my part, but it makes him feel involved in my quilting.
