I now have 44 quart jars of tomatoes!! Hurray! And there is still more out there!

bearisgray 09-09-2010 10:24 AM

Are your tomatoes in the garden still decent?

Ours are about at the end of the line.

Jim's Gem 09-09-2010 10:50 AM

I will be getting tomatoes until November or December around here.
I have not canned any, I have just been making salsa, Bruchetta, eating some and giving lots away!!!

AbbyQuilts 09-09-2010 11:08 AM

hehe I was looking for the like button like on facebook but there is none!

But needless to say
LIKE!

Enjoy! Ours did not do squat this year so we yanked them out 2 weeks ago. Don't know what the problem was, they just did not produce tomatoes. Lucious green vines with tons of blooms. It was an odd year here.

Jim's Gem 09-09-2010 11:24 AM

Our zucchini was like that. I got some at the very beginning and then 2 mos of nothing. I just picked the first one in 2 mos yesterday. I wonder if they got some kind of disease. I have a friend that said the same thing, a few at the beginning of summer and then nothing.
My tomatoes are finally turning red. We have had a cold summer with not enough heat and the tomatoes were really late this year.

Yes they are still doing good, but they are coming towards the end. My plants won't be producing any more, but there is still quite a bit that needs to ripen. I have a recipe for green tomato mincemeat that I just love! I am thinking I will pick most of the green ones and make that. I did a few years ago and it is the best mincemeat I have ever had. It called for suet but I left that out--I am glad I did.

Quilter7x 09-09-2010 12:09 PM

Good for you! I just told DH the other day that we need to can some tomatoes since we are out of them and I'm fussy when it comes to spaghetti sauce.

Great job!

We had a cold summer last year and our tomatoes didn't do very well at all. I ended up just pulling the plants up. But this year is great! It is just now turning cool, I think from the hurricane that hit Nova Scotia. We always get the tail winds from hurricanes that hit along the east coast all down through Texas. This is the first time I have known Nova Scotia to get one but it brought in a lot of cold air with it. We are suppose to get more warm weather. But I think I am just going to make mincemeat out of the green ones I have left.

Yeah, I understand. That was ours last year. Very disappointing.

bearisgray 09-09-2010 12:31 PM

A friend of mine made great pickles (similar recipe as for dill cucumber pickles) using green tomatoes.

Barbm 09-09-2010 12:32 PM

got enough zucchini frozen for the winter, made some into bread and choc. cake and grilled some.

Tomatoes are still coming on. I lost count of how many qts. and pints of sauce I've done. I also did stewed and some with peppers and onions.

Thought about getting some peaches but don't have enough people to eat them. Will get apples for sauce and pie filling.

Have onions still in the ground- their tops haven't died yet.

I love having a garden!

Barbm 09-09-2010 12:33 PM

oh- forgot- did pickles too. just 14 pints.

I made fruit mincemeat this morning. Calls for pears, raisins and lemon. But I also added apples and a few cranberries. Sure tastes good! I don't like adding the suet either. I made Green Tomato mincemeat years ago, from a Farm Journal Canning and Freezing book. The Pear Mincemeat recipe is from there also.

Its a lot cooler here in the UK and last summer was very wet so no lovely home grown veggies

This year it was lovely in the early summer, hot and dry. Just what the tomatoes and zuccini like. The tomatoes in my garden are so high, like a mini forest and we are just beginning to harvest them. Always a risk of loads of green tomato chutney!

I've only had 1 zucchini plant and it went wild. We had so many that I have been giving them away. But I do have a recipe for brownies using them. Dairy, egg and lactose free and I have also made it wheat free for a friend. I will be posting the recipe as soon as I can convert the weights to cups. So keep an eye out for the Zuccini Brownies.

I did not do a garden this year but did get a boat load of figs off the two trees at our rental property and was able to make fig presserves. I use strawberry gel in one batch and they taste just like fresh strawberries. I lvoed reading about everyone's canning, etc. Thanks for sharing.

purplefiend 09-09-2010 01:19 PM

I canned 8 qts. of tomatoes and 24 pts. of salsa, my dh grew all the peppers(4 kinds),onion, garlic and tomatoes (both yellow and red)that went into my salsa.

purplefiend 09-09-2010 01:21 PM

A friend of mine makes zucchini pickles, they really taste good! No zucchini taste and diabetic friendly too, she used stevia and Ideal sweeteners.

I wish I could come and get some of your fresh figs! I have a recipe for fig bars--so much better than the store bought!

Me too please! I have one for zucchini bread that is always a huge hit and is so moist but since I'm addicted to chocolate, I would love to try your chocolate zucchini cake. Thank you so much.

The only thing that went well in my garden this year was tomatoes. I have canned tons of salsa (which is good because we had just finished last years stash). Guess I should just can stewed tomatoes with the rest. My vines are looking pretty sad due to the bad drought we've had this summer. I planted zucchini, yellow squash, acorn and spaghetti squash this year and the squash bugs destroyed all of them. We got a few very small acorn squash and about 5 yellow then nothing else. Had to pull the vines up because of those gross bugs were everywhere. The tomatoes and poblano peppers did great so the only thing canned was the salsa. Crazy year.

Those may be tomato worms. What to do to get rid of those is sprinkle "sevin" on them. You have to wear gloves when you do this. It will take care of worms and any other bug that attacks your tomatoes.

Panther Creek Quilting 09-11-2010 02:59 AM

Congrats! I love to can but with my mother in the hospital most of the summer, my overzealous tomato vines had rotting tomatoes on them most of the summer. UUUUGGGHHHHHHH!

Barbm 09-11-2010 03:47 AM

I posted the recipe for the chocolate zucchini cake in the recipe section! Enjoy!

My garden is about at the end too, I still have a few cukes, and tomatoes, and I want to plant some Fall spinach!

DebbyT 09-15-2010 12:55 PM

I am also in northern Mich, near Traverse City. My tomatoes did better this year than any other time. In my garden down state, I only got about 1/4 the yield. I still have a lot to harvest. I freeze mine. I either make sauce or chili.

Pats8e8 09-15-2010 03:05 PM

DH just brought in some too big cukes and a few zuchinni's. One nice tomato too. They are about done for now, but the z's are still going and I have beans also still.

Marye 09-15-2010 03:13 PM

I can see Santa (fed-ex) delivering all kinds of home canning this year instead of quilts to friends. HINT HINT I live on the main road and fed-ex deliveries to my back door for me.

Tussymussy 09-16-2010 05:44 AM

He-he......... laughing like a loon here. It just shows how us Brits and you are divided by the same language. Canning - I thought this meant that you actually stored things in cans. It intrigued me, so I looked on the internet and found that you bottle stuff.

Lol. Me? Haven't got the time or the inclination to sterilise all those jars except for jams (jelly - here jelly is a set dessert like your jello) and chutnies. The rest of it gets cooked, boxed and put in the freezer.

Probably canning (bottling) fell out of favour here because new, affordable houses here have smallish kitchens and we rarely have basements for storage.
