how pretty just like looking out my window

Gabrielle's Mimi 02-03-2011 10:04 AM

Thanks so much for sharing...I miss the birds at my birdfeeders in the Boston area. Now we are in AZ and don't get to see all my old favorites, so I have new favorites...hummingbirds and Gambel's quail. I don't use feeders anymore because we have had javelinas, bobcats, mountain lions, ringtails, etc. and I don't want to tempt them to come into my yard. (BTW, we are not out in the "wilds" we are in Scottsdale!)

JanetM 02-03-2011 11:42 AM

Thank you for sharing that. I haven't seen Cardinals since leaving Chicago. If I had your view, I would be sitting by the window all day. ;)

How wonderful to have captured such a great picture.. lovely birds they are!

ann clare 02-03-2011 12:03 PM

Beautiful

newbee3 02-03-2011 12:11 PM

what do you feed your cardinals. Last year we had at least five that came to the feeder this year only two

pkelly1947 02-03-2011 12:25 PM

I love the cardinals. Thanks for sharing. Do you have a special feed to attract so many?

CherryPie 02-03-2011 01:13 PM

That's a beautiful picture of the cardinals. You are very lucky to have that many at one time. The cardinals that come to our feeders are very selfish!! Even tho we've got three feeders, we only get to see one at a time eating. Which ever one is eating at the time chases all the others away. You're so fortunate to have that many at a time.

Iamquilter 02-03-2011 01:53 PM

You are so lucky to have so many cardinals at one time. We can only get one pair. We feed ours black sunflower seeds and safflower seeds, that way the sparrows leave the food alone because they don't like those seeds.

firecrackerpam 02-03-2011 02:35 PM

Oh My, So many. How beautiful!

Ritacarl 02-03-2011 03:11 PM

We have one. Came after a bad storm. It has stayed for about 6 weeks. It has to juggle for food with the 4 blue jays, scads of sparrows, downy and hairy woodpecks and squirrels. Love seeing the birds during the icky days.

No special feed, just black oil sunflower seeds. We feed this to all the wild birds. We have lots and lots of gold finches which we were told to feed niger seeds, but our finches wouldn't eat the niger seeds, it will set and mold while the finches eat the sunflower seeds. Nuthatches, tit mice, blue jays, purple finches, chickadees, all kinds of woodpeckers, juncos and others I'm probably forgetting really like the sunflower seeds.

My feeders have seen better days, before the squirrels and racoons found them. I would love to buy new ones just like them but can't find any- found these at a flea market several years ago.

mustangquilts 02-03-2011 05:56 PM

Oh they are so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish we had them at our place.

tuesy 02-03-2011 06:01 PM

Thank you so much for sharing this. I miss the cardinals...where I live we don't have them. Also miss the blue jays (as loud as they are sometimes), but if we go up to the mountains, sometimes you can see them... I do miss MO for some of those reasons.., but what is in the background.. (The snow), not so much!

Minnisewta 02-03-2011 06:20 PM

Man what are you feeding them? I've never seen that many in one place. You are lucky to have such a wonderful sight to behold.

MOMBASIL53 02-03-2011 06:20 PM

Beautiful......what a view...love birds

franie 02-03-2011 06:23 PM

Beautiful birds. We don't have any here in AK but it is still one of my fav. brids.

bonniebusybee 02-03-2011 06:28 PM

Quilt it!

Alice Woodhull 02-03-2011 06:35 PM

My bird feeder is right outside my sewing room window. The cardinals have been so pretty this winter. One time Ithink I counted

Alice Woodhull 02-03-2011 06:37 PM

My bird feeder is right outside my sewing room window. The cardinals have been so pretty this winter. One time Ithink I counted 12 males and about that many females at one time. It's hard to count them as they move so fast. I buy a bag of food a week, plus suet packs for the woodpeckers and whoever else wants to sneak a bite. They sure provide a lot of entertainment when it is so bad outside. Even during the day we were getting the ice storm they were busy out there. God sure provides for them.

pab58 02-03-2011 06:42 PM

OMGoodness!!!!!  I absolutely LOVE cardinals!! If I had seen those in person, I would have thought I had died and gone to Heaven!!! ;)

janiesews 02-03-2011 07:01 PM

They are so pretty!

mamaw 02-03-2011 07:11 PM

Wow, I have NEVER seen that many cardinals in one place!!!! That is trully amazing.

SewExtremeSeams 02-03-2011 07:46 PM

Thank you Bobbie, you reminded me of my much loved Grandma Rose. She loved cardinals. Usually her Christmas cards had a cardinal or two on it. How blessed you truly are to have those birds visit you.

We have bright yellow finch that become our pals in the spring and summer. We love them so much.

Bless you, Linda :-D

ENJOY? I bet they hate it...and love it that you magically provide seeds for them, you good person, you!

IBQUILTIN 02-03-2011 09:38 PM

We don't have Cardinals in California, and I love them so much, one of the few things I miss about OK

All birds are selfish...so they survive.
You might try bigger pieces of food for the jays and surround your feeder with a chicken wire cage that the jays can't get through, but the smaller birds can. Even making a chicken wire dome that fits over a pie pan or plate, could help. J

Actually, the night before last, a huge wind came roaring through and blew the seed feeder, full of seed, right off the railing. Maybe the squirrels will clean all of that up.

The suet....Stick something red on it like pieces of dried strawberry or press red bits of pet food into it....maybe a few dried cherries?
They are not seeing it...

Beautiful. am watching my feeder this morn, a male cardinal tried to come in thru my window - was quite upset when he learned it was glass! have a great day

Marilyn Philips 02-04-2011 10:28 AM

I love cardinals, but have never seen so many together at one time. I always see them only 1 pair at a time and they are so beautiful.

you make me homesick. i used to love bright sunny days after big snow storm. all the trees in the woods around my house filled with bright scarlet joy. we had so many cardinals around our homes in n.j. and pa.

laalaaquilter 02-04-2011 12:11 PM

I see you use the word 'enjoy' loosely!! Great pic.

butterflywing 02-04-2011 02:30 PM

they are beautiful, aren't they? if i had my feeder that close to the rail, the squirrels would have eaten every seed and left nothing for any bird. we have a standing pole smack in the center of the yard with a squirrel guard on the pole.

just saw a goldfinch this morning. do you keep a life list?

cheryl rearick 02-04-2011 03:20 PM

Thank you for sharing, They are so cute

PollyBeth 02-04-2011 04:27 PM

I moved to Colorado from Missouri 10 years ago and I do miss the Cardinals. They seem to have them in Kansas, guess they do not like the high altitude.
