As a solider in the US Army and it being close to Memorial Day, I challenge everyone to list their favorite patriotic song, and why....
Mine is God Bless the USA. It has always been special, because my father was a Navy officer, and served in vietnam, gulf war and desert storm,, but after going to Iraq myself,, there is no place better than the USA. It was also played at our graduation of BCT ( Basic Combat Training) and after 12 weeks of hell, dirt, grime, sweat and yes tears,, I appreciate my country more. Hope you all can join in and take the challenge!!!! |
Star Spangled Banner. It always chokes me up when I hear it sung. I don't always agree with the gov't. but I believe we are the greatest country to be in.
|
God Bless America, we sang it so much in 8th grade it wasn't even funny. (God, has it only been 9 years? It feels like forever ago!) But I liked it since it was easy to remember.
|
I also tear up with The Star Spangled Banner...
|
"The Washington Post" by J. P. Sousa.
|
God Bless America, the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood. All of which send chills up my spine.
We indeed, have the BEST country to live in and I am so thankful to our military- past and present for protecting our freedom. I don't always agree with our government with our taxes and laws, but our basic freedom can't be beat. |
This one chokes me up.....
***SOME GAVE ALL*** I knew a man called him Sandy Kane Few folks even knew his name But a hero was he Left a boy, came back a man Still many just don't understand About the reasons we are free I can't forget the look in his eyes Or the tears he cries As he said these words to me All gave some and some gave all And some stood through for the red, white and blue And some had to fall And if you ever think of me Think of all your liberties and recall Some gave all Now Sandy Kane is no longer here But his words are oh so clear As they echo through out our land For all his friends who gave us all Who stood the ground and took the fall To help their fellow man Love your country and live with pride And don't forget those who died America can't you see All gave some and some gave all And some stood through for the red, white and blue And some had to fall And if you ever think of me Think of all your liberties and recall Some gave all And if you ever think of me Think of all your liberties and recall, yes recall Some gave all Some gave all |
Oh, God Bless the USA, it can really make me tear up!
|
first of all, everything patriotic makes me cry ... sometimes a little ... sometimes buckets. i have a long list of favorites. these are in no particular order:
anything by Susa. "Proud to Be An American", by Lee Greenwood. "Star Spangled Banner" "The 1812 Overture" "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" the last two strike me as particularly remarkable. We fought the War of 1812 against the British Empire. the melody for "My Country ..." is the basis for both an American patriotic song and for the British National Anthem. these two tunes remind me that enemies can become allies; that sacrifice on the battlefield is not in vain; their souls are not wasted unless we fail to make good of their sacrifice. on this Memorial Day ... and I hope on all future Memorial Days ... i may honor the memory of American souls in particular ... but i will honor also the souls of every man, woman and child who fought and died, under the flags of many nations, in pursuit of Freedom, Decency, Compassion, and every other value we hold mutually dear. |
America the Beautiful. When I was a kid, Mister Ed would sing it and I think that is how I fell in love with it.
|
First off, I want to say thank you for serving our country. Who knows what this country would be like without young people like you willing to serve in our military. God bless you and all our servicepeople.
My favorite patriotic song is the Star Spangled Banner. |
God Bless the USA, I always tear up on all of the patriotic songs
thanks for staring this thread! |

American Soldier and The Angry American by Toby Keith. The first, because that is who the american soldier is. Ordinary men and women doing extrordinary things without thinking twice about it. Then when the job is done they go back and take up their lives without a whimper. The second, cause after 9/11 that is just how I felt. Thank you for your service from a Vietnam vet and his wife.

I have several but when they played Lee Greenwoods "God Bless the USA" as my husbands ship pulled out of San Diego harbor heading toward the gulf for Desert Storm, on my son's 2nd Birthday, December 8, 1990, I don't think there was a dry eye on the dock and my husbands says he does't think there was a dry eye on the ship either. Every time I hear that song, I see his carrier leaving and my 4 children crying their eyes out!!!

the one that always gets me "Green Beret" from back in the late sixties.and also God Bless the USA,Arlington by Trace Atkins

I truly love so many--God Bless America, Star Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful. It's surprising to me that not all Americans know he/she is supposed to stand with hand over heart at the playing of the national anthem. I teach my class that every year--and we practice! |
America the Beautiful is my all-time favorite. I wish it was our national anthem. The words are so beautiful. I really don't like some of the words in the other one. Kinda violent. I know that's the way it was but I just love America the Beautiful :)
I'm a huge Yankees fan and every 7th inning stretch they play God Bless America (Kate Smith) Really nice. |
God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood gets me everytime! Thank you mrsdralshhadeh!
|
Thank God for allowing us to live in such a beautiful country. All the mentioned songs are favorites. Americans we owe our Soldiers more each day. My dad was USAF(ret) a vereran of WWII.
|
God Bless the USA. It was playing at a local restaurant when we had lunch today, and I just about cried in the middle of the meal.
|
|
another favorite Battle Hymn of the Republic |
I tear up everytime I hear The Star Spangled Banner. I know we are all so lucky to live here and thank you to the troops that work so hard to keep us free.

|
Hmmm....it's so hard to pick just one.
God Bless the USA, I also agree with the other poster about "Angry American" by Toby Kieth, I really identified with that song after 9/11 (and still do) My husband served in the Army for 9 years. He was supposed to be in the Pentagon the day of the attack. (turns out he wasn't, but I didn't know that at the time) OK tearing up just thinking about it, its a long story.... |

I am a naturalized citizen (2000) - so for me pledging allegiance to the flag was a true choice. I do think that America is Beautiful in more ways than just the landscape. |
Not quite what you might expect, but you asked for favorite patriotic songs, not just the classical ones. So mine is...
In America, by the Charlie Daniels Band Lyrics here: http://www.charliedaniels.com/lyrics/inamerica.html |

"Proud to Be An American", by Lee Greenwood.

As a non -American, can I say my favourite American song? The back story: My father served in WWII, Korean, Malaya and Vietnam. 3 of theose wars were served with Americans. He made friends with another soldier, who was from New York State, and they wrote to each other from 1945 to 2006, when the other man died. Each year, at Christmas, they would call each other. My father has a beautiful voice, and he would sing God Bless America (he called it the American Hymn) to his friend, and we would all sing God Save the Queen or Waltzing Matilda to him - at 4 am on Xmas morning, then we would open the presents he sent. I still have a Barbie House he sent, which I loved. The presents would arrive in November, or early december, and we would try everything to figure out what they were.
Dad looked so lost the year he lost his friend, so my brother had the choir (they are both in a choir together) sing it at the Christmas concert, the Choirmaster is from Arkanas, and he was very moved. The choir have sung it every year at their Christmas Concert since. The average age of the choir members is 80, the youngest is 63, the oldest, who looks like Santa, is 98. |
