changing threads on "regular" sewing machine

when it goes well, it probably takes less than a minute to change the threads on one of my "regular" machines - but i just do not like th change the threads - even when i know i won' t use black thread to fix that open seam on a white blouse.

do you have any things that are really "easy" to do - but for whatever reason, you do not like to do them?

Tartan 01-27-2019 06:05 AM

:)I keep one machine with light thread and one machine with dark thread so I am always ready for a quick repair.

I have a bad habit of not changing needles and rotary blades. It's silly to be so cheap when I'm not at all cheap in most other ways!

KalamaQuilts 01-27-2019 06:20 AM

I think a common 'thread' here is changing rotary blades

I am with you on this!

QuiltnNan 01-27-2019 07:15 AM

dusting was my job as a child. it's quite easy but i don't like to do it, so i don't do it often

Iceblossom 01-27-2019 07:27 AM

Hey, Bear, if your needle doesn't need to be changed, you can cut the old thread by the spool and tie a simple tight square knot of the new thread and just pull the whole thing through! So says the vision challenged gal :)

I have lots of things that I put off doing. Dishes is probably the biggest and most noticeable one. But this morning I got up, emptied the sink and got the dishwasher going. I don't know why I let them stack up in the sink, I don't know why I don't just run the dishwasher half full, but I know I pretty much always have dirty dishes to contend with.

But with what Kalama said, I'm going to make it my goal this week to change all three of my rotary cutter blades. They all need it. They all have those "ticks" where a single thread doesn't get cut.

gramajo 01-27-2019 12:15 PM

You're lucky you have a dishwasher. I ALWAYS have dirty dishes in my sink.

nativetexan 01-27-2019 01:14 PM

I hate filling my bobbin so i make it an excuse to take a break first!

I agree not because of expense but I just don't think about it until I get super frustrated and buy a new one and think why didn't I chanel it forever ago

I am happy to have dirty dishes in my sink. It means we had a good meal. I load them and DH puts them away.

Irishrose2 01-27-2019 10:04 PM

I dislike filling bobbins which is, of course, a very easy job, but usually it means I have to rethread the machine and that takes time, especially if if it's a time when I have trouble threading the needle. Housework: I dislike folding clothes.

I feel the same way. Hate to dust.

tranum 01-28-2019 03:48 AM

I hate to vacuum. Glad our house is small so there’s not a lot of it.

quilterpurpledog 01-28-2019 03:49 AM

I also do not like to dust; however, I do it every Monday morning because I schedule it-otherwise it would join the 'things to do tomorrow' list. I cannot tolerate dishes in the sink or on the counter top. After all, it is only eight inches to inside the dishwasher. My favorite home management task is laundry. I like all of the aspects and even like to mend when necessary. I do like to iron.

NZquilter 01-28-2019 04:02 AM

I'm guilty of never folding laundry, it's the chore I always put off until it piles up. I tried last week to fold everything, but received so much "help" from my two year old it was barely worth it!

SusieQOH 01-28-2019 04:06 AM

I hate cleaning the kitchen. My husband is a wonderful cook but uses everything in the kitchen to prepare a meal. Because he cooks I feel better cleaning up, that is, until it's time. That's when I get out my audiobook and clean forever! (it seems) :)

sandy l 01-28-2019 04:16 AM

Is there any way I can get you to come over to my house?:), 'cause it could sure use some of you help:)

coopah 01-28-2019 05:29 AM

I agree with the rotary blade changing. Iceblossom mentioned the "tick" on the rotary blade where one thread doesn't get cut. How does that happen? Ideas? It happens here, too, and since the blade is a circle, how does just one little spot on it not cut when the rest of the blade still works fine? It drives me nuts...I keep thinking the "tick" will go away, but no, it doesn't.

Nicking the edge of the ruler. Cutting over a pin.

Snooze2978 01-28-2019 06:54 AM

Used to have 2 sergers so when I needed to do a simple 3-thread serge I'd go to that machine as its so difficult to thread or at least it was for me. Reason why I got the 2nd serger, a Babylock air threader. Got rid of the 1st serger last year as I just wasn't using it much so why keep it? Anyway, I just tie whatever color thread I need to change to, pull it thru except for the needle and it makes it so much easier for me now. I do the same on my quilting machine, just tie the new thread to the end and pull it thru till it reaches the needle.

LOL. One 'chore' we started pretty early with our 3 kids, was everyone responsible for folding their own laundry. I would sort it out of the dryer, dropping each piece into a separate basket for each child. Then they got to fold their own! They thought it was fun. And so what if they didn't fold perfectly... So we got to fold together and the job went much faster. As they became teens, they graduated to washing their own clothes too.

For me, the one tedious part of laundry is putting everything away where it goes, once it's folded.

bearisgray 01-28-2019 07:13 AM

i have even had new, out of the package, Olfa rotary blades skip that one thread.

Barb2018 01-28-2019 07:44 AM

I could spend all day sewing quilt blocks but I absolutely hate repairing clothes or hemming pants. I'll put it off until I have no other choice. My husband and daughter are both 5' 3" and usually need a few inches off their pant legs.

This is me all over.

Friday1961 01-28-2019 10:24 AM

One of my "put off" chores is unloading the dishwasher. Have no idea why; it's easy, the dishes are clean. And yet I hate doing it. I also hate vacuuming, but perhaps that's more reasonable, lol. (I don't mind sweeping, so I think it's the noise of the vacuum I dislike).

mojo11 01-29-2019 07:24 AM

I'm another ---- I strongly dislike dusting!

todiesmom 01-29-2019 08:30 AM

when I finish a project I usually have another in mind to start so I change the thread and bobbin to whatever my next project needs and adjust the tension if necessary with a sample swatch...that way I can start right in with my new project without frustration..i hate when I sit down to sew a new project and have to spend 30 minutes to an hour to get the machine threaded and bobbin filled and adjust tension...lol

madamekelly 01-29-2019 11:54 AM

I keep gray thread in my serger, which sounds like a good idea on a serger, but mine has the “Air threader” and needle threader, but my old one was a pain that involved tweezers, forceps, and lots of bad words, and I think I got stuck in the “I don’t wanna” mind set. Silly huh?
