I cooked the chicken carcasses and was showing the DGKs how I pick the chicken off the bones. I explained that you boil the carcass, strain the bones, and don't throw the juice away. The 8 and 7yo's walked away remarking "WOW, I didn't know you could do that!" All they've ever known is soup in the red can

Be sure to add vinegar to the first cooking. It'll take a lot of the calcium out of the bones. You can tell the difference in the strength of the bones, from water only to vinegar enhanced broth.
The vinegar doesn't smell and increases the taste!!!

My grandkids LOVE chicken soup the way I make it from scratch. I add homemade noodles to the boiling broth and they just gobble it up!

I don't have the room in my kitchen to make homemade noodles, but I have used the broken lasagna noodles instead.

I love making soup. You can get a nice meal out of what would otherwise have been trash.

Goes right along with scrap quilting, doesn't it? Make something from nothing...

so true!

You think that is funny? I have visiting adults standing and watching me when I cook chicken soup from scratch. Many have never eaten real cranberry sauce or fresh yams either. It all comes from a can for them.

Anyone know how much vinegar vinegar to add

ptquilts 08-20-2011 08:35 AM

Wait til they find out where milk comes from !! And eggs!!

Reminds me of the gal whose DH was a gourmet cook - one day he told her he was making tongue for dinner. She said, yuck, I don't want to eat anything that has been in a cow's mouth.
Well what shall I make for you? he asked.

Just fix me an egg, she replied.
