That's very interesting. I've read a lot about the Civil War and never knew about the balloons.

Yes, History Detective is a terrific show on PBS that has had numerous shows with regards to unusual inventions used during the Civil War. Shows have included the use of balloons for getting a view of the enemy troops and even a Confederate submarine where all hands were lost.

Familiar with balloons in CW tried to get one at our reenactment a few years back. Might have to check it out again!
