Cleaning an iron soleplate?
Just got an Olisso iron and first thing I did was get fusible glue on it! Help - how do I clean it?

Is that different from a regular iron?
two home fixes I've heard, sprinkles salt on foil and iron, or iron waxed paper (grease proof in the UK) Neither ever cleaned my iron. On the notions wall at sewing stores is Dritz iron cleaner. Really it is a soft wax, and smells good when you iron it :) I take a leftover bit of cotton batting about the size of a kleenex, fold it into a 4 part accordion fold run a line (like toothpaste) of the Dritz iron clean on it and then iron back and forth with a hot iron. Works like a dream. |
I use fabric dryer sheets when I get Wonder Under on soleplate--just press down hard while iron is hot and dry-comes off every time ! It evens takes off the fusible stuff if it gets on right side of fabric !

Read the instructions manual to see what the sole plate is made of. If it has a Teflon like coating you do not want to scratch it. Some people use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the cold iron.

I just helped a friend with this problem. The solution surprised both of us. Make sure the iron is HOT. We used a warm+white batting scrap and rubbed the goop off. Then ran the iron over waxed paper. Worked like a dream.

I would use the iron cleaner you get in the store - iron off; dritz; something. They work like a charm. Definitely don't want to scratch the soleplate - regardless of material.

Thanks, everyone. I will start with suggestions from what I have at home and proceed to the store if that does not work.

The Dritz cleaner works better than anything else I have tried.

I mistakenly plugged in my new iron before taking off the plastic coating on the sole plate. What a mess. I found a solution on the internet that said put the iron in the freezer and the plastic would get brittle and peal off. I didn't have room in the freezer so I sat the sole plate down on ice. It took some work but the plastic did chip off. What little residue was left I used a damp magic eraser (like Mr. Clean one) on a cold iron. You wold never know there was any residue on the iron now. When my iron gets a little gunky from starch, general use etc. I just use a magic eraser and my iron is like new. I have a shiny sole plate on my iron. I don't know how it would work with a coated sole plate. Good luck. It can be cleaned.

I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to clean my iron. Spray water on the hot iron and then iron the eraser. I'll bet it will come right off.
