coconut oil

Recently, several people talked about coconut oil being helpful for people with Alzheimer's. One of my friends says it has helped her husband, but it's rather expensive. Does anyone remember if there is a source that sells it for less?

Newby0709 03-04-2012 03:39 PM

I bought LouAna at Wal-Mart. I didn't look for any other source. You can search online for places and prices.

ptquilts 03-04-2012 04:10 PM

How is it supposed to help?

TanyaL 03-04-2012 04:11 PM

My husband is willing to try the oil, but how do you get 4 tablespoons a day into a diet? I haven't found an answer to that yet.

delma_paulk 03-04-2012 04:19 PM

Put it in oatmeal at breakfast, make a salad dressing with it. I read that you need the pure coconut oil, not one that has been purified, pasterized. Try a google search on it.

Raw coconut oil. Blend into a smoothie. It's really tasty. Also nice to rub into your skin. Here's a smoothie I make for my DH and myself:

2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1 banana
handful or two of frozen strawberries
1 - 2 tablespoons coconut oil
tablespoon raw cacao powder (raw cacao powder, not the kind you use for baking) this is optional
little pinch of sea salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon raw honey

blend and enjoy :-)
another option is to blend in a big handful of baby spinach, you won't taste it in the smoothie but you get a good nutritional boost, adding frozen blueberries turns it purple so you don't see the green so much.

Thanks for that, my parents will be interested in this

What department did you find it in? Will look tomorrow for it. Thank you.

I have not seen where there is any scientific evidence that this works. Not sure I would trust medical news from CBN. It seems so far it is subjective evidence only. ("I gave it to my husband and he seems better". ) Quite a bit different from a double-blind study.

But I suppose it couldn't hurt. I hate to see people getting false hopes though.

We don't eat oatmeal every day. 1 Tablespoon of salad dressing is about all I put on a helping of salad. The info I read was if you don't have the 4 Tablesp per day you don't have an effective amt. How can you swallow that much oil? I tried using it instead of butter on toast. It didn't work very well.

Google didn't turn up ways to use it, only advise to take it.

jaxgranny 03-04-2012 06:28 PM

It's with the cooking oils at WalMart.

Wine Woman 03-04-2012 06:39 PM

Dr. Oz has had a few segments on using it. I would check out his information and Dr's that recommend using it every day.

When my Grandma was alive we would have tried it. Sometimes false hope is better than no hope at all.

stitchinwitch 03-05-2012 05:55 AM

It actually looks like Crisco, smells HEAVENLY - and I also buy mine at WalMart - $10 or under. When your oatmeal is done cooking, I add coconut oil and a little honey. It is becoming quite the thing - 'will have to google for other recipes.

stitchinwitch 03-05-2012 05:57 AM

I found it in the vitamin section..

Our Walmart doesn't sell too much of it. I got the last container. It took 3 clerks to find it. It was on the back of the shelf with a case of Crisco oil in front of it. LOL. I have used it fry potatoes, okra and eggs in. Pretty expensive just for regular cooking, but am really looking for ways to get it into the diet in sufficient amts.

Damsel in DisDress 03-05-2012 06:55 AM

You can buy coconut oil in health food stores ,organic, or pill form. I use (1/4 tsp.)of the oil in my scrambled eggs. Since he needs more I think you would be better off using pill form I like to use Puritans's Pride.

grma33 03-05-2012 06:57 AM

Dr oz just talked about cocnut palm sugar as a great replacement can use it in baking equal to reg sugar
I`ll be its expensive.

4 Tablespoons is the dosage that Dr. Mary Newport found to be effective for her husband. Where did you get the dosage that you are taking?

CAS49OR 03-05-2012 07:33 AM

I drink whey protien shakes, and added coconut milk instead of water to the chocolate flavor and it turned out really thick like a fast food shake. I don't know if coconut milk has any benefits like coconut oil.

I cook with the oil, it's great for Thai food, like curry. I use it as a wonderful face soother also. I mix in a little virgin olive oil to make it more spreadable. I bought mine online, but can't remember where, it's been a while. It is in the news more often now. It is also supposed to help break down "brown fat", the kind that collects around your organs and causes disease.

Caswews 03-05-2012 07:41 AM

interesting for sure ..

mizsandy7 03-05-2012 08:26 AM

I use the Wal Mart brand, and it has worked. I let it melt in his soup, use it in cereal, fry with it, and will try the smoothie. My husband has Parkinson w/dementia, mask like face. After the first day he woke up, smiled ( unusual) raised his eyebrows, Really unusual , and talked in a normal voice. I'm trying to get the right dosage. But for him, a remarkable improvement! He even said he wanted to start going places with me, and he felt better.

Coconut Oil

I use coconut oil in my homemade breakfast bars, I put it on toast (sometimes w/peanut butter), salads, cooked rice cereal, cooking and just plain eating off the spoon. I like the flavor and smell of it. I good source is Tropical Traditions or the local health foods store. It may seem a little pricey, but the benefits. . . . . , its all preventive. My first husband recently died of Alzheimer's and my two children are in line to get it as it is hereditary.

Please Goggle Dr. Newport Coconut Oil and watch the testimonies. There are/were 5 or 6 videosand are informative. It does take time to watch them to the end, but if one is concerned about dementia, etc., it is time well invested. Her husband has early stage, as I recall, she is a pediatric doctor who attempted to get her husband into two drug tests. The interviews to get into the studies were two days in a row and you will see the improvement in her husband after 2T of coconut oil. Check out the clock test to see the improvement. She also speaks of his continued improvement.

Someone mentioned Dr. Oz. One of his guests (4x) Dr. Mercola, has been on recently and I suggest you look at his website. He really tells us the truth. However, keep in mind that he is also sells. Recently, he has started speaking about the benefits of Vit. K2purported to be as necessary at Vit. D3. Site: www.Mercola.com. Check out his newsletter.

If anyone is interested in my recipe for the breakfast bars, I will post it. Hope I haven't been too words. Sorry.

Suz 03-05-2012 11:42 AM

Forgot this important item. Dementia and Alzheimer's patients all have high levels of aluminum in their systems. Where did this aluminum come from? Here is a short list: aluminum beer and soda cans, baking soda, baking powder, pots and pans, deoderant, underwire bras, cookie sheets, collanders, egg poachers, cooking utensils.

Use bottled beer and soda, aluminum-free baking soda/powder from the health foods store, stainless pans, (I recently purchased new stainless inserts for my egg poacher), Mennens has a women's deoderant (sorry men) called Crystal Clean, use parchment paper on cookie sheets and to line cake pans, stainless utensils.

We are all in charge of the health of our families and ourselves. We must do what we can to live in health. Okay, now I'm done.

I agree with this post. CBN is not noted for being impartial. I guess it wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't use it as my only therapy or discontinue any medical therapy based on this item. I sure hope he is exercising as the calories in coconut oil are lots!

dreamboat 03-05-2012 12:49 PM

I have been cooking with coconut oil for about 3 yrs now. I fry all fried food with it. I buy the Louann brand at wal mart. My daughter use to buy it in 50 lb can and so she bought me some. I use about 2 lb a month. It may be expensive, but it is worth it. the louAnn from walmart is $5.48 for 2 lb jar.

Dr Oz had it on his show last week including how you could use it on your head and feet before taking a shower and get the benefits of it. Check out his site for more on it. He loves it on his oatmeal.

Rose Bagwell 03-05-2012 06:13 PM

Local H.E.B. here in Texas sells the Lou Ana brand that Dr. Oz reccomends, it is only $5.59 31 and 1/2 oz. It has to be all natural . Here is their website: www.louana.com, I only hope that I can find it when I get back to CA. It is made in Brea, CA. You can use for lots of things,

honeybea 03-05-2012 06:42 PM

I found the louana at Wallmart in the aisle where they sell all the vegetable oils. Hope this helps

JeanieG 03-05-2012 07:42 PM

Yes, I saw this article too. I noticed it at Trader Joe's on the shelf with their other oils.

Wonderful news, Ditter. I have "lost" a few friends because of this onset. Hopefully this news can be helpful to them and their families.

coachmatthewsvhs 03-06-2012 04:14 AM

I also use it for body lotion! It is a solid in pure form and needs to be heated to melt... so I would add it to hot foods! Alzheimers runs in my family.... Hoping for a cure!

SamSew 03-06-2012 04:34 AM

Swanson Vitamins, has the oil and it also has capsules that you can take. I am doing the capsules, can not get 4 T down.
www.swansonvitamins.com Great source for vitamins, organic shampoos etc. And I think great prices.

For those of you that this horrible disease "runs in the family" there are tests that can be done now, a test of the spinal fluid and a pet scan, that can detect whether or not a person has the potential for developing it. Your doctor can start treating long before the first symptoms present and by doing that can postpone the symptoms --- sometimes causing to never happen. I saw that on Dr. Oz about a year ago.
