I've read all the good ideas for cleaning shower stalls. I have a question: what is a good way to clean cooked on grease from a black stovetop? Sorry to admit that I've let it get ahead of me and I can't get the cooked on grease off. Any suggestions?

Chasing Hawk 10-03-2010 10:47 AM

Try Dawn Power Dissolver.

I use it to clean my oven and the barbecue grill racks. I take the racks and put them in a big trash bag and squirt this on it and leave it for a few hours then use a wire brush.

nativetexan 10-03-2010 10:48 AM

is this a glass stove top. smooth one? or does it have burners??

Quiltforme 10-03-2010 10:49 AM

Is it ceramic/glass I still use the Mr. Clean erasers. They are chemical free and work amanzing. I use them on my ceramic/glass cooktop. I use a razor blade first to get off the burnt on foods then the eraser. but if it is not a ceramic/glass cooktop the razor blade might not be a good idea. but the eraser is not that expensive to try.

ktbb 10-03-2010 11:10 AM

if you have a floor steamer, use that on the stovetop - you may have to throw away the cloth, but it should work without chemicals.

Suzan Larrimore 10-03-2010 11:51 AM

I've used all of those and the best so far is No Fume Easy Off for the oven. spray it on let it soak for 2 hrs.(You can sew while you wait.) Wipe off with a wet cloth. I know it says oven but it works on top too.

This is similar to what I do to clean stove top. I use Soft Scrub, after razor blade.

There is a product called DeSolvit that works wonderful on grease. Wal Mart, Hardware stores, and some grocery stores carry it. It's orange based. If it's been baked on spray it on and let it set 30 min - 1 hr. Depending on how thick the grease is, you may have to spray on more after a while. Just take your finger or old toothbrush and spread it over the greasy areas, you don't need tons of it to work.

To clean grease on my stove, hard water stains on glass or porcelain, I use 0000 Steel Wool also. Yes, steel wool, but make sure it is 0000. You can use it on your stove, mirrors, porcelain, glass, cars, and just about anything you can think of that's not soft and it won't scratch it. I've been using it for years and it works wonderful.

Once you get it clean, you'll be amazed at how easy it is to keep your stove top clean and shiny. Vinegar works great afterwards for shine.

After years of trying every product I could find, I very reluctantly (an carefully!) resorted to the razor blade! OMG! I could not believe how easily and completely it cleaned off the gunk! Now I just keep the stove top wiped off as well as i can, and then about every 2 weeks or so, out comes the good ol' razor blade.

KathyAire 10-03-2010 01:27 PM

I've used a razor blade to get the stuff loose. Then I use baking soda and a soft scrubby.

Cheryl: I haven't been able to find DeSolvit for several years. I love that stuff.
What is 0000 steel wool? I know about brillo pads, but I don't know about 0000 steel wool.

Miss Patsy Jane 10-03-2010 01:46 PM

It is a gas stovetop with burners. Why I chose black is beyond me, but even though it is several years old, it is too good to replace.

By the way, I'm a native Texan too! I was born at home in a little town called Odell. Know where that is? I don't even know if it is on the map now!

I had good luck with the oven cleaner, followed by the magic eraser. Now I will add in the razor blades. Thanks for the tips.

Miss Patsy Jane 10-03-2010 01:52 PM

Thanks, everyone! I used to work at a store that sold 0000 steel wool, but I just assumed it was to be used by our DHs in their workshops! I'm going to print out all of these suggestions right now!

I just bought a new stove that has a black top. I bought the the kit at lowe's where I bought the stove. It is called Cerama-Brite. It comes with a sponge you use to apply with. It is made of soft material. I also comes with a single edge razor blade that fits into a handle that you use to get stubborn stuff off with. It is great. If you could see the stove after my huband has cooked and how it looks after I clean it you would be sold. It is just fantastic. You put this on let it dry and then rub it off with a soft cloth. Looks brand new after every cleaning. I have had the stove since Aug of 08.

Miss Patsy Jane 10-04-2010 09:44 AM

Thanks for the info. My husband likes to go to Lowe's so I'll go with him next time! My stovetop is much older than yours and is not a ceramic top, but I don't know why that wouldn't work on my stovetop.

Mine is glass not ceramic. The product is made for glass and ceramic. They told me not to use anything else or I would have scratches galore.

Miss Patsy Jane 10-04-2010 01:33 PM

OK. Thanks. Mine is enamel or something metal. So I'd probably better not use it.

My Maytag smooth top came with a razor blade scrapper. How on earth do you clean a smooth top without one? I don't baby my cooktop at all, what ever I have handy to spray on it, cleans it up after a few swipes with the scrapper. I use Scrubbing Bubbles, Windex, even carpet cleaner if that's what I grab first. I will never buy another Maytag though, the company told me I could get a new top if any cooking mark did not scrap or clean off. I had a Maytag repairman come out and he said Maytag knew the tops would turn black after being heated to high heat and now the company said it's cosmetic and will not affect the cooking so the warranty will not cover it. I guess I could sue for a new one but I prefer to tell how shabby they treat customers.

Miss Patsy Jane 10-04-2010 05:58 PM

And the darn Maytags last forever! I have a Maytag washing machine that is over 15 years old and have never had a problem with it! It's the pits they won't honor their warranty on your cooktop.

A friend of mine desided to help his wife (at 3am) and used sand paper needless to say he had to buy a new top

Kathy,

Try looking up distributors in your state or area on the internet and maybe you'll be able to find the DeSolvit. It's so good and I'm glad we have it here in Minnesota. Go to your local Hardware store and they should carry it. It's just plain steel wool (no soap), they have all sorts of different grades of it. Make sure you get the one that has 0000 on it. The others will be abrasive for all the things I mentioned that the 0000 could be used for. It really is safe for your stove, mirrors, aluminum, etc. Good luck  :-)

Kathy,

What ever you do, DON'T use brillo pads of any kind, they are way too abrasive and WILL definitely leave scratches. When I cleaned my daughters', she had baked on stuff, I did carefully use a razor blade to get the worst of it.

An added hint for shine, after cleaning, is using wintergreen alcohol. I mix 1 part wintergreen to 1 part water in a spray bottle and it smells nice when you use it. Vinegar works great too, but doesn't smell as nice. I use it for shine in the bathroom and mirrors too, after cleaning them.

Barkeeper's Friend makes a glass cooktop cleaner that I've found really works well. I also use Magic Erasers in between. My cleaning lady shines it all up with Windex. Be careful not to use those green scrubbers that you use for pots and pans. They tend to scratch.

newbee3 12-10-2022 10:27 AM

my son got my cooked on grease off using a non scratch pad and the bartenders friend and a lot of scrubbing

I have a black cook top too. My pressure canner was rough on it. I made grape jam and some of the sugar cooked on. I used the fume free oven cleaner and it helped. I was worried it would take the paint off. A couple of weeks ago I accidentally turned on the wrong burner and it cooked on the vegetable oil in my aluminum Whirly Pop popcorn maker. You don't wash them, you season the pot with oil and wipe it out after you use it. I had not wiped it out yet and so it had oil and popcorn debris in it. It turned into a nasty black hard layer in the bottom of the pot and boy did it smell horrible--like burning plastic. I poured a couple cups of ammonia in the bottom and let it set for two days. You can't believe how easy it was to finish cleaning up. I learned that trick awhile back and had never tried it out. The idea is to take your grill top and put it in a garbage bag with ammonia overnight. Apparently it works.

I helped a friend clean up a stove in a house he bought to rent out. My oh My - was that kitchen greasy I used Dawn Platinum 4x on the stove. Wipe it on and let it sit for a few minutes. It took a second application but it works well and kind to hands.
