This crab could feed a family easily....lol

Here is the specs on this bad boy:

Birgus latro is the largest land-living arthropod in the world;[4][5] reports about the size of Birgus latro vary, but most sources give a body length of up to 40 cm (16 in),[6] a weight of up to 4.1 kg (9.0 lb), and a leg span of more than 0.91 m (3.0 ft),[7] with males generally being larger than females.[8] The carapace may reach a length of 78 mm (3.1 in), and a width of up to 200 mm (7.9 in) (taken from Wiki)

GiGi 04-17-2012 06:33 AM

They are commonly known as a coconut crab and they are protected in some countries; e. g., Japan. Nasty looking aren't they? GiGi

Omg! that would be something to just about jump out of your shoes about. Are they edible? Wow if they are it looks like it would make a great dinner. LOL

grandme26 04-17-2012 10:28 AM

Just think of all the work it would take to crack open the legs to get to the meat.

Yeah, but once you got them open. . . . . . boy, oh, boy. More eating and less picking.

Please, I need more story to go with this picture. Where in the world was this pic taken. Did you just walk out your door to get the garbage can and there it was. How common are they. It is one beautiful creature. Thanks for sharing this great pic. I would never think of taking this creatures life. Too beautiful.
peace

I found this picture on the Fox news website. It is the second picture. I think some of these pictures were actual pretty cool. I agree, I couldn't eat him, I might build him his own beach to lounge on.
