The Crown....

Watched the series on netflex....enjoyed it, some interesting insights in the "family dynamics"...I do wonder what the queen carries in her purse...

SusieQOH 01-09-2018 04:36 PM

We watched it and really enjoyed it a lot. Very interesting dynamics indeed. Your purse comment cracked me up!
One thing that surprised me was how she gave birth. I just assumed she had sections but I guess not.
I got sold on the Queen when she invited the Beatles to the palace. I've never forgotten that!!From then on she's been A okay in my book lol

I think she keeps lipstick and makeup in there, certainly not cash! I enjoyed it all, too.

It's often been reported that she has her glasses in her purse, along with a hook to put on the edge of table, so her purse never touches the floor.

I love the real queen. She's gotten a bad rap, but she is one class act. If you read about her life you will find she is an extraordinary woman. She still, at well past 90 years old, works 40 hours a week and has worked 50 hours a week most of her life. Who of us could keep that up for 60+ years? During the war, as a young woman, she was an accomplished mechanic and rebuilt the engine on an ambulance! She has 1200 employees, but she feeds her own dogs. Quite an admirable lady and one of my heroines.

I read that she has filed the appropriate paperwork with parliament that she will retire/abdicate at age 95 and has left instructions on power transfer to Charles. It's all in place should she die or reach 95. Prince Phillip resigned his duties last year, I believe. She is an amazing, dignified, and respected individual. I think it is truly a testament of her dedication to her role and the monarchy that there has really never been a scandal about her or Phillip. Her children...yes....but not her. There will never be another like her, that's for sure.

She is amazing, and if you haven't seen "The Queen," a film made a few years ago, you will probably enjoy it. She shows her mechanical ability!

paoberle 01-11-2018 05:07 AM

There was a story just recently about the queen and her purse. One reason she carries a purse is so that her hands are not free and she will not be expected, or tempted, to shake hands. The story was commenting about how Megan Markle carried the wrong type of purse that left her hands free. If you'll notice, Kate almost always carries a type of clutch which does not leave her hands free.

QuiltE 01-11-2018 06:01 AM

Actually, that doesn't make full sense ... she usually has her purse over her arm, so that she has both hands free to use, as she wishes.

Another purse story ... when she switches it from left to right arm (or is it right to left?), her assistants know she needs help in freeing herself from whomever she is talking to at the time!!

I never heard purse stories but I also think a lot of her. She's not just sitting on a throne all day!

The Crown certainly is an interesting series. There has been a lot of drama in the royal family to draw upon for story lines. I believe that season 3 will have new (older) actresses to play the role of the aging queen and her sister Margaret.

glad to hear there will be a season 3!
About turning power over at age 95-wonder if Charles will accept or turn over to his son. Charles doesn't seem like he wants the role...
amazing to me, to live such a controlled life in such opulence and yet be working 40-50 hrs a week. But I guess growing up in that environment it just is "life" as they know it....but I guess anyone who is wealthy and has a empire to look after is just as devoted, be it monarch or politician or business mogul..

SusieQOH 01-11-2018 07:06 AM

Glad to know there will be a new season. I thought the ending didn't seem like an ending.

NZquilter 01-11-2018 07:26 AM

I'm interested in watching it, but I couldn't find it on Netflix. Have they pulled it down?

Chasing Hawk 01-11-2018 09:57 AM

Interesting, I may have to watch this in the sewing room today.

Charles isn't a young man so I don't think he'll be King very long before it passes to William. Who would have thought the Queen would live to this age? Goodness...

SusieQOH 01-11-2018 08:16 PM

Her mother lived to be 105, or 104. I get mixed up with Rose Kennedy. They were both over 100.

I wish she would skip Charles and just moved it on to William. There's always so much scuttlebutt!

I requested season 1 from my library but it will be a while until
I receive it. The library has it on order and there are 162 requests ahead of me. Guess I'll just have to quilt.

tranum 01-13-2018 09:48 AM

162 ! Crazy ! I don’t keep up on the “rules” but Queen Elizabeth’s uncle Edward gave up the throne to marry a divorced woman. Charles is married to the same, so can he be King or have I got something wrong ? Queen Elizabeth is a class act, quite a lady.

SuzzyQ 01-13-2018 10:42 AM

Canadian monarchist here - my mother idolized Queen Elizabeth!
1. The Queen has said she'll never retire so that remark about age 95 and abdicating in favour of Charles...
2. Charles will be king. He actually seems to be more settled since his marriage to Camilla.
3. In the 30's yes King Edward had to give up his throne to marry an American divorcee. However the "rules" have changed. Charles will be king even with his divorce and remarriage to a divorcee. The Queen has really advanced the position and customs that the family follows.

SusieQOH 01-13-2018 11:26 AM

In thinking about the Royals it seems to me that it was unfortunate that Charles was not allowed to marry Camilla when they were young. For one thing, lovely Diana would probably still be alive. For all the luxuries they sure have some weird rules.
And yes, the rules have relaxed a lot in the past few decades. I read that when Princess Margaret got divorced it paved the way for more relaxed attitudes about it. Out of the Queen's four children only one has not been divorced.
