I cannot stand carpeting!!! It's dirty, linty, dusty, and there is nothing worse than stairs with carpet!! I have oak hardwood in the kitchen and family room but it is too soft and everything seems to make a mark on it. Plus it has that little beveled edge between the slats which just grosses me out to have that in the kitchen!! Worse thing ever to have little crevases in a kitchen floor.

My oldest daughter came and got the full sized bed and the side tables from one of my bedrooms so all that is in there now is my long arm machine. So... I decided that I'm going to start doing carbonized bamboo flooring, which is what I have wanted. Going to start in that room, then I can move my sewing room furniture in there, do the floor in the sewing room room, move my home office furniture out, do that room, etc. etc.

They are individual rooms so it won't matter if there are slight differences in the flooring if I get the same manufacturer and color. When I get to doing the hallway and stairs that run together I can get all of it at once.

I have wanted this for so long and if I do a room at a time it won't take a big bite out of my budget. I did LOTS of Pergo by myself in my last house so I have experience and it's not that hard to do.

You will enjoy haveing a "hard" floor in your sewing room. Chair rolls so much easier and easy to sweep.
It's nice that you can do this yourself!! Show some pics when you are done!!!

That is a major motivator too, to have hard floors in the sewing room and office. The carpet is pretty bad in the office because of the rolling chair. I had one of those clear mats but it just doesn't do too well on regular carpet.

It annoys me to no end when my chair won't move.

When my sewing room (family room) still had carpeting I actually broke one of the wheels on my chair. It was really hard to roll on the carpeting and I am a big girl.
Now, I really need to turn the chair over and clean all the threads and dog hair out of the wheels, but they still move for me!

pittsburgpam 07-29-2010 09:49 AM

I'm not a lightweight and sometimes I have to stand up and knock the chair back to get it to move.

I am so looking forward to this. :) Maybe I can pick some up this weekend if I get to it.

We took all the carpet out of the house a few years ago and I don't miss it. Still working on the finish of the bedrooms upstairs but I love my hard wood floors. Thanks goodness there were good floors under that carpet. Just needed some TLC.

LUCKY YOU! I have carpets because they are cheaper, but I hate them with all the pets here! Someday I want nice HW floors!

DebraK 07-29-2010 11:47 AM

I'm envious! I would do the whole house over in bamboo if I could afford it.

Carpet is also terrible for allergies and asthma. My house will have fully hard flooring some day. My current carpet is 11 years old. We aren't going to replace it when it comes out in 3 or 4 years. We don't wear shoes in the house, so that's helped keep it in pretty good shape for a light grey carpet.

I'm still undecided as to if I'm going to go laminate, hard wood or simply stained concrete. CA isn't cold so I've got lots of options:>

I took all the carpet out of my house and installed vinyl faux wood. Easy to put down. Took me 3 years doing one room at a time. Finished last year with the master bedroom. Hope I don't have to do that again any time soon....My hips and knees would'nt take it LOL

Just seems to me that the expense of replacing and cleaning carpets over time is more expensive than a hard flooring. Plus you can just change area rugs to change a room.

Pam I can't wait to see finished pictures!
I'm sure it will look great! And your chair will move a lot easier ;) My PIL's had bamboo flooring in their bedroom at their old house and it was BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!

My son recently installed bamboo flooring in the nursery for my DGS. The one problem that he discovered is that it dents (deep dents) very easily so be careful moving heavy objects across of it. It is beautiful flooring, so warm and welcoming.

When DH and I bought our house in 2002, it never had carpet in it since built in 1940. Only 1 owner before us, and she LOVED her hardwoods. I wouldn't trade them for the world!! Swiffer dust mop is a lot lighter than a vacuum!!! We even put hardwood in the kitchen, right over the old linoleum. I just put wood finish on it to keep it shiny & bright!! Love it!!!

Do you think you will like the bamboo better than the Pergo that you had before? Good luck

pittsburgpam 07-29-2010 05:14 PM

I'm looking at choices in bamboo and the hardness. I liked the Pergo that I did and it is a very hard surface. It's pretty easy to lay once you get the hang of it and I put it over vinyl in the kitchen and family room in my previous house.

I have read that the really dark colors show every scratch so I will go with a medium tone.

That is my dream too - to put hardwood in and have no carpets. Look forward to seeing pictures of your finished floor! I'd come help you if I lived closer - just to learn how to do it!

My husband and I were at Home Depot one day, and he said, "Do you like tile floors?" Sure, of course,I reply! Then he says, "How about this one?" (Terra Cotta) Sure, I say...Its cool!
Jump ahead 24 hours...I come home from work, walk in to bare naked floors and a pallet of TILE on my back porch!!! I almost had a heart attack!!! I'm a planner, he's a DOER. Yikes!
The terra cotta tile is lovely, easy to maintain, and our allergies dropped to almost zero after the carpet went away.
I'm all for tile and/or hardwood style floors, but I have learned to ask many more questions when we go to Home Depot!
Rosanne Barr said that if a woman goes window shopping, thats exactly what she does, but if a man goes window shopping, he comes home with a WINDOW!

I just finished up the vinyl laminate tile all by myself in my house!!!We live in an older mobile home and things dont last long in them. I have total remodel of house in the works, floor boards have been replaced with new plywood, new vinyl laminate tile. New paint. My next project is to teaor out the cabinets in my kitchen and relocate the sink over to in front of the window. We are getting new cabinets. In the bathroom, I am tearing out the built in cabinet and sink and have a beautiful white pedestal sink to put in! Gonna be awesome when done!!

I love how much better the hard floors are than carpet for sure. MY puppies havent gotten used to sliding everywhere yet but they will!

You are so right. There is so many pluses have hardwood floors. Many people do not know that they put formaldehyde in your carpets and that is very harmful to you and your family.
