Deer pulled up and ate the tops off about 24 of my tomato plants last night! What do you do to keep the deer out?

b.zang 06-09-2011 05:44 PM

Anything I want to keep away from the deer is behind a high wire fence.

I'm jealous. I just purposely purchased and planted two apple trees in hopes of luring those beautiful deer into my yard! Maybe I should plant some tomato plants too! lol.

Carol they sell some spray it's called tiger urine...that is exactly what it is too...the deer think there has been a big cat in the area and it marked it's territory. I think you can buy it at a garden supply. Good luck. crafty_linda_b

Don't laugh urine. Save it and pour it around the outside of your garden. ( or if no close neighbors have your husband "mark his territory") I'm not pulling your leg it really works. I have also before had my hairdresser save hair and spread it around the garden. Someone had on here about a month ago about bars of soap. Maybe Irish Spring, not real sure about the kind. To keep the rabbits out I sprinkle pickling lime around outside of my garden. Hope this helps, Country1, just an ol' country girl!

Irish Spring bath soap is what my friend uses around her garden. She cuts the bar of soap into several pieces places in mesh bag or leg of panty hose then hangs in garden. Puts some near the ground to keep smaller animals out. Moth balls also help.

Ever try hot pepper spray? You can make your own from the hottest peppers you can find, grind them up and spray on your veggies. Then be sure to handle them with gloves!!! Wash before eating.

I have the same problem with the deer here. When I called Fish and Game they recommended that I put out Original scent Irish Springs and some solar lighting. No problems afterwards.
