My husband has had a long standing war with his weedwacker and others before it. Can anyone recommend a good weed wacker, one that starts everytime and the little nylon stringy thing comes out when its supposed to and is not way to expensive. Needs to be gas powered too.

thanks ladies, I dont want to see DH having another temper tantrem in the yard again. You know its really bad when the neighbor calls you and says Dennis is slamming the weedwacker on the ground, oh oh, he just bent it in half threw it in the garbage can.... and the winner is DH. Then he comes in and says get your purse, we're going to Sears. I keep telling him, if you break your toys I'm not buying you new ones.

"I keep telling him, if you break your toys I'm not buying you new ones."

Hire someone to do it! :)

Or go to Tractor Supply and get their great warranty!

mimom 05-08-2011 04:52 AM

we hired our 13yr old son, but hubby still weedwacks and does tractor supplies warrenty cover battle wounds?

cjomomma 05-08-2011 05:03 AM

well that sounds like my Dad, if it doesn't work right then beat it til it does or throw it away and start over.

I have yet to find a weedwacker that works right all the time. My DH would get so aggravated that he would bring his to me and say fix it. I am the mechanical one in our household. LOL!!

MissSandra 05-08-2011 05:10 AM

I got ours from ace hardware, i don't remember the name of it but whats great is that i don't have to use those round spools of string, that seem to not work, there is an attachement or something, that lets you slip in peices of string they are pre cut but you can cut your own which would make it alot cheeper, I don't weedwack often i hire it out due to the amount that needs to be done.
I spent several hundred on ours because I like power!

DH has been there and done that, especially beating the wacker up. I solved the problem, I hired someone to cut the grass weekly, they weed wack, cut the grass, blow everything away and the part I like best, trim the lawn along side the walks and driveway. DH never trimmed until it got out of hand and then he used a shovel that left the lawn looking all hacked up.

I have an Echo brand weedwacker.. Yes I said I had one. Husband is too busy holding the sofa down to do the yard work. It pays to buy quality. Cheaper in the end to get one more expensive piece of equipment than 2 or 3 lower quality. I also have an Echo gas backpack leaf blower and a lawnboy gas lawn mower. More expensive but they work well and don't break. No problems with any of them.

sewcrafty 05-08-2011 06:14 AM

We actually got a nice one at WalMart last year. I think it was around $99. I went on line and looked at Lowes, Home Depot, etc and this one is gas and more hp than the others at higher prices. Works like OMG!!!!! One we got before this one we got from Lowes and ended up being junk. This one has some giddy-up to it.

DogHouseMom 05-08-2011 06:25 AM

We just bought a cordless electric yesterday to end the years long battle we've had with the gas powered. The good news is that the one we bought takes the same batteries as the cordless drill he uses all the time. The bonus is, I can start this one - I never could start the gas powered one.

nativetexan 05-08-2011 06:46 AM

i tell you if my electric one ever breaks, i'm getting a gas powered one. mine is so heavy and it requires me to hold the handle with a straight arm in front of me. talk about sore muscles!!!
saw a gas one where the motor is held behind you and very light weight. no brand name known though.

great aunt jacqui 05-08-2011 06:53 AM

I have gone electric. cannot pull the gas starter anymore. So I pull around extention cords. I do have a gas one to to reach far beyond the house but have to have DH start it nd I do not stop till I run out of gas. then return to the house for fill up and another pull from DH.

Prism99 05-08-2011 07:00 AM

I always research on Amazon before going to the store. The reviews often tell me what to look for and what to avoid, and sometimes give me the brand name, model number, and price. Helps me make more intelligence buying decisions.

carhop 05-08-2011 07:12 AM

Oh I have heard all of that before from DH untill I got him a Echo a little costly but it lasted and I never heard all that grumblying again.

who makes this one - is it Ryobi? I have been looking for a cordless one.

I had a B&D electric corded one that quit working literally weeks after the two year warranty expired. Here is a copy of the letter I sent to the company.

Dear Mr. Archibald,

Boy, do I feel lucky! My Black and Decker string trimmer model ST4500 lasted one whole month beyond its warranty period of two years! I was happily trimming away when it just quit. No smoke, no strange odors, no weird noises. Just stopped. I did manage to get a few extra revolutions out of it by banging the head on the ground (the trimmer, not mine) which leads me to believe there is a loose connection somewhere. I'm sure if I took it to a repair shop and paid, say, twice as much as it originally cost, I could get it fixed or be told it is not worth fixing.
Fortunately I had a spare - a B&D Groomer Edger 600 that I believe to be about 18-20 years old and it still works. It is heavier than the new one, which is a problem for me because I have bad wrists (carpal tunnel), but I did get the yard finished.
Now, one of these fine B&D products was made in the US and one was made in Mexico. Do I have to say which is which?
So, depending on what kind of a company you are running there, perhaps you will send me a new trimmer, or send me the $20 I paid for it, or just congratulate your wonderful workforce on producing a product that lasts just the right amount of time to maximize profits.

They sent me a new trimmer.

granma1 05-08-2011 08:01 AM

We have a DR wheeled trimmer. It starts with a key , very nice. But it is a monster. It has a blade that will cut down saplings. I do not use that thing. I have an old Craftsman That I use to trim around the flower beds.

redkimba 05-08-2011 09:38 AM

I bought an Echo that I like. It uses 2 separate strands that you feed into each side of the head.

PS - I have some parts of the yard that are a little overgrown. May I borrow the goats for an afternoon?

BellaBoo 05-08-2011 10:06 AM

DH bought a John Deere lawn tractor and a weed eater came with it as a promotional gift. It must be pretty good, he hasn't cursed the tractor or the weedeater. He feels about his lawn equipment like I do my quilting tools. They have to work and work perfect when we want to use them.

I have had the same problem so I went to the local Home Depot and got one that has 2 wheels and kind of goes to a point in the front. It goes anywhere and is easy to start and maneuver. Runs on regular gas. I know Sears has them and most hardware stores. It works Great for me!! The neighbors saw mine and went and got one for themselves. So easy to use.

sandpat 05-09-2011 05:52 AM

Hmmm....I think I've had them all. I've worn out several Sears ones, a couple of Ryobi, a John Deere and currently I have a Troy-Bilt TB70SS.

First and foremost...Buy a Straight shaft!! I will NEVER own another bent one..kills the back.

The Troy that I currently have is the easiest to start than any that I've ever had. The string part is a bit confusing though because it uses the "split" string. Not bad though. It has good power and is fairly light weight. I can weed eat for several hours and I'm a 5 foot, 110 lb. woman. Overall, I'd give it a good rating.

The John Deere..I tore out the shaft twice...not good. Loved the great saw blade that I could switch out though. It was a bit temperamental when it came to starting, but I could usually get it running without DH's help. Didn't buy another one due to the insides of the shaft breaking so easily.

The Ryobi was a great started...but I wore it out in 1 year. Great power though and I liked the design where we could switch out the heads.

The Sears ones...I wouldn't walk across the street if they were giving them away for free.

Having said all that....the very BEST weed eater...even better than Billy's goats is.....Round Up. :D

Loosethreads 05-09-2011 07:26 AM

We are an Echo dealer because they are a great product. Living in a rural area in So Cal we have fires to deal with and need to keep our property clear. Our customers love the easy start and dependability of the Echo trimmers. You need to keep a gas stabilizer in your gas mix because of the Calif. gas, it eats up primer bulbs, fuel line and carb.

grannypat7925 05-09-2011 07:45 AM

We got one of the Worx from infomercial on TV and he loves it. Used it all last year and no problem. Ready to go again this year.

Linda - K. 05-09-2011 08:14 AM

We have 5 acres and my husband is always out whacking the weeds as soon as they show their little pointy heads! We've gone through about 4 in the 18 years we've lived here. The best one we have found and he likes is the brand Stihl. They are not cheap but are sturdy and we have few problems with it.

TMK 05-09-2011 08:32 AM

I work for a Stihl authorized dealer. The FS45 is a great unit. Most places it runs about $150. Best bet is to buy from a dealer who sells and services their equipment.

carol43 05-09-2011 08:33 AM

Now I know why my husband wants goats!

His answer to anything that doesn't work is to beat it with a hammer.

Needles 05-09-2011 08:44 AM

DH just got a new one last month, a Weed Eater, from K-Mart, I think it was $89. It replaced his ten year old one, also a Weed Eater. In FL, lawn care is every 4-5 days from April thru Oct., and he does a lake edge. His old one still worked (10 years) but the cord broke. It always started for him on the first pull, the new one does too.

We did buy new cord and he repaired the old one, so he has a spare if need be. I checked the papers on our Toro mower recently as it's self propelled and when it's wet and dewy in the morning, doesn't work so well. Got it in Dec. 1993.
I suppose the drive belt has seen better days. Don't you think it should last longer than 17 years? :-)

My hubby swears by his ECHO.

HisPatchwork 05-09-2011 10:36 AM

My DH, Dennis, definitely votes for the Echo...he has the SB125.{i think that is the number..his is a split boom and he also bought the chain saw attachement...loves that too!} My son has used one for years...they both say it is balanced perfectly and easier to use because of it. All I know is that my husband doesn't holler at it and says how glad he is that he finally bought his own.

skothing 05-09-2011 12:32 PM

How about some sheep? Or a goat for the .......HEHE

LOL.. we have a standard joke when something doesn't work, I ask DH if he wants me to get the hammer!

shawnan 05-09-2011 01:05 PM

This is the same for us. DH has several batteries for tools and one is always charged and ready to go for the wacker. It is B & D I think. I really don't know much about it as DH does all the yard work.

janetter 05-09-2011 03:49 PM

I agree with Sweet something with a great warrenty. I HATE weedwacking

KarenB 05-09-2011 04:46 PM

the worx. I think I spelled that correctly. We ordered ours online, but they have them at Lowe's. It is light weight and works very well.

girardgirl61 05-09-2011 05:54 PM

We have a Shindowa, expensive, but the first one lasted 18 years. We have friends who hav to buy one every few years, so over all ours is pretty cheap. We are on number 2 now and starts the first pull everytime and is awesome. Love it.

carla m 05-09-2011 07:22 PM

wow im impressed you guys have husbands who do yard work ??
my hubby hates yard work and it takes 3 weeks to get him out there he refuses to weed eat and my asthsema just wont let me weed eat. so theres this young guy who comes in a truck and weed eats and mows whenever i call and hes pretty reasonable too its cheaper to call him and a whole lot less stressful than trying to get hubby out there. my hubby is alot better doing computer stuff than mowing the yard and he usually works 6 days a week so i just call the yard guy.

Yep weed control and fertilizer all in one. Think my kids might be more involved in yardwork if we went this route LOL!

I have a Poulon Pro. I like it, have had it for a few years now (3). So long as it has fresh gas, I don't have any problems.

Mimito2 05-09-2011 07:36 PM

My DH knows how to fix everything! Spray it full of starting fluid every time you can and eventually the pistons will burn up and you can buy a new one. He has been "working" on our riding mower since Feb. Grass is almost hay in places and I am ready to get "my" weedeater and kill it all.
