Morning All,

I joke about using 'Special Shampoo'. Loreal Preferance-9GR. This is the closest to my natural color. I only use it about 3 times a year as I am just starting to go gray. We redheads fade to biegey-brown blah.

Lucille Ball wasn't born a redhead but I was and I will go out a soft red-blonde.
My sister has been dying her hair for 50 years and said J.C. when are you going to go gray. She was the only one with black hair. We other 5 had red of different shades. 10th grade biology teachers were amazed but that is genetics.
My secret is that I had my eyebrows tatooed-on. Should have done it 20years ago. My brows are blonde and almost invisable but now are brown. Love it!

quiltlin 07-02-2010 06:14 AM

Every five weeks whether I need it or not. It's the one true indulgence I allow myself.

White and gray hair have different texture, a texture I don't like. My first 30 years, before the white, I was a natural blond. So, every 7 weeks or so, I get a semi-permanent dye job that starts out a medium blond and gradually fades to light blond with white at the temples. No demarcation line as the hair grows back. And, the texture is better, the hair not so dry. Suits me so I'll stick with it.

Don't color my hair or nails. Hardly ever wear makeup just suntan lotion. Only jewelry is my wedding ring. All of that takes away from what I want to do. I sew, I garden and I play with my animals (along with volunteering, painting, writing) I like my silver hair and my wrinkles. Shows I have lived a good life full of ups and downs. I am 56 and people keep wanting to give me senior discounts. Who am I to turn them down?

charcrfts 07-02-2010 09:02 AM

I'm a hairdresser, who hasn't worked in a shop for about 30 years. I didn't color my hair until 2 years ago, when two of our sons decided to get married three weeks apart! Both of their MILs to be were the same age as I am and color their hair, well I didn't want to be the old looking one! :o So even though I don't have a lot of grey hair, I decided to color it and have kept it up since. The trick is to go a little lighter as you get older, it looks more natural. I,m blessed with hard nails and used to polish all the time, now just mostly for special occasions. My hubby has never like me to wear makeup, but I do put a little on for special occasions also.

sewjean 07-02-2010 09:36 AM

I started out dyeing my hair when I was 17 and have always done something to it. I have bleached it for a loooong time now. I am 62. and I can't imagine my hair grey. I do it my self and I also cut it myself. doesn't cost much when it is done at home. I do wear some make up not much, but I do love lipstick, no not red! lol had a sister that was grey in her early 20's another sister dyed hers untill hers until the very last month of her life. another one quit dying hers. I guess I will always color mine.

laralea 07-02-2010 09:44 AM

Yes! I wash that gray right outta my hair! I'm not giving into the gray as long as I have to be in the workforce, especially when I'm job hunting. I don't look my age, but the gray could give it away for sure. Maybe when I can retire 10 - 15 yrs from now, I'll give in.

zyxquilts 07-02-2010 10:00 AM

I have very fine, straight hair, that I get cut every 6 weeks & permed every 18 weeks. I do use a box of color a couple times a year - not really because of the gray that's there, but because it makes the perm last longer! And with no perm, my hair is soooo flat to my head that I look like a pinhead.... I never really learned how to put on makeup - tried mascara in HS, but kept rubbing it into my eyes, so gave that up! lol No nail polish, toes or fingers. (My sisters painted my toenails once & I felt like my toes were suffocating! ) As good ol' Popeye says "I yam what I yam!" :D

horsefeather41 07-02-2010 10:09 AM

used to dye my hair, but keep it so short that dyeing it is a waste of time and money any more, Besides with 6 kids, 2 boys that are now gone and 4 girls, 23 grands, 13 greatgrands,
I think I've earned ever gray hair, wrinkle and my fat, i don't wear makeup since retired so will be what i am and wear like a
Badge of honor.

Hey lady, your roots are showing...

Ramona Byrd 07-02-2010 12:17 PM

I was born with natural red hair, as were my two sons.
Unfortunately, the youngest and I both started to darken
hair when we started to school.

I am still a red head, sorta, and will remain that way as
long as I can find L'Oreal in the stores.

Up North 07-02-2010 12:20 PM

After reading this thread and saying no I do not dye my hair I had my GF add highlights today, Woa when it was wet it was ORANGE! Not so bad after I dried it. My hair is short so it grows out fast. I kinda like it tho! Gives me a whole different look and hides that salt in the pepper!!

katiebear1 07-02-2010 03:39 PM

I haven't seen my natual hair color since I was 25! I am 55 now and I still color my hair just because it would take too long to grow out. No makeup or nail polish ,and only makeup if I am going somewhere special. Also no bra unless I am going out of the house LOL

brushandthimble 07-02-2010 04:22 PM

Only my hairdresser knows LOL

Greendragon6889 07-02-2010 04:49 PM

Decided to stop dying my hair 10 yrs ago..Was dark brunette and now is almost all over Silver...I actually buy shampoo to make the silver stand out...People compliment on it all the time...had to dye every three weeks...got to be a pain in the neck..

dljennings 07-02-2010 05:07 PM

i have coarse curly hair that hangs just about to my waist... the natural color used to be the red of an irish setter, but now i have to get that out of a bottle...
i found my first grey hair when i was taking my sat test... in 1978.

i have thought about stopping, but the only way i can think to do it is cut the hair off... then i'd have to "do" my hair @ 500 am b4 work.... i don't think i want to get up early for that!

have my nails done every 3 weeks, no fail, can't sew, type, garden anything without them... they've been on so long

being a really fair redhead, i look a lot like a corpse without at least a little blusher on... that being said, i'm on vacation this week, and not putting on any!!

summerstorm 07-02-2010 05:14 PM

Ok, you asked for it. I have a hair puller (epilady) and used it a few times on my legs. We have been remodeling forever, and it was lost. I found it this week and de-haired my legs and it went pretty well.

I had the bright idea to do my underarms. Now I have very little body hair and away I go, started with the left arm (right handed), hurt like hell and fool that I am I started on the right. A few tear later I go to the bathroom to admire my hairless pits, I have bright red blood spots under both arms. I used cortisone cream for several days.

I will dye my hair as long as there is a bottle of anything on the shelf in the stores. Love slut red toe nails but right now have pink per hubby's wish.

Make up at times, jewerly on occassion but love nice underwear.

Blessings,

Sharon

I'm 57 and totally have white hair. It started turning when I was in my 20s-as did my mother's and sisters'. I do not dye my hair, but use a shampoo to make the silver shine. I get lots of compliments on it. Recently I was at a software sampler club and this woman rushed over to me after the meeting. She said, "I just had to tell you how beautiful your hair is!" I have natural waves in my hair and it has lots of body. My silver hair suits me. I'm glad that I decided early on to grow old gracefully. It's a lot less stressful!

adrianlee 07-02-2010 05:23 PM

I used to use the shampoo in color when I was in my 30's. Then about 20 years ago, hubby asked if a dog had pee-peed on my head as my hair color had washed out some and was looking this funny yellow mixed among the brown. Well (nose out of joint) I stopped coloring it.
HazelJane, my "girls" look at the floor now days. I'm 66.

IdaGudrun 07-02-2010 05:28 PM

I used to dye my hair but I quite to find out what color my hair is, and because my sisters are going gray at 24 and 28. I haven't gone gray yet, but will most likely just be natural even then.
I used to get manicures every couple of weeks, now it might be once a month. And I used to spray my hair so high back in the ninties that my Dad used to laugh at me. I laughed too.

isnthatodd 07-02-2010 05:38 PM

I have been blessed with hair that is still brown at 60 (from my dad's side). I prefer to go wash and wear, but use a blower brush to tame the frizz. I get a pedicure about every 4-5 weeks because I can no longer do my own. Quit shaving years ago, but I wear pants to work and long skirts to church and my hubby doesn't mind. No polish. Like someone else said, I feel like my nails are suffocating when I have polish on. No makeup. Like many of you, I am who I am. I hope my character is more important than my looks.

amorerm 07-02-2010 06:53 PM

I'm 60 and have been coloring my hair for about 10 years. About a year ago I decided to stop. Just got tired of the process and cost. Guess what...I actually like it. It sort of looks like it's bleached. I was originally a mousy blonde. I have also decided to let it grow. I read an article asking, "Why do older woman always wear their hair short." It was on a woman's site on the net. Also, it said, "Men like more hair a woman". Hey....I'll try anything. LOL Kidding!!!!!! Not looking.

martapr 07-02-2010 07:34 PM

I've never colored my hair and do not plan to do so. I'm happy w/my hair. In fact, I get a lot of compliments from men stating that they wish that their wives would just let their hair go grey.

jbj137 07-02-2010 08:22 PM

I inherited the white gene from my maternal grandparents and started turning in high school. Kept it that natural color (totally white by 35) until after the divorce at 46.
Then started dying it cause no one wanted to date what the thought was an old gray haired lady.
Still having it colored at 63.

juneayerza 07-02-2010 11:06 PM

At 63, 99 and 9/10% of my hair is still very dark. However, the rest of me looks all of 63 plus, so I do a reverse color on my hair because the lighter frosting makes my wrinkles looks better. Before I started doing this, people thought I dyed my hair dark anyway and didn't believe me when I said no. Now I'm proud to have my dark roots show. LOL

puck116 07-03-2010 05:49 AM

I do color my hair, but hate to have to do it. I look like my mother and I'm hoping someday to turn the beautiful silver gray that she was. Haven't gotten there yet. Oh! and I have my nails done since my daughter was 14 and we went for a mother/daughter nail treatment. I kept it up and she didn't. That I won't give up and pedicures once in a while.

ania755 07-03-2010 06:48 AM

No way..... I trust nature is beautiful and knows best....

EagarBeez 07-03-2010 08:00 AM

I used to cover the gray, but, My hair is salt and pepper and still a bit of brown. I've been complimented on the color and I love it now. I am a grandma and I am not afraid to show those gray's

rb. 07-03-2010 08:10 AM

From my teens, up until I had my first baby at 29, I coloured my hair (lots of colours...my hair was a wardrobe accessory LOL), had very long nails that were always done, and makeup just to go to the mailbox. Once I started having kids, dye went out the window, along with nail polish and makeup. Just no time. The grey started popping up about 38 (I'm 44 now), and I loved it. Nature's sparkles. I loved the amount, the placement (spots of it, right where I part my hair for bangs), the colour and shine. Then I discovered that my poker-straight, exceptionally fine, very thin hair benefited in volume by dyeing it. Been doing it for a year now, and look like I have a proper amount of hair again. I miss my sparkles, but I love the new volume.

I still only wear makeup once or twice a year. Nails will NOT be done ever again because I now have a horrible reaction to the smell of nail polish and remover. When one of my girls use it anywhere in the house I know right away, and have to run around opening all the windows...even when it's -20.

Granny B 07-04-2010 10:38 AM

Back in the 70s I decided that I wanted to try being a blond. The next day we played golf and my hair turned green in the sun!!!!! I had her dye it back as close as possible to my natural color. That was the extent of my trying to look different.

Lynnc 07-04-2010 01:37 PM

I'm 55 and will keep dyeing my hair until who knows when. My husband once told me I didn't need to do it for him. I asked him why would I do it for him!!. I love the guy though. I do it because my hair which is down to my waist, is the only thing I feel proud of. I have scoliosis and am bent over really bad and use a mobility scooter. My hair grows so fast I have to color it every 3 to 4 weeks, but I'm worth it. Well, my ego is.

Ditter43 07-04-2010 03:33 PM

I don't color it any more. I've always had strawberry blonde hair and brown eyes.My hair is getting grayer but still looks more blonde then grey. I quit wearing makeup for the most part when I retired. I wear glasses and can't see to put mascara on without making a mess. My GD asked me last week why I don't paint my toenails(she's almost 5) It's so much easier this way....I am wash and go ready..... :D

nannya54 07-05-2010 04:42 AM

I am not getting gray. I am highlighting naturally.

Honestly from a guys stand point Grey in a womans hair is sexy to me and I never had a problem with it. It shows maturity and lets me know that you do not mind aging gracefully, also it shows confidence. But as far as I am concerned I am past the salt and pepper stage and going head first in the grey area and I am not in the least bit worried about it.

Even though I am 44 and I had to go through hell getting all of these grey hairs and by golly I am showing them off!!! Plus I keep getting looks and flirts from younger women so it must be pleasing to the eye.

I guess I am just a Big Sexy Daddy!!

sew_southern 07-05-2010 08:15 AM

I'm 40 and I don't have gray hair, the name on the box says Light Golden Brown! Lol :)

Now I only wear full makeup to church, to a nice resturaunt or other important event. Only eyeliner & mascara everywhere else, none if I'm home.

pollyjvan9 07-05-2010 08:54 AM

Natural Gray (white) in front still dark in back. My hair grows so fast I always looked like a skunk when I had my hair colored. Only tried it a very few times. I like my hair, makes me look like my Dad. Blush, lipstick and mascara with a very light eye shadow unless going somewhere special. At home, What You See Is What You Get!

Well bully for you :) It's nice to hear a guys point of view though!!!!! I, however, am not planning on going gray for a very long time, though...My husband is well aware that he better budget for me to get my hair highlighted and colored ;)

Up North 07-05-2010 02:08 PM

Billy, I also deserved and earned each and every grey hair. About once every other year I decide to frost mine but my hubby is 10 years older than me and has been grey since he was 30 and his hair is snow white like his moms!!. Mine is mostly dark with a few a few silvers through out it like my moms. She is 80 and still has mostly dark hair.

thismomquilts 07-05-2010 02:15 PM

I am 48 and have very little grey - people SAY they still have to look close to see any. I do not and will not ever dye my hair - I see nothing wrong with doing it - I just don't want the hassle... I'd rather just have grey and not worry about if it's covered or not... figure if I don't start I won't have to keep it up... our very grey haired pastor still does not believe that I don't color my hair!!

zz-pd 07-05-2010 09:57 PM

I am a natural blond, so my gray hair are white, which provides me with natural high lights. God bless. Penny
