I also have this problem. I am an avid reader but, even the reading doesn't seem to help it.

All the time!LOL

I used to do that to my husband when he was overseas. I even used a red pencil, sent him a dictionary, sent him a list of his spelling mistakes, but guess what he didn't care!!Ha Ha It wasn't until he was going up for promotion that he started checking his spelling.

do you use Firefox as your browser. it is a free download if you don't. it has spell check built in. that way, you can spell the word as close as possible. then when the browser underlines it in red, right click on the word and it will give you suggestions. i use it all of the time :)

No, I don't have Firefox, but that is what I need!!! Thank you for the info.

I, too have been a reporter, taught English at the high school level, taught government and economics at the high school level, taught writing to classes and individuals, have been paid to write chapters in specialized books. I have a dictionary--a real, paper dictionary--and just yesterday used it to be sure of the definition of a word I wanted to use because it sounds so pretty. While I could spell it, I discovered that it didn't mean anything close to what I thought it did. Hooray for dictionaries and other such aids. I don't know anyone who does not occasionally need them. froggyintexas

Not really, but then I've been an editor and proofreader several times over the years, taught ESL when I lived overseas, worked as a reporter, etc. My ex was in the Navy and when I got his first letter I sent it back with all his spelling and grammer corrected - he should have know then, right? I can be a noodge but have learned to not return letters with corrections anymore. I'm sure it will catch up with me at some time, but so far I haven't had that problem. Lots of other problems, but spelling and grammar are still intact. For today, anyway.

I just open my office Word, type the word in there because it has spell check. Sometimes that helps sometimes not. It is also suppose to do grammer check but I've found it isn't 100% right because it has at times made suggestions that didn't make sense.

I teach a Microsoft Word class where students learn how to type letters, reports, etc. and have a hard time convincing them that Spellcheck does not proofread for them.

Yes, I do this, I thought I was the only one. After I spell a word wrong, no matter how many times I try I can never get it to look correct.

LindaJR 06-24-2012 07:37 AM

I to have that problem. And sometimes my DWR (diminished word retrieval) hits at same time and I cannot think of a word to replace the oe I am having trouble spelling. I have found the older I get the DWR is around a lot!!

mountain deb 06-27-2012 05:12 AM

I do on occasion, but get around it eventually. I read a book a while back where someone went through and corrected all the mistakes. Hardly a page that was not touched. I loved it and still have it.

Yes, it worsens with age. I have always been an absolute stickler about spelling, and its difficult when I can't remember now. I write it down till it 'looks' right and keep a pocket size dictionary in my purse now. It's become a problem since menopause...but I'll keep this problem and not have to deal with the other every month!
