A year ago, I decided to learn to knit and a friend at work offered to teach me. Nine months ago, I realized that knitting was the most BORING thing I'd ever tried....so my teacher offered to finish my scarf for me. Now I have a beautiful knitted scarf that needs fringe----and I can't decide how long to make the fringe. If you have a fringed scarf that you love, will you please humor me and measure it without fringe (width and length) and then measure the length of the fringe?

I know I'm sounding really anal but I used to be a math teacher and darn it, I NEED A FORMULA!!!!!! You know.....one inch of fringe per linear foot of scarf OR the square root of the square root of the area of the scarf, all in inches ....or something like that. But does this exist in the modern world as we know it? Not that I can find!!!!!

Last year I discovered that I didn't have a scarf to match my blue jacket and the wind was sharp and cold. So I wore the jacket and bought a yard of patterned fleece that matched my jacket. I cut it wide enough to be comfy (about 7 inches) and then cut the ends a trifle longer than my full hand extension, which made the cuts 8 inches long. In fleece they were thin and narrow but attractive finish to the easy scarf. I'll bring it out the first time the jacket comes out.

I think the fringe should be as long as you like it and no longer. As for more elegant ones, I have my mothers' silky flowered evening scarf with fringe that must be 15 inches long, and rather difficult to keep smooth. But well worth it for the elegance it gives plain dresses.

I did mine by finding the half way point of ends of scarfs and that was my starting point for beginning of fringe.
I tapered it so the longest came from the middle section on the scarf.
As Ramona says 15" is a good measure; but your actual cut is 30'' folded.
when you are doing a vee-slant backward
use 30",28"x2(sides), 26"x2,24"x2, 22"x2, and so on depending how wide your scarf is.
When I knit mine I would use 5 yarns all at the same time so when it came time to do fringe it came out beautiful.

The scarf I got in high school has fringe six inches long. I still use it--I graduated hs in 1965.
