Does your dog ever sleep bark???

Well, last night I didn't get a whole lot of sleep...at 3am Tinkerbelle decided to stand up on the bed and bark out the window. She doesn't normally bark much...just when the UPS man comes.(She doesn't like him).
She was standing there and giving about 1 bark every 30-60 seconds...and had her eyes closed. This went on for 45 minutes....a long 45 minutes.
I talked to her, told her no one was out there, looked out the window several times...but she continued to bark every minute. I even bopped her on her rear end after about 30 minutes of this, it didn't even faze her.
So...has this ever happened with your dog??? or, do I have the nut in the group....

Casper yips in his sleep, usually laying on the floor next to me. Once in a great while, he chases something--legs are running like crazy. Pretty funny to watch.

Liz92B 08-02-2012 12:25 PM

my sister had a dog that would 'speak' while sleeping, yips, yaps, arfs and woofs - you name it!

Learner747 08-02-2012 01:22 PM

Yes! Our little poodle does quite often. His paws move and his body squirms. The other day he barked and woke himself up. He came running to me and tucked his body behind mine. Must have been a big dog. :D

momto5 08-02-2012 05:10 PM

I have three poodles and they all do some form of it, but I never have had one get up and stand on his/her hind legs and bark like they were awake. Now, when they're awake, that's a whole different story.

Lois-nounoe 08-02-2012 05:15 PM

Don't have a dog at precent time but our cats make noises in their sleep. Ever hear a cat snore?? Funny as heck!! One night I was SO TIRED! Went to bed and heard the cats snoring! It was so funny I couldn't get to sleep after all!

Jingle 08-02-2012 05:53 PM

Out of the five little dogs I have had over the years, all but two has made all kinds of sounds while asleep. All the hyper ones seem to do it. Some even yipped, don't think any barked.
I do have a 16 year old cat that will 'talk' if he runs out of water or wants out of the room. Sounds like he is trying to say hello with out the Ls. He makes other noises also. He is wide awake.

Neesie 08-02-2012 05:54 PM

Phoebe will sleep-yip, growl, or "run-in-place" but has never sleep-walked. She's probably too lazy, for that.

paulswalia 08-02-2012 05:59 PM

Our 4 month old Yellow Lab, Molly, does not bark while awake. She has, however, barked, yipped and yapped while sleeping. Last night she woke us up barking in her sleep. I went to her side and she woke up, looking really dazed - musta been a good dream!!!

Rose_P 08-02-2012 06:41 PM

I have had dogs all my life and have never had one that stood up and barked continuously with eyes closed like that. It seems pretty unusual to me, although I've had many that "trot" and yip while sleeping on their sides. I would say that it's odd enough that if your dog does that again, you might want to ask your vet for an opinion about it.

I wonder what would happen if you picked Tinkerbelle up while she was doing this. You might want to be careful, though, because if she's dreaming about something bad, she might make a mistake and nip you!

burchquilts 08-02-2012 09:39 PM

Our old dog (is that the correct way to refer to him? "My before dog"?), Yankee, was super active when he slept. We always used to joke that he had to take extra naps to make up for how exhausting his sleep was! He barked. He nursed. He licked his lips. He growled. He wagged his tail. He ran in place. He whimpered. His "eyebrows" danced all around. He flopped back & forth. He kicked. He burped. He wiggled his toes. But he did all this laying down. I've never heard of a dog literally sleep barking, but I'm sure stranger things have happened!

Stitchit123 08-03-2012 03:12 AM

My little manchester-Midnight is 2 1/2 yrs old she has never barked, she snores and lets out little yips in her sleep.but upon moving to Missouri we now live near a rail road track and when the whistle blows she now howls with it.But she still won't bark. Now if I could get the other 2 to stop barking at falling leaves or moving grass I'd have it made.

k9dancer 08-03-2012 03:21 AM

Our dogs do all sorts of funny things while sleeping, but they are lying down when they do it. Our oldest dog manages to bark with a mouth full of toy. Don't know how she does that!

unicorn53 08-03-2012 04:31 AM

Like people, animals are all different. Sounds to me like your dog is dreaming. It's rather funny to watch an animal in dream mode, although I've never seen one that barks, etc. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen! My Cats both snore! My one cat has chronic sinusitis, like me. My husband says we all make noises when we sleep, Ha!

SouthPStitches 08-03-2012 04:49 AM

All my dogs would dream, make odd yipping, barking noises, and their feet would move. I'm thinking maybe your dog might have had a nightmare. Perhaps it heard or smelled something from outside that you couldn't detect. Is you dog old enough to start having some cognitive issues?

sweet 08-03-2012 04:53 AM

A long long time ago my little Pom would sleep on her back on the sofa. Every hour the clock would chime and she would bark back at it in her sleep, not moving an inch.

MadamPolo 08-03-2012 04:53 AM

Funny I should see this post today. I have never had a dog that barks in his sleep, but in an entry today on Facebook, my niece was complaining that her dog did just that. She wished she understood dog language to see what he was saying. We were crating our dog at night, but now she spends the night outside. We live in the country.

Caswews 08-03-2012 05:08 AM

Brie barks, yipes, talks in her sleep .. LOL by talking I mean she grunts, and makes weird noises ..we just laugh .. She has even woke us up at 3 am wiht her barking ..we walk around and see nothing, try to go back to sleep !LOL

tdgiffin 08-03-2012 07:23 AM

Mine all made little noises when they slept. Two of them ran in their sleep. Their legsmwould get going. My chihuahua snores horribly. He sounds like a little bee. He sleeps under my chin, and it puts me to sleep!

linynp 08-03-2012 09:24 AM

We have a dog and cat that snore in their sleep. We do not have the barking in the sleep, but we have a dog that wakes me up around 6:30 barking at the next door cat that torments her. And also the cat in the house attacks the dog in the morning. So I get very little sleep after 6:30 in the morning.

Dakota Girl 08-03-2012 11:18 AM

Our Black Lab, Sam, does this occasionally. Sometimes her legs will also twitch as she barks. I have always thought
that she may be dreaming...........do dogs dream?............ It lasts for only a short time. I have especially noticed it when she is tired from running.

nygal 08-03-2012 11:32 AM

My dog doesn't even bark once a month!! She is a lab mix and 9 yrs. old and even when she was a puppy she wasn't very noisy.

Ccorazone 08-03-2012 03:08 PM

Haven't had our new puppy barking in her sleep yet, but her little stubby tail go 90 to nothing sometime. Funny to watch.

SmickChick 08-03-2012 03:24 PM

Woof, woof....that's yes, they do dream and chase critters when sleeping!

purplefiend 08-03-2012 05:03 PM

all 4 of my dogs do that.

jeanharville 08-03-2012 07:20 PM

Next time it happens, take a movie of it and send it to America's Funniest Videos. I bet you'd win :>)

ctipton 08-03-2012 08:27 PM

I had a Great Dane who could say 'Ruffles have Ridges ' when we asked her too. Thought DEAR OLD UNC WAS GOING TO BUST HIS BELT LAUGHING SO HARD. Poodle mostly just sleep yipping on his side.I would watch Tink though. How old is she and what did she do that day???.My old poodle would be a wreck if I left the t.v. on with loud or grouchy panel shows, politics stuff (a.k.a. yelling t.v.) like that.I had to make sure it was on a kid channel or cooking shows.

One of my first dogs growing up used to RUN and yip in his sleep. I used to have a Boxer and she would fart in her sleep, but it was so bad it would wake her up from a sound sleep - then she would look around and walk off in a huff. I also used to have a cat who would suckle in her sleep (on nothing). Animals dream too - I have always wondered if they watch us when we dream????

dorrell ann 08-04-2012 09:13 AM

We had a $1,000 plus dog that we got at a steel "except" the fool barked all the time mostly at night -He was a lovable yorkie that we were using for stud.......We lost him which was so sad- but the good thing about it my husband has finnally had good night sleeps after 2 years of restless ones!

My DS & DIL have a Bassett Hound & our jokes is that she barks once a week, whether she needs to or not! LOL! She just doesn't bark & that seems so foreign to me!

Has she scared herself by barking yet? I had a puppy who was scared to death of his own bark! Then he'd bark at the noise (which was his bark to begin with) & it was just too funny!

That's what we always say... Leo is chasing bunnies in his sleep! Hey, I dream of fabric (my love) & he dreams of bunnies (his love)!!!

Our neighbors had a pug who would chase the words crawling across the bottom of the TV (like on CNN or whatever). He thought somehow they ended up in the back of the TV!

I also had a Golden who would sing along with the song "Ghostbusters"... LOL!

QultingaddictUK 08-06-2012 08:51 AM

Muffin does all sort of things in her sleep, yelps, barks moves her legs I just say, oh she's chasing rabbits again :) It's just a doggy dream, or nightmare, normally a cuddle sorts it out.

IBQLTN 08-06-2012 09:47 AM

Well, I've never had one stand up to bark in their sleep but I've had a couple of furbabies who run in their sleep (laying on their side) and making a muffled bark sound.

Sounds like you've got your hands full!

Too cute!
