I was walking my shih tzu dog last night and all of a sudden he took off running and then fell to the ground. He starting licking his right leg and was limping. I got him to house and took him to vet.
The vet gave him a shot and now he is on antibiotics, he is very sleepy. So be careful walking your dogs. |

wow... never thought about animals being allergic to bee stings.
|

So sorry to hear about your little dog. Hope he feels better soon.
Our Malamute mix was stung on and in his mouth when he was a puppy, he was chasing bees and unbeknown to us tried to eat one. His face swelled up like a balloon, it happened very late in the afternoon and it didn't show effect 'til later in the evening. I rang the emergency vet and they said to ice it and watch his breathing. His breathing was fine and by the next morning the swelling was down, thanks to a pack of frozen peas and constant monitoring. But, I do believe some dogs (like people) can become very sick with beestings. |
yes, I was scared to death, I called our vet office was closed, so I called another one that is open 24 hours and said to get dog to vet immediately as they can die from it, so I called a friend that works for a vet (luckly the vet was in his office from 6:00 - 7:00 pm and so I took him immediately!

I had this happen to our basset! Called the vet pronto and they told us to give him Benadryl. The bee stung him on the snout!
Bassets always lead with their nose! I am glad your baby is better! |

Bassets always lead with their nose! I am glad your baby is better! you should always have benadryl on hand..even for spider bites, my husband was bit while sleeping, and his face swelled up. |
Glad hes doing good now!!! I have a dog that chases bees all the time and I can't make her stop! She got stung on the lip one time and it swelled up. Ever seen a dog with a fat lip? It was so pitiful that is was funny.

My tammy got stung wounce herface swelled up gave her Benadryl and she was fine . Vet told us to keep Benadryl in the first aid kit for dogs So now we have the Benadryl on hand at all times.

Ouch, poor puppy. I hope he is going to be ok. We have to watch for rattle snakes here. They offer classes for owners as to what to do if pet is bitten.
|
My dog sticks his face into fire ant hills and blisters where they sting him. Stupid dog. I do watch to make sure he doesn't swell up though. I keep Benadryl on hand (usually for me as I'm allergic to mosquito bites) Glad to know I can give them to him if necessary.

Both our dogs have issues with allergies - Sadie gets ear infections from them. Heidi just gets the runny nose and eyes. Yes, our 4-legged friends can suffer just like we do.
|
update about Felix my dog that got stung by a bee, he is doing fine now, he is still taking his daily meds for the next 5 days. he slept good last night
Thanks everyone for your cares and concerns. |
Wow I'm allergic to bees, but never thought about my pets. Thanks for info.
|
My two boxers are highly allergic to bees. My fawn boy swells up with welts and has to be given a steroid to help reduce the swelling. My white girl is allergic also, but not as bad as my boy. She swells up all over but benadryl helps her. I had to rush my boy to the emergency vet because his breathing was labored. So our 4 legged babies are just as prone to the same things as our 2 legged babies.

Glad Felix is okay.
Both my dogs have been stung on walks. Not chasing bees. Just while walking. They are very short Chihuahuas so were stung in their muzzles. Horrible swelling. I have Benadryl because both dogs have other allergies. It didn't work with the first dog so the vet said to take him in to emergency. Costs $219 each time. Didn't bother trying the Benadryl on the second dog. One dog is allergic to something the neighbor's exterminator uses. Spider bites, too. |
I just took Felix out for a walk and had to be careful, he saw 2 bees and freaked out, so I picked him up and told him he had to walk on cement and driveway, not worth getting stung again
(the clover in our yard is bad this year, hubby will mow Friday) Thanks again everyone for your concerns and be careful walking your dogs. |
I started a thread for us to post pictures of our pets
I just posted 3 of Felix! http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-48214-1.htm |
I had no idea they could be allergic to bee stings. Thanks for the heads up.
