Double Bed
 

I just finished binding a quilt and, though I knew its dimensions, was a bit disappointed when I realized it was a wee bit small for the queen bed in the guest room. I don't have any double beds, in fact I hate them. My parents slept in a double bed for decades, but I don't know how they did it. When DH and I are visiting and encounter a double bed in someone's guest room, I always end up sleeping (or trying to) on the floor. I admit to turning down invitations to visit people who have only a double bed to offer (I never tell them the truth, just make up a polite excuse.)

Thinking about it made me curious as to what others think of double beds and whether you can actually sleep in them with another person.

Heck ! Even a king sized bed gets small with a husband and a dog in bed with me. !

My husband and I have been sleeping in a full size bed for 53 years. Our room can't take a bigger size bed.
I guess when you have no choice you make do. But I love it when we go away and can sleep on a queen or king size.

When we were younger, it was harder to stay mad for a long time when we slept in a double bed together! :p

Or - to put it another way - with a king sized bed, the distance between a couple can get longer and colder as time passes!

We can manage in a double - but I do prefer at least a queen -sized bed for sleeping now. But sometimes the couch is okay too if I'm having a really restless night.

I used to think it was AWFUL when (usually older) married people slept in separate beds.

same with my house. Small rooms so we have a double.

Broke my 5th metatarsal on June 20. Thank goodness for at least queen size. I have to have feet elevated because of trauma. Dh is over 6ft and 250# and I'm bigger than I want to be. Full/dbl just doesn't work.

We have a king-size and, as omacookie says, it can get small sometimes with DH and the dog! The only double bed I/we have issues with is the one at my father's house. The mattress is about 30-35 years old and toast. There is a sag in the middle that dips to about the center of the earth. You have to grip the edge of the mattress to keep from being swallowed by it or smothered by the other person in bed with you. I simply CAN NOT sleep in that bed and make excuses as to why we can't stay with him when we visit. We were just on vacation and sleeping in a queen which was more than tolerable. Doubles work but I'm very restless and just feel more comfortable with more room sometimes.

I think a double bed is perfect for one person ;)

I thought we were the last couple on earth still sleeping in a double bed.
About 5 years ago we got a convertible bed frame thingie and upsized to a queen.

the point of my post :) and I do have one, is that for 40 years I've been making double quilts.
I solved the problem of them not being long enough to tuck by taking old sheets and ripping them across at about 15" and sewing them on the bottom of the quilts. Easy peasy.

We have a king. When we sleep at my daughter's house it's a queen, and it's too small! In Europe a lot of the hotels only have doubles. So when we went to Italy and France we got twin beds. I think a double bed was fine for us many years ago when I was smaller and my husband didn't need so many pillows for leaning on.

We have a queen...can't fit a king in our mbr. We have full size beds in both our guest rooms.

We have slept in a double bed for 56 years. When we get a king or queen in a hotel, etc. I feel lost and find myself "searching" for my husband in the middle of the night.💏

I like a queen size -- we had a king size and I hated it! It was too darn big and I felt lost in it. They are a pain in the butt to make and the sheets and bedspreads cost an arm and a leg.

For me, size just doesn't matter. As kids, we slept 4 in a double...think sideways! Thought I was in heaven when my sister and I got to share a twin...top and bottom. DH and I have a queen at home, but our cabin only has room for a full, and that works just fine...He's 6'5, and 300+, and I'm 5'10, and much heavier than my drivers license states...don't need a lot of room...we both sleep soundly, and don't move around a lot!

We have had a queen bed for over 35 years - we started out with a full sized bed and then up graded to the queen. We have thought about getting a king but I dislike the weight of the blankets. And it makes no difference the size of the bed because my husband is going to find me. We end up on one side of the bed (mine) no matter if it is twin, double, queen or king. We have been married over 41 years now, and even having kids didn't stop him from finding me in the middle of the night. He claims he has trouble sleeping when I am not there.

We have a king due to the fact it had to be split. DH has sleep apnea and has to sleep with his head elevated and I have to sleep flat it was either this or get separate beds. We opted for this. We both love our bed and so does the princess dog :D. We have to sleep in a double bed when we visit his brother and family. Quite an adventure with us and the dog in that bed that's pushed up against the wall and DH CPAP to contend with. We do because our visit far outweighs the discomfort, but we are really glad to get back to our own bed.

Doesn't matter what size bed we sleep in....hubby likes to snuggle me to death! Lol

We find the Kings in the hotels too big, the double is too small these days (since we are both "fluffier"); queen-size is "just right"! I made a comforter for it that just a wee bit small; Kalama quilt's idea of an extender will be just the ticket to fix that little aggravation!

We only recently got a queen size bed and that is only because our son and daughter-in-law were going from a queen to a king because her parents were moving and had a nearly new king. Son's queen was nearly new so we played musical beds - he got the king, we got the queen and a friend of my daughter's got the double which was still in good condition. I don't like king beds. Too big to make and I feel so alone in them. Double beds are fine for us and we would still have one if it weren't for that musical bed thing that went on.

Double beds are single beds to me. DH and I aren't tiny people and need the extra room to flop around in our sleep. As for the size of the quilt. I have to really watch this. I like a long drop on 3 sides (with shams) and with mattresses getting thicker and thicker, it gets harder to do. I like the drop to cover 1/2 the box spring too. Can you regulate your new quilt to twin size?

Oh gosh. I remember our first double bed. It was very old and sank in the middle. I had to hold onto the side of the mattress every night. I hated to touch someone when it was so hot! I have a King but if by myself, a double would be fine of course. No wonder some couples went to twin beds!!

My 1st husband and I had a double bed....but that was back in 1972. He was 6'4" and 300 lbs. and I was 5'6" and about 100 lbs. My future husband (#3) and I will have a queen....wish it would be a king!! Double beds are good for a single person only!

Shared a double with DH for 48 yrs...now that double is a single......spoon... you miss it when you can't .......

Second marriage for both of us. He had ONLY slept in a double bed, I had slept in double, queen and king beds when I was married to my first husband. When we married I had a double bed and NO pets. We moved out of state and got a queen sized bed and a cat. Now 11 years later we have a queen sized bed 3 dogs and half of the time I have to go to the living room, because they ALL hog the bed. LOL As for your quilt not being the size you want, think about adding another dust ruffle to the bed. I've used up to 3 at a time, I like them in different colors so they pick up the colors in the quilt on top. Good luck

When my husband and I got married in 1962 we slept in an antique 3/4 bed with no problem. We slept on a double bed at the cottage on a screened in porch. Then we got a Queen size and now even sleeping alone, my husband passed away 1 1/2 years ago, I prefer the Queen. I am working on a quilt for my sister who has a double bed and would like a King size Quilt. I am struggling to get it big enough. I would like to get it finished real soon!

Double here--no room for larger.

I actually sleep in an antique double bed. Couldn't fit my queen bed set into the room once I had a walk-in closet built so my sister gave me her old bed set on wood wheels, 4-poster bed, make-up dresser with tilt mirror and bench. Since I sleep alone unless kitty decides to join me it fits the bill. I now have my queen bed set as the spare/guest room. I do find the double bed a little short for me though I'm only 5'5".

We have slept in a double bed for 59 years. Whenever we travel and stay in a motel, they always give us a king size bed, but we always end up in the middle sleeping against each other. My husband says the best way for married couples to sleep is "sleep double in a single bed".

We have a queen but use a king size quilt turned side ways as I don't care for dust ruffles and with the dog pulling the covers down in the middle the king stiłl gives good coverage 😏

My DH is 6' 1", his feet hang off the end of a double bed.

Nope. I can't. I've done it once with my husband. We might be able to do it with just the two of us but considering we always have at least 2 of the three dogs in bed with us (and sometimes all three) a double bed is just too small.

When I was married we had both double and queen size beds at various times. Now I have a double. Since I'm still very large and have 3 medium size beagles, it makes sharing the bed interesting. The dogs generally end up lined up parallel to the width of the bed then backed up to me; If I get there first, I get about 1/3 of the bed; if I'm last, I get to grab for whatever space I can. As for bedcovers, I can't even explain the process except that the bed linens get changed several times per week.
From my perspective get the smallest bed you feel comfortable in. Unless you have a very large bedroom the space saved can be used more effectively. Joyce in Delaware

Have had a double bed for almost 50 years.

We have a teensy bedroom that could hold a queen bed, but we preferred the double. Be happy with your double. Someday it may be too big for you. I found that out. My husband was 6'6-3/4" tall - But,,,,, I am going to start on a quilt that I would like king size so that the sides hang over a ways and also the bedroom is in the northwest corner of the house and in Minnesota it gets pretty darn cold in the winter and I need a quilt over my comforter.

First world problems.

We have slept on a double bed for 52 1/2 years. All that will fit into our bedroom. It has plenty of room for the both of us. Our pets do not sleep with us.

When we bought our house the bedroom downstairs wouldn't handle a king size bed so we went down to a queen. That didn't last long. I moved the bedroom upstairs and got a king size bed. We were snugglers like some couples are. We both like to spread out. Hence why I always kept two separate blankets on the bed, one for him and one for me. When I get cold, I don't care whose blanket it is, I take it. When we split I bought a full size for my downstairs bedroom and used it up until he finally moved out. It was such a comfortable bed and I usually had grandkids or my daughter climbing into my bed with no problems. When he moved out, I bought a great big kind size bed just for me. Of course I still have grandkids climbing in my bed along with my daughter but that's ok. I would never turn down visiting someone I cared about just because of the bed. I've been at my sisters plenty of times during her different rental apts and had to sleep on sofas, the floor, bunk bed. It doesn't matter, I wanted to spend time with her. If I had to I would have gotten a hotel but I always visit the ones I love. I've spent the night at my sons house who lives 10 min from me and slept on his sofa just because we wanted to spend time together or when I came home from surgery and he didn't want me at my house alone. I have lots of aches and pains no matter what but that won't stop me from being with my loved ones.
