Drano/Foil/Plastic Bottle Alert

Drano alert

(I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS)

Kids and others are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in plastic drink bottles and capping it up - leaving it on lawns, in mail boxes, in gardens, on driveways etc. just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the rubbish, but you'll never make it!!!

If the bottle is picked up, and the bottle is shaken even just a little - in about 30 seconds or less it builds up enough gas which then explodes with enough force to remove some of your extremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.

Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.

Pay attention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece of foil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc.

Please ensure that everyone that may not have email access are also informed of this. Check it out at:

YIKES with spring clean up time coming I would pick up a bottle to throw it away !! Thanks for sharing

SuzanneG 02-19-2012 11:59 AM

Thank you so much for sharing this. I looked this up on Snopes and it is indeed true.

DogHouseMom 02-19-2012 12:00 PM

This is true, unfortunatly!!

There are even video's on You-Tube where kids can see exactly how to make one.

Scary stuff. Makes me wonder if Drano (and the like) will be the next 'every day' product that will be kept behind the counter at the super market to be purchased only by adults.

merry 02-19-2012 12:48 PM

Thanks so much. Hadn't heard of this.

annies-best 02-19-2012 12:52 PM

Then they will just get it from under the kitchen sink. If they want to create mischief, they'll find a way!

This has actually been going on for several years in different parts of the country. It seems to go in cycles.

Up North 02-20-2012 10:48 AM

My grandson was actually telling us about this this past weekend, kids do not know how dangerous this could be to them! He is about to turn 13 in 2 days!! He said the internet has all kinds of bomb instructions!

MaryAnnMc 02-20-2012 10:56 AM

Good heavens. I make soap, which involves mixing lye (Drano) and water and I can tell you it gets HOT fast! In a closed bottle, there would most definitely be an explosion. The only thing more dangerous would be a glass jar. I am continually amazed at how far some people will go to hurt someone else just for kicks.

damaquilts 02-20-2012 03:13 PM

I always pick up bottles in the morning while walking my dog in the park. This is something to watch out for for sure.

kathome 02-20-2012 06:27 PM

Oh MY!! What next? Ya know, I really worry about the world my grandchildren will grow up in. Now we can't pick up trash without the threat of an explosion. What next?

Up North 02-20-2012 06:37 PM

This has been common for over 40 years, when I was a kid the neighbor boys made them, not to drop off somewhere but to watch explode now kids throw then out and someone could get hurt.

nstitches4u 02-20-2012 07:51 PM

Thanks for the heads up. Remember the good old days when we didn't have to worry about people trying to blow us up?

ceegee 02-21-2012 06:34 AM

ACAROL

miriam 02-21-2012 10:01 AM

why would you share it - so someone else can make one???

butterflywing 02-21-2012 10:35 AM

that's exactly what i said to my sister when she sent it to me. i said "thanks for the instructions. now share it with the police."

but it's right on youtube and has been for quite a while. when i sent it to my son in new york he had known about it for several years so it's hardly a secret. just watch out before you jiggle any bottles on your lawn or in the streets.

mountain deb 02-21-2012 03:41 PM

Thanks for the info.

purplefiend 02-21-2012 06:46 PM

Wow twisted little brats! I don't understand what drives them to hurt other people like this.

crtwelvecats 02-21-2012 08:26 PM

thank you--- we live on a corner that is well traveled and we get all sorts of people trash thrown in the yard we would of picked the bottle and thrown it away. we will be looking at containerrs differently now. that was difinitly a pass on to all my friends article.

Rose_P 02-22-2012 08:30 PM

Thanks for posting this. I have a good friend, a husband and a daughter who are all especially good citizens who will pick up litter they spot around their neighborhoods. This is very important to know about.

AshleyR 02-23-2012 06:33 AM

Aw, I worry about my poor mutts who love to bring stuff to my yard for us to dispose of (at least, I think that's why they drag trash there!). I'd hate for something to blow up in their face!!

Drano is like acid - drain cleaner, very toxic.

nancia 02-24-2012 12:15 AM

we don't need to be afraid of foreign terrorists. evidently, we're breeding our own! where are the parents? and why are we no longer teaching kids right from wrong and respect for others?

katigirl 02-24-2012 01:17 AM

Sure is a scary thought.

michelehuston 02-24-2012 05:58 AM

Thats what they used!!! The neighbor kids went crazy with these things 2 summers ago and kept throwing them in my backyard...some in the dog pen out back too!! One even landed on my deck! I did file a couple of police reports but never heard anything else about them. These things are NASTY!!! Had a big burn mark on my deck from them. I wondered what they used! If you do see them, absolutely don't pick them up...call and make a police report!!

It's probably not just kids, unfortunately. Thanks for posting, I'll be more careful picking things up now.
