drapery liner
 

I need some expert advise. I'm making drapes for my DS and his finace's rental house they are moving into. The drapes for the master bedroom need to be lined to help make them blackout as the street lights on the parking lot of the business next door shine right into the bedroom. Does anyone know what type of fabric will work for this. I'm pretty much limited to Hobby Lobby and Hancock's in my area.

Roc Lon makes a black out liner fabric. Stores may have to special order it but it is worth it. Hancocks should be able to get it for you. :)

Blackout fabric is a standard fabric in my town, at both the Hancock's and Joann's, no need to special order. Joann's even has different weights. Just call your shops and ask if they have any in stock.

Thanks! I will call them and make sure before I drive over there. Our small town doesn't have anything for fabrics anymore so we have to drive to the next larger town.

I made drapes with a black out liner fabric. It felt very much like a rubberized fabric I've seen used for changing pads. It wasn't very expensive, but it is VERY light proof. I'm very persnickety about light coming into the room in the morning, and this worked GREAT!! I do think RocLon makes it. One thing I realized after I'd done several panels - it doesn't ravel, so if you are not going to see it, you don't even have to hem it , either on the sides or the bottom. When I finally realized this, I just cut to size, and sewed it on. Really sped up the process!

WhenI made black out curtains for my "bestie", I went to goodwill and bought the long premade black out curtains and put a new face on them. Cheap and easy.

That is great advice if you are lucky enough to happen across a pair or two of those at the Good Will. I pass through our Good Will stores on a regular basis and it is very "hit or miss"

Thanks everyone. I tried to actually buy them blackout curtains and we couldn't find any that would go with the color of the rooms. I finally to the future DIL to Hobby Lobby in their town and she found some fabric there she liked. I couldn't find the liner in stock so I told her I would order the fabric, I needed more than what they had in stock anyway. We don't have a Good Will store around here. Closest is 1 1/2 hours away.

Thanks again, I love all the info. I new I was going to the correct place. I checked on Hobby Lobby's website and they have the blackout lining. So I ordered it with the fabric. It should all be here Tuesday. That should give me 2 weeks to get the drapes made for them. We are going up on the 14th to help them move the heavy stuff from the apartment to the house. What away for DH to spend Father's Day weekend. :thumbup:

We just made new curtains and cornice board for master bedroom. The main curtain is a heavy print but the sun shown through. Fancy sheers even tho dark did not help at all. Using a 2 rod system, I went to Kohl's with my 30% off and paid $20 for black out curtains in a complimentary color. They don't show behind the main draw curtain and boy does that block the sun!
