For those of us that find it hard to get to the sewing room...a suggestion. ;)

Dust if you must
but wouldn't it be better
to paint a picture, or write a letter,
bake a cake, or plant a seed;
ponder the difference between want and need.

Dust if you must
but there is not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb!
Music to hear, and books to read,
friends to cherish and life to lead.

Dust if you must
but the world's out there
with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
a flutter of snow, a shower of rain;
this day will not come round again.

Dust if you must
but bear in mind,
old age will come and it's not kind.
And when you go,
and go you must...
You, yourself, will make more dust.

(Remember, a house becomes a home
when you can write "I love you" on the furniture! ;)

Love it!! How true. I'm just glad neither DH or I have dust allergies. One day my then 6 year old grandson was visiting and I "blew" across the coffee table to remove some dust. He looked at me and said: "Grandma that won't work-you need a leaf blower in here!" How embarrassing but true; but I didn't dust that day-we went to the park.

I agree ! Too many people are wrapped up in the "perfect" showplace house. I would rather have a home

By Rose Milligan of Lancaster, Lancashire, England. The poem was first published in the September 15th - 21st edition of The Lady (magazine) in 1998.

The poem is quoted on many web sites, as either an inspirational poem, or in order to reflect the ethos of that site. It is usually attributed to either "Unknown" or "Anon".

I believe in giving credit where credit is due.

Mamagus 04-20-2010 04:56 AM

Can we extend that to laundry and doing floors?

Signed: One totally disgruntled woman who finds housework to be pure drudgery, a time stealer and a total aggravation to my soul!!!

bearisgray 04-20-2010 05:05 AM

Cute poem

Much as I hate to admit it, it really is easier to get things done when the place is somewhat in order and reasonably clean.

LUV2QLT 04-20-2010 05:25 AM

Yep - if it weren't for my allergies, I'd leave dusting to the end - but alas - I have to dust even if I can't see it - my allergies tell me it's lurking on the shelf, on the end table, on the staircasing, on the door ledges ....... it takes away so much time I could be quilting!

chamby 04-20-2010 05:57 AM

This is so cute. I just love this poem.

May in Jersey 04-20-2010 06:12 AM

Nice poem but I've been doing too much of what it advocates so today, DUST I MUST, May in Jersey

JudyG 04-20-2010 06:33 AM

My sentiments exactly. Guess I got in the habit of putting off housework when my kids were small and we had more fun things to do together. Now I'd rather spend time with the grandkids or quilt. Housework will always be there waiting.

Thanks for finding that!!!!! It came to me just as I posted. I agree that when possible, the author should be given due credit.

If dust makes a home then I have a wonderful home. I don't mind vacuuming, moping, laundry, but I hate to dust. I need the leaf blower.

nativetexan 04-20-2010 03:54 PM

I live by that!!!!

That's about how I feel...we are in the country, surrounded by farm fields, on a dirt road, and prevailing winds from the road towards the house. We don't stand a chance!!!!

I liked the comment about the leaf blower...that would work well for me!! LOL

You may admire my dust - but please don't write in it! :-P

I live in AZ and about 20 minutes after I dust it's back, just like magic...LOL

Having lived in AZ all my life I got use to the dust but always had lighter colored wood furniture; when I remarried (I was widowed) my new DH (12 yrs new now...hehehe) came with black furniture!!! Definitely can write in black :D

Gramma Deb 04-21-2010 08:01 PM

That will be my new motto. Love the poem. Live on dust bunnies live on... :-D

mem123 04-22-2010 07:03 PM

I copied this poem on fancy paper a couple of Christmases ago, framed them and gave them to my two best friends as gifts. One is a clean freak and the other is a 'slob' like me. They both loved them. :-D

zz-pd 04-23-2010 11:11 PM

I love it. thank you and God bless. Penny

I have a sign posted near our front entrance "Warning..Quilter lives here"

I dont' find time for quilting....I have to find time for cleaning. LOL

Rainy Day 04-24-2010 04:46 AM

I follow my nans approach to housework if having visitors - dirty dishes in the oven, clean wash in your bedroom, and get the vacuum out so it looks like they have interrupted your house cleaning.

Ohhhhh, I like this. Might embroidery it out and frame it and hang it next to my *clean last week* sign!

littlehud 04-30-2010 07:04 PM

I love that. I think I need to print it and frame it.
