Ear ache temporary relief
I woke up with a painful ear ache last night and on into this morning. I have a slight cold too. I don't know if it is an infection or just from the cold. I remembered my great grandmother's remedy for ear aches that she used on all her kids and my grandmother used on her kids. I tried it this morning and it worked. My ear pain has stopped. I'll go to the Dr. in the morning but on Sunday, no place to go but the ER and I'll be there all day. My grandmother would crack open a peach pit and mash the kernel into a paste. Add a little warm oil or water and put a four or five drops in the ear. She never threw away a peach or apricot pit. Said it was valuable medicine. I always have saved a few of the pits thinking it couldn't hurt but never really used them until today. I'm a believer. It stopped the pain until a Dr can be seen to get it checked.

We always used equal parts Vinegar and rubbing alcohol when the kids were little and got ear aches at night. Soak a cotton ball and place it in the sore ear. It at least got us through the night. Why does it always happen at night and the weekends??? Glad you feel better~

Vinegar and alcohol mixed is great for swimmer's ear. That is what the Dr. told me to use on my kids after every swim. It prevents swimmer's ear too.
I also heard of a clove of garlic in the ear. it's the old medicinal cures that seem to work well. glad you're feeling better. just think for thousands of years, that the medicine used was the ways and it workd. something to be said about them for sure.
I've used garlic oil in the past. It does work well. I've also tried grapefruit essential oil with mixed results.
My mother used little cloth bags of salt. She would heat them in the oven, and then wrap them in a towel. Put it next to my ear, and poof, pain is gone.
Glad you found relief but I keep over the counter polysporin ear and eye drops in the house at all times.
Most people lie relatively flat as they sleep at night, so the 'goo' does not drain as easily as during the day when we're upright. That was what I ws told...it's my story and I'm stickin' to it! :D
I guess a lot of things work...we always used sweet oil. I still keep some handy just in case!
"Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear and see a doctor as soon as possible" is the advice I have always followed. A good practice is also to blow one's nose upon rising and a couple of more times during the day - especially if one is a child prone to infection, one nostril at a time during the process.
Army docs told me when my kids were little to take 2 Tylenol, lie on your side....hurting ear down. Then place a really warm wet washcloth on the good ear. It works.
......a lot of our modern day pharmaceutical come from old natural remedies......aspirin/willow tree bark......and on and on.....I wonder what is in the peach pit that worked to relief the earache.....

I subscribe to a free online health blog called Healthy House. Below are two remedies that are all natural ways to rid ear wax or an ear infection: The first one was in their blog for today.
Mix: 1 part rubbing alcohol 1 part white vinegar Take a teaspoon of the mixture and pour it into the ear by tilting your head to one side. Stay in that position for 1 minute. Afterwards, allow the mixture to run out of the ear by sitting upright. The second one for an ear ache: Crack a walnut and remove the meat. Place a small amount of olive oil in the walnut shell, then heat in the microwave. Allow to cool. Place a few drops of the liquid in the ear. |
I can sure sympathize with you on an earache! Very painful! Had them all my life, the only remedy I've heard of is the alcohol and vinegar. A doctor told me that one, same as swimmers ear sold at stores. He said the alcohol dries up the water, and the vinegar kills bacteria. That's for if you got water in your ears, if they are infected, you need an antibiotic. I can't stand anyone to even touch my ears, don't even like letting a doctor look in them!
I use the vinegar/ rubbing alcohol mixture in my ears once a day. I have really itchy inner ears...lol...I have been to specialist, only that accomplished was over charging my insurance company.
Since I started this daily routine, my ears don't itch hardly at all. |
Ok here's a weird one for you...my mom would blow cigarette smoke into the ear then put cotton in it to hold the smoke in...and it worked. I didn't try this on my kids...
I remember my uncle would blow cigarette smoke in my ear and then close it up with a cotton ball. Can't remember whether it worked or not now but his love and attention always made me feel better. I was born deaf in one ear and it was always that ear that would ache.
Went to Dr. this morning. No infection. Said must be pressure on the ear drum and it will clear out on it's own. Meds won't do anything for the ear but put me to sleep.
I would try decongestant, loosen up whatever is in there. I had pain on the side of my tongue, looked it up online and it said it was referred pain from Eustachian tubes. Decongestant cleared it up.
That is awesome. Thanks for that info...might come in handy someday.
The alcohol dries out the ear and the vinegar kills the bacteria.
Didn't know about the vinegar, but half an eyedropper of alcohol has worked for me.
A warm compress at the ear is my remedy. I hesitate to put any kind of oil in the ear as sometimes they have bacteria and could make things worse. Same with any concoction made with garlic.
I take a decongestant. I take a decongestant right before I ever get on an airplane to minimize pressure also.
Onebyone, I'm glad you don't have an infection.
Like a few other people, my dad blew smoke in my ear. My parents also used warm camphor oil and a cotton ball. Connie |
I remember my mother melting butter and using that in my ears. Today I use Miracle II products and essential oils.

I used to get terrible earaches as a kid. My mom would warm up some oil in a spoon and pour it into my ear and put a cotton ball in to hold it there. It usually would help.

Okay, this made me smile and remember the old saying......so mad, smoke was coming out of his ears....the difference being ...... It was going into your ears.........I think I need another cuppa! |
I remember as a kid my grandmother used sweet oil in my ear. She warmed it up a little & put several drops in. I have never had ear aches that I ever remember except that one time but the sweet oil seemed to work.
Interesting remedy...
My mom always used warm sweet oil on us too. Didn't work on my sister though. She always ended up in ER because of her pain.
My mother always used warmed olive oil on a wad of cotton wool. I hated it and never admitted I still had the ear ache again.
