Did anyone feel the earthquake today. I live in Charleston, WV and work in a highrise building. It shook and scared the crap out of us...it was unbelievable!!

KarenR 08-23-2011 02:24 PM

Earthquake - not in MN

peaceandjoy 08-23-2011 02:24 PM

DD called from Philadelphia, she was a little freaked out. Was home and first noticed glasses and bottles in wine rack rattling (nope, she hadn't been drinking), then things rattling on walls.

A friend was at new teacher training in Arlington - she was really scared. They all got under their desks.

Phew, we are not used to these things on the east coast!

LoriEl 08-23-2011 02:26 PM

It woke me up from a nap here in NJ.

blueangel 08-23-2011 02:29 PM

Lots of areas felt it.

nyelphaba 08-23-2011 02:29 PM

Got it here on Long Island. My whole house was shaking.

craftybear 08-23-2011 02:30 PM

I didn't feel anything in Indiana but on our news tonight others around the state felt it

DebsShelties 08-23-2011 02:33 PM

They are now saying from Maine to Atlanta Georgia.

frarose 08-23-2011 02:37 PM

Not felt in the Midwest.

jljack 08-23-2011 02:58 PM

It was in Virginia, magnitude 5.8

goosepoint 08-23-2011 02:58 PM

Here in Southern VA we were rocked. Daughter has a grandfather clock that she can't get to work. She was napping and awoke to it chiming like crazy. Dogs running through the house barking and dishes rattling. She says she is coming to my house to stay tonight. :o) I think the center may have been around Charlottsville VA. Richmond got hit too. No deaths so far but a lot of bad nerves. The VA hospital in Salem / Roanoke VA has some damage to the frt door according to the news. My office in Collinsville, VA now has 3 cracks in the 10 x 60 front concrete porch :o( Still we all should hit our knees and thank the Lord that we were not like some of the quakes we hear about on the news. I pray everyday that we stay in God's favor. As a matter of fact - I think we all should plan on a mass private prayer at 9 pm tonight and give thanks :o) Know that I will say my prayer at that time. Where 2 or more gather there HE shall be also. Now exactly the right wording but everyone gets the idea. Wouldn't it be great to feel the power of PRAYER at 9PM tonight?

It hit here in Ilion NY about 2:00. It was really wierd. I sat at my desk going over some paperwork with a fellow employee and thought he was shaking my desk being funny. I'm looking at him and his chair is wiggling but he's not doing anything! We are both looking at each other like we are nuts! :) We both jumped up out of our haunted chairs and then everyone in the cubicles started saying..."WHAT was that?... Did you FEEL that? .... was that an earthquake?" It did go on for a good 20-30 seconds!! that doesnt sound like long but it is when your world is rockin!

AFQSinc 08-23-2011 03:43 PM

I was, funnily enough, or not, in my LQS when they felt it here on Long Island. A Verizon repair man came running into the shop asking, "Did you feel that? Did you feel that?". He was up on the pole at the time. Some of the ladies working in the shop felt it.

I did not feel a thing. I will say, though, that I am from Southern California so I think I might be a bit desensitized to the feeling. It can be a very scary feeling for those that have not felt an earthquake before.

QuiltingJaguar 08-23-2011 03:45 PM

Not felt in FL we are watching Irene the cute Hurricane!!

QuiltingGrannie 08-23-2011 03:49 PM

Some in our area felt it, but I was at work and didn't feel a thing. Had just come inside from walking over my lunch break.

(I'm in northeastern TN)

NauDeeGal 08-23-2011 03:57 PM

I did not feel it myself. But coworkers said that they did. It was mild tremors in Detroit, MI.

Still trying to get a reaction from my kinfolks in Milton, just a few miles away from you. Never remembered having one there when I was growing up there during the depression and WW2..we sure didn't need any more misery then.

Friends who lived in Missouri tell of their historic one in the 1800s, the New Madrid one, which, on reading about it on the Internet, makes my blood chill!

Just be careful, and do as Flylady suggests, have emergency stuff ready to grab as you rush out the door!!! There are usually some aftershocks to earthquakes.

MISHNJIM 08-23-2011 04:03 PM

Yes, I felt it in NC...I was checking in a patient and heard my co-worker's window rattling and was wondering why the patient in front of her window was doing that. Then I realized that the floor and my chair were shaking. I then asked the patient if he can feel that and his wife in the lobby said "yes", it's shaking the chairs out here. I'm use to earthquakes from living in CA but not from NC...LOL Pretty Weird.

People around here thought it was Ft Bragg doing their bombing practice's that they do all the time, because it does shake our walls.

gal288 08-23-2011 04:11 PM

Live 50 miles outside of NYC, wasn't sure what I was feeling. There seemed to be a quick rumble, thought there had been an explosion close by, then my phone rang, kids calling to see if we were alright.

My son was in a all glass building about 10 miles outside of the city, all fire alarms went off, water spraying everywhere, windows breaking, everyone running to the stairs not knowing what was happening.

The sad part of all of this is that the first thought that went into eveyone's head was 9/11 all over again.

So we all live in fear of another terrorist attack, everyday, in the back of our minds. Makes me very sad to think that they have won in some way.

Kooklabell 08-23-2011 04:12 PM

My husband felt it at work Middletown. I'm 2 miles away and I didn't feel anything. How strange this is!

Ginny B 08-23-2011 04:22 PM

Sure did feel it here on L.I. At first I thought it was a big truck going by our building but as I looked towards the window and noticed the vertical blinds swaying and my chair was shaking as well as my monitor on the desk and my co-workers chair also (she was at lunch) I knew it was an earthquake. I lived in CA for quite some time so I knew after the first couple of seconds. They evacuated the building just to make sure all was ok. Some people were a little freaked out. Now we have to watch and see if hurricane Irene is going to pay us a visit over the weekend. Guess I'll get my "go" pack ready to go -- which will include my new-to-me featherweight which arrived today. :)

BeckyL 08-23-2011 04:24 PM

We absolutely felt it in Franklin County, VA. Whew, quite the ride. We had one about 8 years ago here, but not as strong as the one today. I felt an aftershock just a little while ago.

dltaylor 08-23-2011 04:58 PM

I'm with ya!!

Western Mountain Maryland felt it & Keyser, WV also.

dltaylor 08-23-2011 05:04 PM

Well ladies I look at it this way. God is telling everyone...HE IS STILL IN CONTROL!! Things are happening in places that no one would believe. As goosepoint stated: I pray everyday that we stay in his favor.

susanwilley 08-23-2011 05:04 PM

I was at work in Downtown Balto. It was freaky! Never felt anything like. Scared the crap outa me and everyone else. The building sits next to a 17 floor building and both were evacuated.

wanda lou 08-23-2011 05:58 PM

It was felt here in Ohio.

aorlflood 08-23-2011 06:29 PM

I'm in north central WV and this house was rockin! Having lived in southern CA for 20 years, I immediately knew what it was! LOL

hannajo 08-23-2011 07:02 PM

I really felt it here in Brooklyn. I work as a nanny on the second floor of an old apartment building. Both babies were sleeping, so all was VERY QUIET AND STILL. When it started, I thought there must be men working on the building, but it didn't stop. (Earthquakes and terrorism were really not in my mind.) I could feel and see our building swaying from side to side. It was the same feeling as standing on a moving subway. Mom was with the infant, so I went in to check on the toddler, in case I needed to take her and leave. The shaking actually woke her up. It must have lasted about 10 seconds. It was the same feeling as standing on a moving subway. People began to gather in the street, and it became almost impossible to get cell phone calls through. It didn't seem like they were panicking, but I suppose here in NYC, people have become extra vigilant about perceived danger. Even after it stopped, I couldn't help but to start to make an emergency evacuation plan.

We've all heard the question, "if you have to leave your house and can only grab one item, what would it be?" Now I know what my item would be - shoes. For some reason, I began planning how I was going to run down the steps carrying a toddler and shoes for 3 of us. It was very disturbing for me, since I've never felt an earthquake before. I felt lightheaded and a little nauseous for about an hour after.

So I was shaken - both literally and emotionally! It turned out fine for us, though. And I hope the best for those closest to the epicenter.

tellabella 08-23-2011 08:44 PM

That sounds frightening...I just heard on the news that it was felt even here,,,in Toronto...

Carron 08-23-2011 10:20 PM

Living in So. Calif. a jolt (earth quake) is just part of a days event. I will admit that some of them can be really scary! I think it is the fact that a person can't see what is happening, just feel and hear it.

Psychomomquilter 08-24-2011 05:20 AM

NC felt it, now a hurricane upon us.

Stitcher317 08-24-2011 06:00 AM

I am in NE PA in the mountains and my coffee cup starting moving along with my computer monitor! Thought I was dizzy and about to have a stroke!

JANICE E. 08-24-2011 06:47 AM

milikaa1 08-24-2011 06:43 PM

My dad was sitting in his truck in Charleston (WV) and felt it move around, he said earthquake was his first thought but was not sure, kind of odd to get them back there.

Pam Perry 08-24-2011 07:11 PM

My Sister did and she lives in Va. She said her Fridge was shaking and the floor. She thought that her hubby was doing something outside. We were on the road when it happened.
