I thought I just felt a pretty strong earthquake here in southern ALabama, about 1/2 hour ago? Any one else?
|
are you okay?
here is the list of earthquakes updated and shows one just hit Florida http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...quakes_all.php |
Scary !!!! Not in Michigan but I don't know if I would notice anyway...I have no idea what an earthquake is like :-)
|
It was worse than the ones I have felt in VT, we have sonic booms down here but I don't think it was one of those. Whole building was shaking for 10-15 seconds, I am OK, thanks.
Just looked it up on the website- it is due south of us. |
Wow!
|
That's a cook link, I didn't realize how many earthquakes there are everyday!
|
If you live near Gulf Shores, there was a 3.5 according to the USGS website.
|
Arkansas has been having earthquakes, you might feel some effects from that.

Last year we had a minor earthquake here in upstate NY. The whole house shook and my hubby hollered out to me, innocently sitting in my sewing room, "Honey, what are your doing up there?" And I was up there wondering what in the world he was doing downstairs that caused the whole house to jiggle. I finally had to call the local library to ask if we ever had earthquakes in this area...and we did!
|
We don't have many in Illinois either but we've had a few minor ones. One a year or so ago woke us up in the middle of the night. It really rattled things for a few minutes. They say that you can feel them more if you're barefooted and also if your house has a basement. I know I felt aftershocks for days after that that little one happened here.
According to that link from Crafty there's been a BUNCH of small ones that last few days in Arkansas too. It was listed 26-28 times. My cousin that lives in Huntington Beach, Ca. says that you're supposed to get into a doorway. I'm not sure why. |

I heard a lecture once from a guy who goes into new earthquake areas to dig out the bodies. He said that crap about hiding UNDER a desk or large piece of furniture was a darn good way to be squashed to your bones. That the best thing was to fall BETWEEN desks or large furniture, so they will hold up the roof when it falls.
And as for the door way, he didn't think much of that either. As for midwest earthquakes, Google Madrid Earthquake. I did a talk on it once for my woman's club and it really was a horrible one. I now live in CA, and can quite easily remember the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. DH and I were watching THE ball game in SF and the announcer cheerfully announced that the fans were really making the place rock and roll, and then in the background someone screamed "Holy @$%^ it's an EARTHQUAKE" and the fans all ran into the playing field. Sheer madness. The hanging lamp in the front room started swaying, our dog got up and started trying to climb into my lap (a Doberman) and the spa water we were heating was sloshing over the rim. We felt it almost 150 or so miles away. We were lucky to be taping it, and I still watch it every year or so. A terrible time. New Madrid Region - Historic Earthquakes New Madrid earthquake of 1811, the strongest series of earthquakes ever felt in America rocked the Mississippi Valley. Devastation was widespread. www.essortment.com/new-madrid-earthquake-1811-60985.h... - Simila |
scary i say

I remember an Illinois earthquake while a student at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in the 1960's.
|
I read on yahoo that arkansas has had over 50 in the last week and over 700 in the last 6 months. Most under 3.1 but that seems to be a lot in that region. I never realized just how effected the southeast is by earthquakes.
|
It's amazing how many earthquakes we have in Oklahoma. Here you think of tornado's, not earthquakes, but we seem to have alot. Luckily I have never felt one.
|
Because of the New Madrid fault here in the midwest, this area has @4 tremors a week! We don't feel them cause they are usualy under a 2.
That whole fault line is scary. Yes, thats the fault that the 1811=1812 quake left. |
Ten years ago I found out our homeowners will not cover earthquake damage and I threw a fit to have it. Our insurance agent and DH thought I was nuts but DH said if she wants it just write us a policy. Now small earthquakes are coming frequently and it wouldn't surprise me if one soon won't shift the ground enough to have the house settle too much. A good felt that one and we're of here!
