Wish I could help with your quest. I am just going to hold out till one comes my way that I can't pass on.

I just bought a pre-owned BabyLock Gold Ellisimo (got a very good deal) and I love it!!!! I had a Viking Designer Topaz and couldn't stand the noise from both the machine itself or the embroidery arm. I haven't tried using the embroidery part yet but I will as soon as I get to know the machine with all of its gadgets and things. Good luck on your search.

I have 2 brother mid-level (in price) combo sewing/embroidery machines.
Have been very pleased with both my machines. |
Check out the new Janome 500 E. It has a large hoop. It just came out this week lots of people are really bragging on it. With it being a Janome, I'm sure that it is reasonable in price.

Make a list of your must haves and go to a larger quilt show and see ALL the models that are available. It is a lot of fun and you can kind of get a feel of what will work for you.
|
Make sure it comes with a large enough hoop size for the projects you want to do. I would like to sew larger projects but my present hoop size won't accommodate them.

Baby locks are very user friendly and do a great job.

I bought the Brother PE700II from Overstock.com. I really like the machine and have had no problems with it, but I wish I had spent another few dollars and gotten the PE770 instead. The more expensive machine has the capability to transfer designs directly from a USB stick to the machine. On the less expensive machine, you can't transfer directly from the stick and need to hook up your computer. Both machines can use up to a 5"x7" hoop.
The PE770 happens to be a Daily Deal today for under $600. |
I really like my Viking Topaz -it takes a loop larger than the 5 x 7, think it is 7 by 10 (don't have it out so can't say for sure) but it come with the USB stick, and a very minor computer program, so will need to buy a better one. I really recommend you go to a couple dealers and sit down and try a few different machines and brands.
