Has anyone used craft felt sheets to embroider on? I have a project I want to do that needs a thicker (not necessarily heavier) type of material and I was thinking about using felt like you find at the craft stores.
Did it work? Were there any problems to work around? Thanks! Mona |
I have never tried this, so I can't assure you that it will work. I wouldn't use a dense design, nor would I hoop the felt. I would hoop the stabilizer and use temporary adhesive spray (Sulky KK2000), or the basting function to adhere the felt to the stabilizer. I would also use a topper to keep the stitches from sinking into the felt.
You can successfully embroider on fleece. As for the felt, all you can do is give it a try. If you do, let us know how it worked, okay? |
I have seen felt used as accents/appliques in embroidery pieces, but I have not seen it used as the sole embroidery foundation. I do know that it tends to fuzz up pretty easily as the floss pulls through so it needs some care in the stitching.

You can use it just fine. Just make sure you hoop and stabilize correctly.

Some years ago I cut out circles of felt and sewed them onto two boys sweatshirts for my two boys Christmas gifts. I embroidered animal shapes on each one, probably with three strands of embroidery floss and whipstitched around the circle's edges. I remember washing them in the washing machine many times and they held up very well. I don't know what kind of felt it was, but it must have been polyester, the way that it held up. I did not do anything special as far as backing on the felt.

Felt embroideries beautifully. I use felt squares when I want to try out a design. It is easier to embroidery on than most fabrics.

I've used felt to machine embroider some bookmarks. It turned out great.

There are different grades of felt. I don't know that I would use craft felt, but there is some nice felt in the fabric store that would work nicely :D:D:D
