ereaders and free books

my daughter taught me to use a program, CLEVENET, TO rent or borrow books from the library using my existing library card. I love it since my finances don't allow me to purchase a lot. Just wanted to let you in on this helpful hint if you don't already use it.

MaryMo 02-11-2014 10:06 AM

good for you! You'll find lots of resources at the library and so easy to check out.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-11-2014 10:10 AM

also try Book Bub. It has lists of free books every day. You can also go to the site for whatever reader you have and type in "free mysteries" or whatever and find many. Don't forget you can use the free calibre software to convert a book from one form to another. For example, if you have a Nook and find a free Kindle book you want, the calibre software will allow you to convert it to a readable form. I seldom ever pay for a book these days.

Our library uses a program called overdrive. Free and of course free books.

tesspug 02-11-2014 10:30 AM

I get an email from Pixels of Ink. some are free, most are $1 to $3.

decky 02-11-2014 05:28 PM

If you have a kindle you can go on amazon and get free books. I get books from there and from bookblast. Bookblast sends me an email everyday with free books that I can chose from.

I'll have to try Book Bub. Bookblast did not have much that I was interested in at the time. My library also uses Overdrive. Once I had the little techie at the library get me going, it was fine. My only issue is the books disappear after 2 wks and I don't necessarily get things read that quickly. Thanks for another site to check!

ptquilts 02-12-2014 05:19 AM

Also the Gutenberg Project for older free ebooks. They have over 40,000 titles, all free.

quilt1950 02-12-2014 05:45 AM

I can turn WIFI off on my Kindle (it's called airplane mode). Then the books don't disappear until I turn the WIFI back on. Of course, I can't load anything new to my Kindle in that time, but it does allow me to get through a long book.

that's because you are borrowing from the library and they only have a certain amount of "digital" issues but on a kindle you are either purchasing or downloading a free book. Not borrowing. Our library has a way to increase the loan period on digital books - not forever, but maybe another week

Also, there is a Kindle app for the iPhone and iPad, which I use sometimes too, and those books stay forever til I take them off.

Onebyone 02-12-2014 08:42 AM

I use Pixle of Ink. Every so often a best seller will be free for a day. I get an email every day of the books that are free or discounted.

Retiredandquilting 02-13-2014 04:06 AM

I use Book Bub for my Nook needs - lots of free and 99 cent books.

Hey, Decky in Minnesota - I do have a Kindle FIre. How about free audiobooks without having to join a club? I love listening to books while I sew. I have a request in at the library for two of Jennifer Chiaverini's new books (audio), "The Spymistress" and "Mrs Lincoln's Rival". Waiting list, wouldn't you know.

I will check Bookblast. Thanks for the info.

My library has two programs, one is called MelCat, I can rent paper books from any library in my State, They also have Overdrive for ebooks.
They just got something called hoopla, for digital movies and books on tape. Free! Check it out.
I suggest seeing if your library is a member of hoopla https://www.hoopladigital.com/home;j...6F1EAABD538823

KyKaren1949 02-13-2014 05:43 AM

I receive notifications through multiple services for free and reduced price books for my Kindle. Pixel of Ink, Inspired Reads, BookBub, Ebook Lovers, Book Gorilla.com, OneHundredFreeBooks, etc.

My library system also uses overdrive and I use it to download free audio books all the time. The only drawback is there is a 21 day time limit and I haven't figured out a way to renew. Usually isn't a problem but every now and then .... :(

ntroxel 02-13-2014 05:55 AM

I also use Overdrive. Love borrowing the books and so easy to use.

cherrio 02-13-2014 06:01 AM

cherrio 02-13-2014 06:02 AM

Thanks you for this tip. I am a tablet newbie and wondered where my books keep disappearing to. Hate to keep bugging my poor DD.

CAS49OR 02-13-2014 11:05 AM

Bookbub IS great! You can subscribe and select what type of books you are interested in and they will email you a list of free and other books every day! It lets you download them from several places. I use a Kindle reader app on my tablet so I usually go to Amazon Kindle to get the free book. It stays on your device until you delete it, then stays in your Kindle library until you delete it.

I also use Overdrive to get books from the library, but I quit when I found all the great books available for free that don't expire in two weeks.

I too borrow kindle books from my library on overdrive. If I turn my wi-fi off the book does not disappear in the allowed two weeks. As long as I keep my wi-fi off my book stays on my kindle forever. It allows me time to read long library books.

I love Pixelofink and get lots of books from there.

I did not know about Book Bub - will have to try it.

Slow2Sew 02-13-2014 07:17 PM

I get daily emails with lots of free book downloads from: www.pixelofink.com and also www.inspiredreads.com. www.diningdownloads has recipes and cookbooks. The books that aren't free are usually $2.99 or less. You have to "buy" the books, even if there is no charge for it. I'm not sure how many books a Kindle will hold, but I'm up to about 875 now.

Jannie 02-13-2014 07:17 PM

I need to try some of these sites, because I find our local library limited on what books they have for the Kindle.

lgmeri 02-14-2014 11:14 AM

check out freebookspot.com. books in all categories

margiepc 02-15-2014 08:58 AM

I have overdrive also, but I use it for audio books. I can program it to have the books due for I think a month. The only problem with that is that you can only have 6 books out at one time. Once you finish one it will not go off your list until the month is up. I'm not sure if this applies to regular books or not.
