I have a friend who is into quilling. I'm not really sure what it is, but she told me she uses paper and can twist it into other things like earrings, other jewelry and wall hangings. The supplies are expensive and she is looking for supplies. I thought if anyone would know about it, it would be someone on this board.

I have heard of it. I've seen beautiful cards made with it. Think of paper that is one matchstick wide, in different colors, but maybe 6-12" length. Then you use tools to crimp, fold, curl, etc.

I had this dream once that I would make cards with quilling...and then I had to tell myself no, no new crafts. :D

Sounds way too intensive for me. :)

my mother used to do quilling. the items she made were cute, but she didn't stick with it very long.

Yes, I have heard of it and seen some nice designs made from it. I think it is more artwork than practical? I would think that now that we have rotary cutters and ruler/mats that you could make your own supplies?

Yes, quilling is a paper art. I've seen some beautiful pieces but its too tedious for me. Im sure those that do it though find it as relaxing as I find my fabric art :-)

Beautiful but time consuming.

It's the art of curling paper. Long time ago I use to teach a class on it. Haven't done it in ages, I am sure that I have forgotten most of the things I knew. It takes a lot of time. BrendaK

I thought it was fairly simple to do. Just thin strips of paper wound around a quilling needle or a toothpick. You glue when you get to the end and squeeze it to get different shapes. Really a no brainer for the simple designs. Actually still have some of the paper left from many years ago.

Heard of it, seen it, not "into" it.

I did some quilling. Used the hand shredder for fast cutting strips.

I did quilling years ago. It was a cheap hobby, as hobbies go. I didn't have much success as I had little ones at home at the time and they tended to get into everything!

Gosh - quilling - that sure brings back memories. Did it yeeeeeears ago. Very pretty but not too useful,at least for me.

virtualbernie 07-22-2011 02:45 PM

What supplies is she using that is expensive?

blossom808 07-22-2011 02:46 PM

Yes I have done it.. Its fun. Great for cards and scrappbooking. Try it.. Your love it.. lol

mom-6 07-22-2011 04:02 PM

It's like most paper crafts, if you get into the specialty papers designed just for that craft it can be quite pricey to get a variety.
As someone else mentioned, you could use a paper shredder to do the cutting for you, but most times the shreds would be wider than is usually used.

I do quilling....I've even done little quilt blocks. If you do a google search for quilling papers you will get a ton of sites...here's one.

There are also a bunch of free patterns out there too.

The supplies are actually very inexpensive and you don't need a ton of tools.....
