Facebook is worse than a peeping Tom

I found this really creepy, I don't even have an account. Although I do sometimes click a link that takes me to a Facebook page I leave immediately, Facebook isn't appealing to me at all.

cashs_mom 03-01-2018 04:07 PM

That Is creepy! I remember why I don't have a FB account, but geez, they can even track you if don't. That's pretty invasive but I guess if you grease the right palms everyone looks the other way.

ptquilts 03-01-2018 05:46 PM

If you read the whole article, they are keeping track of what you do on Facebook, not on the whole web. But rest assured, every website you visit uses cookies to track you. And remember, when something on the internet is free, You are the product that is being sold.

I really dislike social media...for many reasons. One in particular...I treat children in therapy who are so socially retarded due to social media fixation. They literally have no idea how to converse and interact socially. So sad. Plus, I prefer just picking up the phone or writing a letter. Old-fashioned letter writing has gone by the wayside. The other day, as I was sorting a trunk in preparation of moving this year, I discovered hand-written letters from grandparents and from my father written so long ago. These are precious! The things people post on social media are forgotten within an hour.

cathyvv 03-01-2018 08:17 PM

Facebook is not alone. So does your internet provider.

Kassaundra 03-01-2018 08:21 PM

The Daily Mail isn't a reliable source it is the Brittian's equivalent to our National Enquirer.

cashs_mom 03-01-2018 08:34 PM

Sadly, in this case the Mail is probably pretty accurate. There have been problems like this before with Fakebook.

quilterpurpledog 03-02-2018 04:44 AM

Try Amazon for this 'problem'. Sometime ago someone on this board referenced head lamps that had magnifiers. She said it was a helpful device for her quilting and added a link to Amazon. I clicked the link and looked at the device. The very next day ads for that device and similar ones popped up on my Kindle Fire every time I opened it. Coincidence? Don't think so! I am not sure what I think of all this intrusion; I don't like it, but, shopping the old fashioned was has become increasingly difficult.

luvstoquilt 03-02-2018 05:19 AM

I agree Teen. It has ruined their spelling too! I still love a letter and a phone call..texting isn't my favorite thing. I want to hear that voice!

This happens to me all the time too, no matter what I was looking at on Amazon.

In the Mail article it mentions FB can tell if a user is planning to move, etc. I don't have FB. But the other week I was on the Penseke moving website, just browsing at what options of rental trucks they have for moving. For at least a week I got Penseke moving ads. Its not just FB. Everyone does it.

Re: addiction. I heard on the news that in Korea they actually have residential places where children stay to be treated for this social media addictoion syndrome.....that is scary, but I see it in the younger members of my family too. Bad grammar, shortcut words when texting, and face to face conversation almost always will contain a referral to some information from somewhere on social media site....may not be correct, but they swear by it!

Annie68 03-02-2018 06:39 AM

There is no privacy in the digital age, we are being followed everywhere, every day! You don't even have to get on the internet, look at all the stolen info and breaches from credit history, credit cards, bank accounts, etc, etc.

ljptexas 03-02-2018 07:17 AM

I'm with above. Phone calls are "no more".

Onebyone 03-02-2018 07:17 AM

I use Facebook for quilting, nothing else. I don't have the facebook page with my real info at all listed. I use a free email, list as living in another state, where I grew up, false birthday, etc. If your name has ever been printed in a obituary then that is all anyone needs to know to find out who you are. Nothing you can do about it.

Stitchnripper 03-02-2018 09:35 AM

The best was to stay protected is to stay off the grid. I'm not so I do my best to be alert.

Suz 03-02-2018 09:35 AM

On Pinterest yesterday, there was a dress with pattern number listed that is of interest to me. I went to JoAnn's and searched for it and looked at other dress patterns. The exact patterns I looked at yesterday are listed at the very top of this page today.

Also, I do not respond to any of the surveys that will get you a free dinner or something else for free. Early on, I deliberately changed my middle initial which later resulted in many many emails which proved that my information was sold. Not anymore. I just toss the survey request.

When the kids and grands are here, we have a rule that no one can be on their phone/Ipad/tablet/ when we are having dinner, or gathered talking/opening gifts etc. Met with resistance at times, but they survive!!

Wise idea! My DH and I have decided no more YouTube during dinner. We don't want our children to grow up needing constant entertainment.

i don't shop amazon, ebay ..am not a member or visitor of fb, don't patronize any google sites ..but when i shop for yarn on net i am getting ads for fave yarn site on every other site i visit. read the full article that was linked here. and please understand it's not just fb. it's google, facebook, yahoo any of them that do online advertising ...and they all do! it's how they support their business activities in the net. it's part of the takeover attemps in years past of yahoo by google etcetcetc. it's been going on for years and years. the sites themselves have access, as noted in the daily mail article, to your isp number and any other info that you allow by allowing access to third party cookies. if you deny access to third party cookies, as i do, then you get "warnings" from all the pages you visit re: blocked third party cookies and how you should enable them. i don't. i ignore the the threats and warnings ..so far no access denied, pc or ipad haven't blown up.
the internet is a dangerous and invasive place to wander, shop & play. there are ways to limit access via blocking third party cookies ..but you will still be subject to invasive monitoring by facebook, yahoo, whatever ..especially google! via site access to your isp number ..and there's few ways to block that.

so true ..the Mail is pretty sketchy most of the time as a news source ..and one i personally avoid because of all the other stuff they 'report' on, but this cookies invasiveness has been reported on frequently over the years by reliable news sources, both web & written in hardcopy for at.

I guess with the mail you have to take what they print with a grain of salt. Could be true, could not be true. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day so there is the possibility . . .

The Daily Mail isn't quite as bad as the National Enquirer however, I consider it a boot-rag.

Facebook's business model is based upon selling your data. Nothing is for free.

I don't use facebook, twitter etc. I use private browsing mode, block cookies where possible, clear cookies and history after every session, no log ons or passwords are remembered. I block any tracking and have, at times, used a adblocker. I link nothing to any account. I use along with anti-virus, a programme called Malware Bytes. I use a separate email for ordering on the internet or where I do not want my personal email known. If I was ever inclined to use facebook, I would use a burner phone for the verification process or use throw away provided by a third party site. I don't use online banking. And periodically wipe the laptop etc...

Many of us here do not use our real name and I would assume that is allowed because on the whole we are a pretty respectful group, and long may it continue. I guard my privacy very vigorously - my motto is "Don't tell the man anything".

Bet you can tell I used to work in IT!

ditto to all you wrote! :) i have never ever used my personal info anywhere on the internet. all registrations are under psuedonyms ..i'm not IT or retired from anything related to computers. the son who taught me taught me to be safe, even tho he is now all over the web! lol i can search his name on any search engine (haven't tried google --i don't want to give them open access to my ipad or pc) and the first three pages come up w links to code or software he has written. he banks online, lives online and i'm waiting for him to get hit big time. i just hope he doesn't get hit too hard.

Wow, I am in the minority. I love Facebook and that is where I do most of my socializing with my friends from out of town and where I can voice my opinion to members of my other groups. I have some quilting groups I belong to on there and have purchased things from there. Like anything else, you have to watch what you are doing. To each his/her own.

Exactly! I use FB regularly, but am careful. I don't use my full name, and limit access to my posts. It's one way to stay in frequent contact with extended family and friends. I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know, and don't "like" a ton of pages. As with anything, you have to be careful. HettyB had a great list of things to do to enhance your security, which we regularly do.

A friend of mine has a basket near the dining room door and ALL cell phones go into the basket prior to sitting down to eat.

Onebyone 03-03-2018 07:04 AM

Honestly if you are alive your info is out there. A newborn baby gets a SS number.

bettyC 03-03-2018 06:17 PM

Everything you do on your computer is recorded. Even when you make a mistake and erase it, that is recorded too. It isn't recorded just on your computer. It all goes to a data base that is set up for that. You have no way to prevent that.
It is public knowledge but everybody isn't aware of it.

Jane Quilter 03-03-2018 06:40 PM

I flew to texas to visit my adult daughter. while there, she burst into tears. On facebook, she reads her grandmother (my mother has died). My sister, with whom mom lived, did not want to call me, but she called the other 3 siblings who shared with their millennial children who live on facebook. If not for facebook, (which I am not a member), I never would have known of my mothers death. I called my sister, who agreed it was a bad way to find out, but she was hoping I would not find out until after the funeral. Oops, I found out anyway, and she looks foolish. Thanks Facebook.

carolynjo 03-05-2018 02:30 PM

I am in your camp! I try to keep a low profile also. I do not order on e-mail, etc.

Stitchnripper 03-05-2018 02:43 PM

Anybody on this board is on line and fair game.

vschieve 03-08-2018 03:31 PM

I did the picture of my profile as what you would look like as a Hollywood Star. I knew better but was thinking what the heck. Well, now my spam folder emails have increased 300%. Everything is connected....the dots.

vschieve 03-08-2018 03:35 PM

Was listening to Kim Komando on her regular Sunday radio show one day. She said you have to stay on top of your settings in FB in order to keep the public from seeing your account. She said as soon as you think you have everything checked in Settings the way you want, FB goes and changes things and there go your settings to their defaults until you fix it all again.

ljptexas 03-09-2018 05:54 AM

Here is a sad story! I found out my #1 DGD is having a little one in Sept. Guess what? I found out on FB!! Needless to say, I am pretty upset, dissapointed, peeved!! I'm pretty sure her other Nana was told before me! Isn't that sad?? Invention of internet was a great idea but it have gotten soooooo out of hand. No face to face, no telephone call (seldom do folks answer a call but do respond to texts)!!! I had to vent!!!!

SusieQOH 03-09-2018 06:04 AM

Yeah, I would be upset if I found out such important news as that on FB :(

Stitchnripper 03-09-2018 06:33 AM

I would be too but you can't blame Facebook for that one sadly.

nativetexan 03-10-2018 06:54 AM
