Family Sewing Club

Back in February, I had an idea to propose a sewing club of sorts to my MIL and SILs. Only myself and my MIL had considerable sewing experience, and I thought it would be fun to have the ladies get together and learn some new skills and make some nice things.

So far, it has been a big hit. Our first session was dedicated to learning about sewing machines and everyone made a pair of burrito style pillowcases. The second session was pajama pants. Third was hot pads and a microwave cozy. Our fourth was a sling bag/cross body bag.

We haven't decided what our fifth session will be. Anyone have any ideas? Most of our group are beginners and have only sewn what we have made together, so the projects would have to fit their skill set. The idea of an apron has been brought up as well as a Christmas tree skirt. We won't be diving into quilting just yet if ever. Not everyone is wanting to take on a larger project or just isn't interest in quilting.

The hand towel made with the pot holder to button on the oven handle might be an idea. A sun glasses case for the summer.

A small baby quilt, a sweatshirt jacket, a journal cover...there are a couple of threads about this today.

A draw string bag, small for little things, or larger for an overnight bag.

A pillow bed, using three regular size pillows and sew a seam between each pillow. Fun for kids to lounge on.

Reusable shopping bags.... too big and you can't carry them. Make sure they have a square bottom for ease of loading & unloading.

Baby bibs, burp cloths or small double sided flannel receiving blankets.

One of those quilted items that go under the sewing machine and have the pockets to hold your tools and a small trash pocket. Maybe called Sewing Machine Mats with pockets.

Arm rest cover for a chair with pockets for remote control pockets.

Whew....bet your are glad I quit thinking.

Those cute quilted store boxes. I just love them.

So many good ideas. I really like the fabric storage box idea. I know we also talked about making placemats and a table runner. I also love the sunglasses case idea. I am looking at patterns for all of these things. Thank you for the suggestions :)

Pot holders, placemats, pillow cases, book covers, pin cushions. Have fun.

Maybe make a jewelry pouch. One of those made out of a circle with the pockets inside and a drawstring. I've always wanted to make one but I don't go places where I would carry much jewelry with me.

A composition notebook cover. Everyone can keep the sewing notes they are taking as they learn new things! Check out this post from another board member: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...r-t296828.html
