Father's Day Vs. Mother's Day
It seems to me that the celebration of Father's Day has unofficially become a whole weekend. It also seems that there is much more advertising and general "hoopla" than there is for Mother's Day. Even the radio DJ's are saying today, 'enjoy your Father's Day weekend!'
Why is this? Maybe it isn't the case - perhaps I am just imagining it. |
Well, where I live in NH, everyone pretty much calls it Motorcycle Weekend. :)The father in our house prefers to stay home all weekend to avoid the traffic. At least the local high schools have moved their graduations away from this weekend.

I think it's pretty much the same. Just not as many flowers but maybe a lot more BBQ and I'm all for that. I get my husband things for the grill and chocolate. He quit giving my flowers at my request. I was tired of them dying so I got bushes. They bloom a lot longer and I'm happier.

Both days are not a big deal for us. He did buy me a pot of annuals for outside I cleaned, sewed and made chicken and fluffy dumplings for dinner. I also made an old fashioned chocolate cake with chocolate icing. Everything from scratch I will thaw out some meat for him to grill. Make potato salad and a vegetable. Don't know about dessert.

When I was in restaurant management about 7 years ago, Father's Day consistently beat Mother's Day in sales. Personally, I dislike both holidays feeling they are contrived by marketers to get us to spend money. I've asked my children to not buy anything for me, what I really like is for all of us to spend time together, usually for dinner at my house. The families just left about 30 minutes ago, after our Father's Day get-together.

Every father's day is a weekend for us!
We are in NYC celebrating our son's birthday?(34 on the14th), our anniversary(40th on the 16th) and, yes, father's day! |
My husband calls them Hallmark Holidays. I think Father's Day may get more push because of its proximity to beginning of summer so they can push summer clothes, barb-b-ques, and lawn furniture, etc. The reverse is that they keep Mother's Day "purer". Sorry, we should not have to be reminded to honor our parents.

It would be nice if we could have Memorial Day, Veterans Day, Fathers Day and Mothers Day without the word "Sale" after them.
