Finally!!

I have heard of the "guys selling meat from a freezer in the back of their pickup" and last night they showed up at my house! I had to disappoint them as I don't eat a lot of meat. Not sure I would buy it from a stranger in any case.

I know some people DO buy from them - how about you? any experiences, good or bad? I wonder where they get it, and if it is stolen or out of date.

sewgray 06-23-2012 04:17 AM

I would never buy anything under those circumstances.

What she said!

DogHouseMom 06-23-2012 06:43 AM

No way. Sorry ... but I don't know where it came from, I don't know where it's been, and I don't know how long it's been there. I'll stick with my butcher shop - and I know even that is not 100% guaranteed but I like the odds better.

Mariposa 06-23-2012 06:46 AM

We just had guys at our door two days ago. Selling steaks, etc. from a van. No thanks!!

nativetexan 06-23-2012 06:57 AM

Yuck!!!........................................... .......

MaryMo 06-23-2012 07:00 AM

somebody must buy from them because they keep coming back ... just not me!

Up North 06-23-2012 07:01 AM

Years ago we did buy a box of steaks from one of them. They were the best steaks we ever had. Not sure I would do it anymore with all the crooks out there.

crafty pat 06-23-2012 07:06 AM

I just could not trust meat like that. Sometimes we go to ranchers and buy and have it cut up for our freezer.

luvTooQuilt 06-23-2012 07:18 AM

We buy beef, and pork from local processing businesses we use since hubby hunts deer, elk and what ever tickles his fancy..

joyce blint 06-23-2012 07:40 AM

Yes, I've foolishly bought from them 2x (diff companies). Same disappointment each time. The ph # they say to call, no one answers. Ok...3rd time'll be a charm, I've learned!!!!

piepatch 06-23-2012 07:57 AM

No way I would buy from them!

raptureready 06-23-2012 08:46 AM

They hit our town several times a year. I asked our local police chief about them and he said that HE'D BOUGHT FROM THEM!!!----and that the steaks were really good. However, I've often questioned his taste and his common sense so I've never bought from them and won't in the future.

chips88 06-23-2012 08:59 AM

no way would i buy anything that i do not know where , when, or how

ditto ditto ditto
And talk about a food safety disaster waiting to happen!
NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!

alwayslearning 06-23-2012 12:23 PM

You should probably call the police. They are probably not licensed.

nativetexan 06-23-2012 01:41 PM

I think i had some come by and they were Omaha steaks? weird trying to sell door to door though.

sassey 06-23-2012 07:04 PM

I havent bought from them in years however it is a legitmate business and they are licensed There steaks are great however being on a tight budget I cannot afford to buy from them anymore plus I prefer my meat fresh not frozen I only but enough meat at a time to be able to eat it fresh I have learned that frozen meat just isnt as good as fresh

You'd have to live in a pretty small town to get police dispatched out for such a thing.

ptquilts 06-24-2012 02:58 AM

Actually the town I live in is so small we don't have a police dept.!! There are only 41 towns/cities in Vermont (out of 251) with police depts. The rest are covered by the state police, and they are spread very thin.

jeank 06-24-2012 03:47 AM

We live in a resident owned community in FL that is posted no trespassing & no soliciting. We have called police when these meat sellers come in because they violated both of those. Police came right out.

Yrs ago I also bought steaks from them. Boy they were so good. Don't know if I'd do it again as I worried ahead of time if anyone would get sick or die from eating them.

We had a Lady come out to our house once, selling meat, chicken and seafood. We let her go through her sales pitch, Then she opened a few boxes, the products were vacuum sealed. To display her "wares" she laid the boxes on the ground and spread the contents on the driveway. After she was done, we said no thanks and went back in the house.

She wasn't to pleased and had never come back.....LOL

Sheila_H 06-24-2012 12:05 PM

No way on this end - with the 100 degree heat we have had I wouldn't trust anything coming out of a freezer on a truck. It has to be crooked they know someone at one of the distribution centers & is paying them for a couple of cases cash under the table type thing. You have no way of knowing how or where it was produced, was it processed following the food standards (doubtful).

mumzer 06-24-2012 03:17 PM

You can't be sure where it came from. Check with people who have bought it first. Then if you are still interested and the price is ok just buy something small to try.

Caswews 06-25-2012 05:21 AM

Nopers ...will never buy from them .. BUT I do like the Schwan pies !LOL

Steady Stiching 06-25-2012 06:11 AM

I've never seen a meat truck other than sometimes see locals selling seafood on our way down the NC coast.
Did have a big ol truck in our subidivion once...selling furniture...priced to sell.....most likely stolen merchandise so we passed.

southernmema 06-25-2012 06:34 AM

No way hosea!

Jingle 06-25-2012 07:10 PM

In 25 years of owning a business we have had meat sellers come in wanting us to buy meat. Others selling oranges, art pictures, cleaning products, etc. We are an abrasives distributor, as in sand paper, sanding belts and the such, to the industrial market. We did buy oranges, very good and cleaning solution a couple times. No meat.

Me neither... for any number of reasons... the meat could be stolen, it could be poisoned, it could be who-knows-what kind of meat (like horse or something). I don't even think that's legal.

AshleyR 06-26-2012 02:26 AM

They came to our house last summer. Nobody ever comes to our house. I was getting ready to get in the pool. Well, I wasn't exactly wearing a bathing suit that I'd wear in public... if you know what I mean? It was a string bikini that was about 3 sizes too small!! I was literally crouching behind a retaining wall separating me from the driveway! I was shouting at her: "We don't eat meat!" and she was arguing with me about it, asking if I ate pork or fish or beef?! And her prices were "so low" that I could buy it for my guests!!
Seriously, my family hasn't eaten any meat in years! I don't believe in factory farming and slaughter houses, so I'm not going to buy meat off the truck!!! She was NOT taking the hint! I finally let the dogs out and she went away quick. Perhaps I should have let her see me in my tanning get-up and she would have screamed and drove off!!
