My firmies (packages with books in them, as opposed to squishies that are packages with fabric in them) have arrived. I may be quieter for the next couple of days while I try to digest FIVE books that all came today. This is a new sensation for me....I am now going to delve!

I am glad to hear that they arrived safely into your hands...we shall leave you alone to spend time oooing and awwwing over them

I have just had a quick flick through so far...The two kaleidoscope ones, One Block Wonder and One Block Wonder Encore have loads of inspiration and great fabric suggestions. The two by Sharon Schamber. (Piece by Piece and Piec-lique)..very different. Lots of ideas, great techniques, but not quite as much on the quilting aspect as I had been hoping, though some good photos which are almost as good as. The last, Guide to Machine Quilting, Diane Gaudynski, lots of help with the quilting, so all in all, I am a very happy bunny.

Does anyone else have these books, and if so, what were your reactions, and have you tried out any of the techniques? I know several members have done One Block Wonders, so I hope to join their ranks asap.

I've got OBWs and just had a peek today at a friend's OBW Encore - think it's definitely worth having both! Can't wait to see your first OBW!

I love your name for them. Have fun.

Give me time, I still have several UFO's in the pipeline, but I might have to just try a little one in the meantime.

Yes, I would say it has a great deal of helpful hints for beginners, though I haven't read it all the way through yet.

Glad they got there!! Have fun, I love new books!

I love books. If I had to choose between a book and chocolate, I'd choose a book every time. Even if you can't tell if from the rear!

You have summed it up nicely, but, much as I love cats, can I do without one in this heat please? I'll settle for the addition of a warm cat on my lap in the winter. All the books are lovely, and I have indulged, and just ordered some fabric on sale at Hancocks with a One Block Wonder Kaleidoscope in mind!

Hasn't anyone else had any firmies recently? If so, what did you order?

Ninnie 06-30-2009 10:31 AM

:D :D :D I just got Sylvia's Bridal Sampler
From ELM CREEK QUILTS.
It reminds me of a Dear Jane Quilt and plan on starting one by hand this winter!
:D

That sounds nice Ninnie, I had the idea of doing a Dear Jane by hand a couple of winters ago, and only got as far as about 4 blocks, so I have a way to go!! Lol. I hope you do better than me.

If you have the OBW, then you will like the Encore, it has all the different cube shapes you can insert with the hexagons (kinda stops it being a ONE block quilt though, doesn't it?) I quite like them being added in though, especially when they blend so that you don't notice them right away. I haven't seen any of the stack and whack books - I have to stop buying, I have been greedy this month, but I hope you enjoy your parcel when it arrives.

I LOVE books! Have almost more books than fabric! Just used my gift certificate from tha last shophop for a book rather than fabric!

I'm not sure I would always go that far, but I do love my books, at a rough guess, over 1000, and I got rid of a lot before I moved here! I would hasten to add that they aren't all quilting books, a lot are from other crafts I have done along the way, (or still do). But almost all are non fiction, and craft based. I think I could open a library!

Shemjo 07-01-2009 07:30 AM

Well, let me say I TRIED to use my gift certificate for a book! It wouldn't accept my certificate. I am not amused! That is the main reason I didn't get my heart set on some of the great fabrics I saw. I couldn't decide, so I went with a book I didn't have. :? Will have to wait and see if they honor it or not!

Ninnie 07-01-2009 07:50 AM

I love books, and have a lot! I love to sit and go through them and I always find something new.
Two of my favorites are The American Quilt, by Roderick Kiracofe. It is a history about fabric and quilts, no patterns, but lots of pictures and history and great reading!
The second favorite is the Quilter's resource book by Maggi McCormick Gordon. A great reference book and I have learned a lot from it and go back to it whenever I have a question.

Lacelady 07-01-2009 01:24 PM

They both sound nice Ninnie, when I have some more cash, I will think about possibly ordering them

sandpat 07-02-2009 03:48 AM

I'm thinking about ordering Infinite Feathers by Anita Shackleford...anyone have it...what do you think of it???
