I have 3 indoor cats and still get flea infestations. It's ME bringing them in from outside! So I have to have Animal Reg come in and trap the racoons, possums and skunks that cruise through my yard every night, dropping their fleas as they come to fish in my pond!
Any flea within 100 yards will beat feet to get to me!
And vacuuming every day does help, but unfortunately I don't have time for that

I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO SPRINKLE SALT ON FLOOR IT WILL DRY UP THE EGGS AND THEN VACUME,I HAVE NOT! TRIED THIS MY SELF.THE VET TOLD ME YOU HAVE TO BOMB OR FOG LIKE 3 TIMES IN A WEEK TO GET RID OF ALL EGGS AND FLEAS.WE HAVE TO USE COMFORTIS ON OUR LITTLE DOGS THEY ARE AMMUNED TO FRONT LINE PLUS WE HAVE USED IT SO MUCH.TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAT YOU HAVE USED

grandjan 08-04-2011 05:50 AM

Seems like the heat this summer has made the flea problem worse. We use Frontline but our house backs on a woods and we have to watch our cat pretty diligently to be sure she doesn't bring fleas into the house.

Granny Quilter 08-04-2011 05:51 AM

Move to Wyoming. It gets so cold here that we don't have fleas.

Hosta, my daughter tried every thing (bombing, frontline and such, vacumning) all to no avail. Finally one of the girls in the vets office said, use the frontline on the dog and use RID lice spray on the house and be sure to trea the yard. Well she sprayed the house with the RID and then vacumned and then sprayed it again and she has not had fleas since. The lice spray also kills flies!!

We had them 2 times and use Frontline now. We sprayed the house every 3 weeks 3 times to get all the eggs. They pick out one person in the house to bit. Both times it was my husband. The vet said just another dog walking buy they will jump on your dog. Also said you could get them at the vet office from other dogs. Flea collars don't work. Have never had them since using Frontline.

MaggieLou 08-04-2011 07:46 AM

So far, nothing has worked on my greyhound. Just gave her Comfortis a few days ago and she still has fleas. We've tried Pet Armor, Frontline, Advantage, washed with Dial liquid, bombed the house and still have a problem. Guess I'll try water and dish soap. I've never had this much problem with fleas until now and we used to live in FL.

Sandra in Minnesota 08-04-2011 07:57 AM

We went thru that one year so I know how you feel. After bombing the house twice, we got some spray from the vet, which took care of the problem. Frontline seems to keep them at bay every year now.

BellaBoo 08-04-2011 08:02 AM

We use Sentry pills for the outside dogs. They have to have heartworm protection and the flea meds are in the pill too. All the cats outside, all five of them (we have acres of lawn and yard) get Revolution once a month and a pill. We get a lot of stray cats here. I lure them with food and get them in the carrier and they go to the vets to get fixed and then released. If the cat runs loose around my property it's going to be fixed. The world does not need another litter of helpless kittens.

Bonnie P 08-04-2011 08:02 AM

We had the same problem last year and finally had to get the prescription meds from our vet and they solved the problem in a very short time.

Feather3 08-04-2011 09:18 AM

It's best to kill them where they live....in the ground. I use a yard insect spray that kills fleas & ticks. It comes in a bottle you hook up to the garden hose. My dogs never have fleas.

mdollar 08-04-2011 09:31 AM

If you are in an area where chinaberries grow, you can break off the limb and lay them around your house and under your beds and outside under your house and they will leave. They don't like the odor or something. We did that once a long time ago and never had a problem with the again. Some say that is an old wives tale but it worked for us.

arimuse 08-04-2011 11:09 AM

I use vet for flea pills/liquids too for the cats and dogs. Used raid flea spray all over and got diotomacious (sp) earth to sprinkle around before vacuuming. Had a really bad outbreak one yr - the neighbor was not taking care of a dog they had w/ 1 bad leg and let it sleep in the dirt under their porch - it picked up so many fleas!! My garage was infested. The girl nextdoor and I washed that dog 3 X, it was so bad, I thoughtit was a tan dog, but it was so covered w/ dry blood it looked that way - it was a snow white dog! They let my brother take it out to the farm where he washed it once a week in the warm weather, and made sure it had flea meds all the time! sharet

I use liquid b complex. Just add 1-2 drops in the water bowl each time you fill it. Haven't had a flea in 2 years!!!

Angelmerritt 08-04-2011 12:30 PM

To those of you using a topical such as Frontline with poor results:

Are you bathing your dog right before you apply it to the neck? Perhaps this is the problem! That medication adheres to the oil in the pets skin gland at the base of each hair folicle. When you wash your pet with shampoo, you are striping the oils from the skin. So the medication cannot adhere and ends up evaporating.

So after a bath, consider waiting 3 days before applying Frontline (or other topical flea medication). The only exception is if you are using a "soap-free" or "soapless" shampoo. Some brands that come to mind are Hylyt, BioGroom Natural Oatmeal, and I think Nova Pearls has a variety too.

Also, there are online companies selling knock-off Frontline or expired Frontline for cheap and they just don't seem to work at all. Consider your source.

jeannedog 08-04-2011 12:36 PM

I use REVOLUTION (from the Vet.) that takes care of fleas, heartworm, intestinal worms and ticks. I have one dog that goes in and out of doors. Two cats that do not get treated and stay in the house---they never have fleas.
I have had six dogs and never a flea once had a flea problem once we had this product. Before treating animals and house was a constant fight.

So do I. I keep my cats indoors, still we have fleas, and I bug bombed it too. Did it get rid of them? Nope. I m going to try and bathe the cats, wrap them up in towels, take them out and go somewhere with them while the bug bombs blast the apartment for several hours. See if that works. :? The cats won't like that.

jeannedog 08-04-2011 12:47 PM

my fingers and mind did not work together on my reply. The line should have read:

I have had six dogs, who worked in the fields, and lived in the house, and never a flea once we had this product.

In order to combat the flea, you should know a little about them. The flea life cycle roughly goes like this: Adult flea goes on your pet to EAT ONLY (they don't live on your pet), the adult flea jumps off the pet into your yard (or home) and lays about 1,000 at a time and they hatch in 2-3 weeks. Then you have 1,000 hungry fleas ready to jump on your pet (and/or you) to eat, jump off, lay eggs and that is how they seem to just multiply overnight into a million. So you can either treat the fleas food source (chemicals on your pet such as Advantage/Frontline) or their living environment (spread chemicals in your yard/house).

So shampooing your pet will only get the ones who are currently feasting, which is a tiny fraction compared to the amount in your home and yard. You can use ANY soap/shampoo to kill fleas AS LONG AS YOU KEEP IT SUDSING FOR AT LEAST 5+ minutes. Even tearless puppy/kitten shampoo works. I swear. I was a professional groomer for a dozen years and did animal rescue too.

For outdoor pets: You don't have to call an exterminator if you cannot afford it (besides, you can do the same things yourself). Get some yard and kennel spray or any lawn bug granules (Ortho, Spectracide, Bug-B-Gone, Bayer, etc) and spread in your yard and treat your ENTIRE yard. Repeat in 3 weeks. Then keep up with this every 5-6 weeks (changing your brand/active ingredient each time so they don't become resistant). This will even protect against fleas that hop off your local squirrel, neighbor cat, or other wildlife. If you are lucky enough to have a hard ground freeze in the winter, begin yard treatment 3-4 weeks after the last freeze.

For indoor pets: Get Zodiac brand house foggers (they have an IGR or Insect Growth Regulator. This means that it will (1) kill all adult fleas in your home for 7 months, (2) sterilize any eggs in your home for 7 months, and any larve that hatch into adult fleas will then be killed under statement (1). These foggers come in a 3 pack that cover 2250 sq ft and last for 7 months and cost about $16 (found online or at large pet stores). For major infestations, use one fogger per room of your home. If you have a large area of vinyl or tile in your house, buy some flea dip concentrate or original pine-sol to put in your your mop water and mop your floors with it on a regular basis.

Zodiac has an 800 number that is wonderful for answering questions and they will guarantee satisfaction if you used their products as directed. I've had a few foggers that had a faulty nozzle and they sent me new ones. I finally convinced a friend of mine to use them and when they didn't work she called to complain. Come to find out, she didn't use enough foggers for her house, but they gladly sent her a new box of foggers to do it again. I've used their products for many years (since I learned to professionally groom in the late 80's) and never a problem nor a flea.

PS - I don't use any of those topical flea treatments (Advantage/Frontline) on my pets until we go on vacation (as I am not about to fog hotel rooms).

Also, I can bring home a sick/injured pet loaded with fleas and not worry about bathing them right away. I am confident that those fleas will die within 24 hours of hitting my house as they jump off the rescued pet into my treated house.

Are they messy? Nope. You will not see or smell ANY residue at all. It is a water-based mist and safe enough to let an infant crawl on the carpet just hours after fogging (as per their commercial from 20 years ago).

BTW, I don't work for Zodiac, just a long time satisfied customer!

Lindsey 08-04-2011 01:03 PM

had to have the exterminator come in several times. they set off bombs and then come back in several weeks to do it again due to eggs that have hatched.

meemersmom 08-04-2011 03:27 PM

I lived in Florida for 10 years, and my pets never had fleas. One cat had asthma, so sprays and bombs were out of the question. Vigilence was the key. That and what was "roach" powder --- plain old boric acid. Sprinkled on the carpets, worked in good with a stiff broom, then vacuum up 2 days later. It kills both the fleas and the eggs, but needs to be repeated about every 10 days for about a month and a half. Then, once they're gone, I did the process maybe once every 3 months or so. Worked like a charm.

sgraves1959 08-04-2011 03:57 PM

I just ordered two flea traps from Home Depot that is suppose to work good. Light with a sticky pad on it. They are 12.49 a piece but if they work it will be worth it as they are driving us and babies (dogs) nuts.

cr12cats 08-04-2011 04:08 PM

we use advantage from the vet and also on carpet sprinkle and rub in some baking soda also around the wall where the wall and carpet meet.Borax can be used too. also we used lemon juice as a rinse when they got a bath. the soda burns the fleas and the borax suffocates them and they don't like lemon good luck

crazyquilter56 08-04-2011 04:59 PM

I have two min pins and never had fleas when my breeder told me to put garlic powder on their food not much, fleas don't go on dogs that eat garlic and I also sprinkle team borax laundry detergent on the rug and along baseboards leave for 1 hour in rug then vacuum what is left will kill anything that crawls on carpet including ants spiders etc. push it under baseboards and leave it there for a week put fresh amount every week till you don't see any more it kills eggs too that's where they hide. It's safe for kids and dogs too.I got this tip from Jerry Baker I have ants in the summer and put this in the door way and along baseboards and they go away. This year I put it there before the ants came and haven't had any this year. You can put it on ant hills too but it will kill the grass if left to long. I don't use chemicals on the dogs or in my yard not healthy for you or the dog or your kids. My oldest dog is 11 and my other is 6 so that's my story and I'm sticking to it....check out Jerry Bakers website for tips....

negba 08-04-2011 05:03 PM

the only way we got rid of them was to have an exterminator come in and spray they sprayed inside the house and around the outside had them come every year and no more fleas or ticks

katcox 08-04-2011 05:07 PM

Nothing this year on my cat, last year plain misery, I give her the liquid on back of neck just from walmart, then I bought the spray bottle for flees, I combed my cat every night last year and every flee went into the garbage with a spray on it or them. Got that from my neighbor and with in 2 weeks every thing was clear.
They are nasty to get rid of and I just hate the fleas.

jmanghamom 08-04-2011 05:33 PM

Sevins dust. You can dust animals with it without any ill effects too.

merchjag 08-04-2011 05:33 PM

frontline on the cat -no problems because he never goes outside. Vet said treat him because you bring the fleas in on your clothes and they jump on him. so bombed the house and treated him-no more fleas. Yeah!!!

Katz13203 08-04-2011 05:41 PM

4 years ago I had an indoor only cat who got fleas. The vet said that we must have carried them it. They jump onto anything coming into the home. We stopped walking across the grass to go to the mailbox just in case they jumped back on us.
Each time you vaccumn make sure that you empty it. Take the vaccumn and empty it far away from the house. Also, make sure you give them a good flea bath.
Good luck.

Our living room was infested and we did this. I took about a week and you have to make sure there is no other light on in the room. Believe me - it works! It's a great alternative to chemicals, just make sure your animals are also treated or you'll be leaving the night light on for those darn fleas for a long time...

ree-nee 08-04-2011 05:54 PM

are you using mothballs in your vacuum bag? vacuum everyday and also put the mothballs around your steps outside use a generous amount like a whole box.
a night light with a saucer of water under it will attract them and they will drown
Have you tried skin so soft from avon? it works really well
I used it when we were redoing the inside of a house we purchased. We put it on us but would leave the bottle open while we were away until the next weekend and it did the trick. If I had this problem again I would put it on a rag and hang a rag in every room.

Momsmurf 08-04-2011 06:37 PM

You don't have to have pets to have a flea infestation problem....those little pests hitch rides on "people" clothing and come right into the house .

I'm so glad I got rid of carpets (except for the living room and one bedroom). The rest of the floors are wood...so much cleaner!

quilt crazee 08-04-2011 07:45 PM

treat the dog&yard, until you get it under control! limit where pet can be to limit reexposure! good luck!

RamblingRose 08-04-2011 07:46 PM

the vet told me that the blue Dawn dishwashing liquid was the bet thing to get rid of : flea, ticks,or ear mites that is what I use to shampoo our dogs. have not had a problem.

What is procor? I tried googling it and came up with nothing.

I tried the water bowl with soap and the light last night got five fleas

You can bring in flea eggs on your shoes or clothing and if your cats ingest them they turn into tape worms. We have a tick problem. Have to spray the yard every 10 days for 3 times to get eggs, larva and all. I hate them!!! One of my Pyrenees has just been scratching herself raw. She has scratched all the hair off her belly and left a nice soft warm pallet for ticks to latch on. The other Pyrenees still has thick belly hair and not many ticks. We have treated the yard, the dogs, between treatment sprays, 7-dust. It is getting better. I have her belly pretty much healed up now.
