Floss uses?

I was given about 30 boxes (10 per box)of different colours of embroidery floss. More than I can possibly use in my lifetime. I have thought of Redwork and tying quilts but what else can I use it for? Any ideas?

QuiltnNan 10-23-2013 07:59 AM

it can be used for tying quilts

You could make some tassels for decoration.

I could put tassels on my pointed end table runner. What else?

Crafts for kids.......friendship bracelets

Donate them to a school or senior citizens center.

Chasing Hawk, I was wondering if young girls still liked making the friendship bracelets. Maybe the 4H leader might be interested?

all kinds of embroidery/embellishment. great for sewing on buttons-because it's strong; donate it to school art departments, senior center, scout groups- jewelry, lots of uses. :)

you can use it as regular sewing thread, hand sewing. I would unwind it and let it relax before using it.

Punch needle embroidery.....it uses lots of floss....and fun to do.

Tartan 10-24-2013 08:23 AM

Okay, now I am more determined then ever to find the punch needle tool! I have tried Michaels but they don't have it. Does anyone know of a good source to order it from Canada on the net?

I did counted cross stitch for years, and have hundreds of skeins of floss. I can always find the perfect color of floss that matches my binding; I've been using floss to hand sew the bindings to the back of my quilts quilt for twelve years. I use two strands of floss.

Lucky you, they are terrific for "Big Stitch" quilting, using them, 3 strands, instead of perle cotton http://www.thebluecatcreations.com/bigstitch.php

Ditto what QuiltingaddictUK said. I'm just learning the big stitch with the heavier thread and I love the way it looks.

I use floss and metallic thread for embroidering the greeting cards I make.

wendiq 10-25-2013 06:58 AM

Pull out what you "know" you will use and donate the rest......I prefer the Senior groups.....:)

I was told floss will get brittle with age and use so I wouldn't put it in a quilt that you want to be used and lasting. My mother's embroidery pillowslips, I noticed the stitches breaking. I cut the embroidery designs out and framed them for my granddaughter's bedroom.

Buy panels and embellish them. That seems to be the rage in my neck of the woods.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 10-27-2013 02:09 PM

Take a small butter dish lid and spread Elmer's glue in it pretty heavily.
Give the kids the floss and have them lay it in the glue in pretty patterns. Long pieces, short pieces. Whatever looks good to them.
Leave one good sided loop of floss up and over the edge of your lid.
When they've filled it in mostly with floss, cover it with more glue.
After the glue dries, pop it out of your lid and you have a Christmas ornament.
As long as they don't get wet, they will last for years.

I use it when making yo-yo's. It doesn't break and gives the yo-yo's a nice even stitch. Ellie (aka sewellie)
