Fox in my backyard this morning!

Look what was on my porch this morning while I was doing dishes. A Red Tail fox. He did not even budge when I knocked on the door.

Is rabies in your area? Beautiful animal, but they are typically skittish.

We called animal control but they say they are very prevalent here and unless they are foaming at the mouth they are ok!

Very cool to see such an animal!

nygal 01-29-2013 09:49 AM

He is so pretty. Looks like he wants to take a swim.

nivosum 01-29-2013 10:25 AM

I have a friend that lives near Atlanta who has foxes in her neighborhood. The animal control told her that it was their habitat also. Okay by me. I love to watch wild animals.

Very pretty! I volunteer at a wildlife rehab center and we have a resident fox named Shianne. She's just like a dog. Loves her belly rubbed, ears scratched and fur brushed! And her favorite treat is a hard boiled egg!

What a cute little guy, we see them often in our neighbourhood. We have lake Ontario within a short walk, the huge Rouge Valley very close and a large park across the street, guess there is lots to eat.

Lots of them here in central NJ and PA as well. As you say, as long as they are not foaming...not to worry. By the same token, not sure I'd let my own furbabies out while the fox was in the yard. I was very nervous last year with turkey buzzards and the puppy!

If you have a kitty, don't let it out. It will become Fox-Food!!! Ask me how I know??

I had a pair of red foxes tunnel under my barn and connect their den with the adult woodchucks home on the back side entrance in 2011. Never knew which critter would pop out of the holes. The fat old woodchucks would even push the foxes out of the way. I'd hoped the foxes would encourage the woodchucks to leave, but no such luck. 2 adorable red kits, romping around just like kittens. Kits were fearless, out during the day and hard to keep secret from fearful neighbors. They left gifts of bunnie bits on the deck by the back door. Sadly they didn't come back last year. I've been checking the snow around the den, but no visitors so far.

Send them my way. We have way too many "bunny bits" still intact and thriving, all over the place.

OMG! I do have a cat but she rarely goes out. Thanks for sharing.

We think we might have a fox in our community because most of the rabbits have disappeared. Oh, if that had only happened when we had our basset! When we lived in Coral Gables, Fl, we also had them nest under our deck. What a treat it was to watch those 5 kits grow. Lady across the street left dog food on her front porch (even thought they kept the dog inside), so that was one of the first things they learned to "hunt".

For those of us who raise chickens that is a very scary thing. It is that time of year in many places where their natural food is scarce and they are looking for a meal. Keep your dogs and cats in sight if you let them out. We have seen hawks flying over our chicken run and they are looking for a chance to grab one of my girls. We have our run covered with bird netting so hopefully they won't get a chicken nugget from us!

Oh my - I get excited if I see a rabbit or a deer in my yard. I don't know what I would have done. Great pics.

AuntieD 01-30-2013 05:19 PM

We have one that comes by early in the morning. He is quite handsome. Also a hawk or some or big bird is in the area and flys by. I love the deer and other wildlife we have who come visit.

marla 01-30-2013 05:38 PM

maybe there is a way to discourage him from coming around. It would make me nervous to own any animals w/ this around.

moonwork42029 01-30-2013 05:47 PM

So beautiful.

JoyjoyMarie 01-31-2013 05:03 AM

How very cool! We had a fox in the neighborhood that we would spot occasionally, but haven't seen him/her for a couple years now. I just loved it when I'd catch a glimpse of her!

sunnymom 01-31-2013 07:35 AM

He is beautiful! While running a few months ago I saw a red tail fox too! He was not shy. I was surprised to see him as we live in San Diego in a neighborhood. It made my day! Thanks for posting your "friend."

Country1 01-31-2013 08:22 AM

Oh, he was just out taking a morning stroll around the pool. We have foxes around here also. We had a family of red foxes for a while, 1 used to come up to the barn and watch my Dad feed the horses in the evening. He never bothered anything just was curious about what was happening.

Anniedeb 02-01-2013 11:07 PM

So Pretty! We live across the street from a creek/watershed area, and get to glimpse a lot of wildlife. We see deer almost daily, and turkeys routinely visit the bird feeder. The fox comes by ocassionally, but usually suns himself in my neighbors front yard. I guess we've really encroached on their territory, haven't we?!?

owlvamp 02-01-2013 11:14 PM

Very pretty fox. I love seeing them. I just seen a red fox. They are very pretty.

earthwalker 02-01-2013 11:20 PM

Beautiful creature. Here they are an introduced species and declared vermin....along with bunnies, feral pigs and feral cats. We humans have a lot to answer for.

Monroe 02-10-2013 09:27 AM

I've read about eradication efforts of non-native species in Australia. Everything is a slippery slope when we upset the native species. Pythons and introduced reptiles are a huge problem in Florida, US.
