Friday the 13th

Well tomorrow is the 13th, what are your superstitions regarding this day. And what other superstitions do you have?

I will burn sage in the house in the morning.

I avoid walking under ladders.
I don't open umbrellas indoors.
I don't put shoes on the table new or worn ones.
Salt thrown over the left shoulder.
I don't close pocket knives opened by someone else. No one closes my pocket knives either if I opened it.

I am looking forward to all of your responses.

stablemom 09-12-2013 07:22 PM

I am not superstitious. This is just another day....but it's Friday which is good!!!!

mrs. fitz 09-12-2013 07:24 PM

I don't put shoes on the bed. I believe in "find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck".

raedar63 09-12-2013 07:26 PM

My dad was born on friday the 13 , so I grew up with him saying that Friday the 13th was the luckiest day ever LOL. I routinely burn sage so I guess I'm good for tomorrow ;)

Tartan 09-12-2013 08:24 PM

Just another day for me.

Anniedeb 09-12-2013 09:22 PM

Not superstitious, born on Friday the 13th...but...I do "hedge my bets". I carry a rosary, two crosses, and a couple of religious medals in a little pouch in my purse....just in case....curious...why burning sage?

ScubaK 09-12-2013 09:40 PM

Curious...
Why burn SAGE?

Being Native American we burn sage in the house to keep bad spirits and bad feelings away. The smoke also carries our good wishes and prayers to Wakan Tanka.

ckcowl 09-13-2013 02:23 AM

just another day - and Friday (bonus) end of a long work week- out to dinner, nice... the only dates I worry about are family/friend birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, important days in our lives. just another day on the calendar is...just another day.

QuiltnNan 09-13-2013 03:15 AM

i'm not at all superstitious, but sometimes i say something appropriate to the situation just to go along with others

Annaquilts 09-13-2013 03:17 AM

Yes this! I am so ready for the weekend.

Suzette316 09-13-2013 03:30 AM

I can't think of a single superstition that I follow. I adore black cats, I've walked under many a ladder and broken my fair share of mirrors over the years. I have even opened an umbrella or two in the house! All that, and I'm still here to talk about it, relatively unscathed. :)

I guess superstitions are fun for some and debilitating to others, but I have none that I believe in or make me alter my day. :)

hamchips88 09-13-2013 03:42 AM

have to go to town today. will have to watch all idiots out there. oh! there is idiot drivers out there no matter what day it is.. :)

thequilteddove 09-13-2013 03:44 AM

I do my best NOT to think about how it's Friday the 13th! And I was do'n good, completely forgot til I saw this! *chants* Today will be a good day! Nothing bad will happen to me or anyone I love/care about. May the world stay safe today.

Oh wait, I say that prayer every day lol *waves arm over head, placing a imaginary protective barrier to ward off any evil happenings* There, that should do it lol

Anael 09-13-2013 04:04 AM

Well, I'm almost a believer :)
I tried to burn a few DVD's. First the programm didn't work, so I removed it from the computer and installed it again. Same problem. I downloaded another free programm, didn't work. Tried another one, that did work.
The DVD tray opened automaticly which I didn't expect, coffee cup was in the way, keyboard soaked so searched for a spare keyboard. When I was upstairs looking for the keyboard I heard a 'bang' .......tray opened again, coffee cup again in the way, fell and is now in the bin.
I think I'm going to watch a movie instead of FMQ :D :D

SewSassy 09-13-2013 05:58 AM

I was married on Friday the 13...best thing that ever happened to me.

mighty 09-13-2013 06:34 AM

Thank you!

I don't let anyone hand me the salt shaker..just set it on table within my reach. Never say the name of the Shakespeare play outloud, the one about Scotland. Don't whistle in the theater dressing rooms. Never tell a actor "good luck", it's allways "break a leg" And probably a few more that I don't even realize I either do or say:)

tessagin 09-13-2013 08:38 AM

Well today is HAPPY TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA DAY! If you come across a black cat about to cross your path, pat it on the head and smile, It will probably just want another pat and maybe a hug. If you come near a ladder, look up to see if some one could use some help to steady it. Be careful burning sage in the house, you may catch it on fire and don't want to risk anyone who has allergies. Also who in their right mind ever puts shoes on the table anyway, period. Think about where they have been walking on the ground. There may be someone behind you who gets salt in their eyes if you throw it over your shoulder (doesn't matter which one). I always make sure any pocket knife is closed no matter who opens it. Dangerous if in hands of wrong party. I choose to be excited that it's the end of a busy week and the beginning of the weekend. 1+3= 4 So think positive. Also most people usually see the banana peel. You can either pick it up out of the way or take the chance and not be aware of your surroundings and slip and fall on your behind. Opening an umbrella indoors, only if you have a leaky roof! SO HAPPY TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA DAY, EVERYONE! BE POSITIVE!:)

tessagin 09-13-2013 08:42 AM

Anael, you just need to watch where you put things.:)

Lottery tickets for me. Friday the 13th has brought me good luck in the past.

omacookie 09-13-2013 10:46 AM

My MIL always said that '' You never give a knife unless you include a penny " If you do it will cut friendship. Hugs

Neesie 09-13-2013 02:50 PM

I'm not the least bit superstitious. When I was young, I'd break as many superstitious rules as I could, just to prove them wrong. :D

Misty's Mom 09-13-2013 03:36 PM

Just another day.

lynnie 09-13-2013 05:12 PM

I usually burn some sage, don't know where it disappeared to, prob. son took it. I once upened an umbrella in my grandmas closet, bou could get the history on them on bing or google.roke a mirror. most superstitions go back in history. y

institches33 09-14-2013 04:03 AM

On Friday the 13th a flight from Helsinki was "Hel 666". The plane was full.

jitkaau 09-14-2013 06:27 AM

I'm not superstitious. The only reason that 13 became an unlucky number is because Judas was the 13th member at the Last Supper table. My belief is that it is a self fulfilling prophecy that things will go wrongly if you expect them to.

craftymatt2 09-14-2013 06:36 AM

Ok Ok, i was married on the 13th, i hate being married and its been 41 years, yuk

Grace MooreLinker 09-14-2013 07:26 AM

never really had superstitions, they just seem to clutter up the brain..

red-warrior 09-14-2013 07:54 AM

I had twin grandchildren born 9/13/13...healthy and natural birth, so it is a lucky day for me! I also have 4 other
family members born on Friday the 13!

Chasing Hawk 09-14-2013 08:46 AM

Thank you Ladies for your insights and comments. I very much enjoyed reading all of them.

mjhaess 09-14-2013 12:41 PM

I have all those superstitions too. I don't put hats on the table. I wouldn't want to break a mirror.

Me too. I also knock on wood as a precaution when I talk about things going well, though I know it doesn't matter, and if there's no wood handy, plastic or whatever might get knocked. I never heard of burning sage. It might smell nice?

I stopped picking up pennies and other small coins years ago figuring that it might be more thrilling to some little kid coming along later. If I'm missing out on luck, now I'll know why.

My mother said that one of her mother's superstitions was that you never give knives or other sharp objects as gifts because it will sever the relationship. I doubt my grandmother or mother actually believed that, but it may have been passed down through generations. I never think of giving such a gift without remembering that, but if someone has knives as a Christmas wish it wouldn't stop me. In fact, I'm pretty sure I gave my DS and DIL steak knives one time and so far it hasn't caused any problem. Knock on wood. :o

I am looking forward to all of your responses.

I'm certain you are not old enough, but you could have been my Mother. lol All except one about sage I have been warned about by her. (Of course, I guess the sage brush all around us covers that.) Now I just wish she was still here to fuss at me about these things. I was born May 13 and she always teased me that this was the problem with me. Finally, my DH discovered that I was not born on Friday! She got a big laugh over it!

nanacc 09-14-2013 07:01 PM

DM had others......Never borrow salt....something about going out the same door you came in.....Does anyone know the one about brooms?

OldHairTwister 09-15-2013 04:21 PM

If someone comes in one door but leaves by another it will bring you company.
