Fridge water filters are in every new fridge!
 

Ugh, I looked at new fridges and everyone had the water filter that needed to be replaced at least every six months. One had a filter that was $100 dollars and one had two filters. I wanted a fridge that didn't have the filter as I have a water filter in the water line going to the fridge we change out for $12 every six months. My fridge won't work without the filter! So check that out before buying a new fridge. Why have these filters? If people wanted filtered water then it should be an option. The filters are expensive and hard to find one that fits after a few years. The filter for my fridge started out to be about $40. Now it's over $70. DH cut the last fridge one we used for about a year it was clean as a whistle. The inline filter DH saws in half, other then contaminants we can't see that it claims to catch, that filter always looks clean too.

This sounds like some kind of hoax being thrown at consumers. This should be an optional filter and something that should not cost an arm and a leg. Thanks for the info. I won't be shopping for a fridge in the near future but will keep this in mind for when I do.

We used the first filter that came with our fridge & then when it was ready to replace we just removed it & never replaced it with a new one. Fortunately, you don't even need a filter in the fridge in order to run the ice maker. They are probably making them now where you have to have a filter actually in the slot before the ice maker will work (not sure about that but I wouldn't put it past the manufacturers to start making them that way.)

I never buy a fridge with ice maker. We are not ice users.

I think I saw one fridge that didn't have water and ice in the door and it came with matching freezer. I rarely use the water and ice feature but it was the only thing DH requested to have concerning the fridge. I was surprised at how many had computers screens on the door. Ugh.

Our fridge is 5 years old. It has an ice maker in the freezer and nothing on the door by my choice. It does not have a filter. I looked in the manual. Nothing. Called the mgr. also said no filter. But it is 5 years old. LG.

I just happened on to something. Yesterday my refrigerator indicated I needed to change the filter. This refrigerator will not dispense water nor ice if filter isn't working. So, I just pulled the filter down, twisted it a bit and then closed it back up. Guess what? It's working again and I didn't replace the filter.

Eventually the filter will have to come out or it will get slimy and gross inside. DH took the top fittings of the filter off and used those and that was enough for the fridge brain to think the filter is in place. He did the same with the lid lock on the new top load washer. Disconnected the thing. Lid locks are electric now and easy to disconnect. It's a small thing but that lid lock was something that made me want to beat the washer with a hammer.
