That was fun - - - -

Just got one of those "Can you hear me?" calls -

I said "No, can you speak a little louder, please?"

Click - end of call.

(I know - don't answer the phone - but it has been a very slow day here!)

dunster 06-25-2019 02:39 PM

I answer my phone too. There aren't that many junk calls, and sometimes they are entertaining. Sometimes I don't recognize the name on the caller ID but it turns out to be someone I do need to talk to.

Today I got a call where a recorded voice told me I was the only one on the conference call. I hung up; end of conference. Yesterday I had one where a man with a very deep voice (they always choose someone with a deep voice) started out by telling me I am harder to reach than the top of Mt. Everest. I didn't laugh or respond. He then said he was from a police group. I told him I didn't believe a thing he said and hung up.

Jingle 06-25-2019 03:20 PM

I have stopped a lot of useless time wasting calls by lifting receiver for a second or two then hanging up. They never call back.

Rhonda K 06-25-2019 04:15 PM

We just un-plugged the home phone today. Every time we tried to nap...one ringie-dingie. The important people in our lives have our cell numbers.

QuiltE 06-25-2019 05:47 PM

Have never heard of "can you hear me?" calls ....

Please explain, so I know what is yet to come ............. *sigh*

cjsews 06-25-2019 06:42 PM

“Can you hear me”. The caller is recording your response and using your voice saying yes to use for their gains

SallyS 06-26-2019 06:57 AM

Bearisgrey, You are fun! Feel like you are a friend and I look forward to and enjoy your posts. Thank you!

annievee 06-26-2019 10:13 AM

Never heard of this either--thanks for the heads up.

laurilli 06-26-2019 10:25 AM

I just got a notice today, that in my area an older person got took for $100,000!!! I don't have that much to be scamed out of, but WOW! The article went on to say for those of us who answer then "play" with the caller, the caller is recording your voice so they can patch together the answers they need to do whatever mischief they are intent on. I have caller ID and do not answer to any unknown number. This just makes it more important now days.

institches33 06-26-2019 10:26 AM

My granddaughter called after an accident. She had a broken nose so she didn't sound like herself.

Not only do I not have grandchildren, but my granddaughter had an Indian accent.

Her brother called me a few weeks later - same accident. Too funny.

jarenie 06-26-2019 10:49 AM

When I get a strange call I answer it with 'Hi! your on the air. What is your question?' They always hang up every time.

ube quilting 06-26-2019 03:37 PM

Say 'Hello, you're on the air".

Jarenie, we think alike, Haha.

nightquilter 06-26-2019 07:59 PM

I love to mess with these callers.( I know its not cool but....) Love the car warranty one, I acted totally crazy with one caller, asking which car had a lapsed warranty. So upset I had a car going to need work with no warranty, pretending to cry, beside myself. When all was said and done that man ask if he could take my name off his to call list. My husband said, ''well played''

Dakota Rose 06-27-2019 04:12 AM

When I get the grandchild one I ask which one because I have so many and they hang up because they don't have a name.

Same thing with my Mom- her "grandson", my son, called with a broken nose.............. but he was in jail!!! :D
I have to say though that it really rattled her. Thank goodness she realized after a bit that it was phony. But if she had dementia or something it could have been different.
My son closed his FB account after that because the caller had his name.

Cindy60545 06-27-2019 04:55 AM

I got one the other day that his english was so was terrible that I told him to press 1 for english & then hung up on him. He didn't call back after that.

I love the one where they want to help me with my federal student loan. Really? I'm 57. Yesterday, there was one where he wanted to offer me a job. I laughed and said no. Last week there was one where my cell phone was calling my cell phone. Interesting. If I had picked up would it have been busy? Our police department has actually said, if you don't recognize the number or if it doesn't come up in your contacts, don't answer. Also, to contact your carrier to ban out of country calls. If you don't make them. So many senior citizens are getting scammed.

bearisgray 06-27-2019 05:15 AM

I think that almost any age group can be vulnerable to phishing and scamming phone calls, e-mails, donation requests, etc.

leonf 06-27-2019 06:49 AM

Somewhere I read that as we age something in our brain changes and makes us more vulnerable to scams. But yes, there are some people who are just too trusting. Scammers can mimic any number they want to to try to make it feel like a "safe"call. No such thing as a safe call anymore.

They're trying to get you to say "yes" so they can use your response. If they ask if I'm "Margaret" is just respond with "speaking", that is, if I answer the call at all. They can't use that response for anything.

Great idea. I'll have to try it.

LindaJane 06-27-2019 08:00 AM

I asked one for his extension number to call back after I looked up the number for the well known business he was calling me from and he hung up.

I have caller ID that pops up on my TV screen and the phone is still in my husband's name even though he has been deceased for many years. One day I got a call with our ID popping up. It gave me pause for a second to see his name appear. Since then I have gotten several calls from my own number. It is creepy.

This is what I often do, as well.

Anniedeb 06-27-2019 11:40 AM

I did answer a call, because the recording started with "Grandma...can you help...." So I answered and said "is this Zach?" A man came on to tell me Zach was in jail and needed bond money. I said "Good!! You keep him. I'm tired of all his mess-ups!" Then hung up. Zach and I had a good laugh because he was sitting right next to me the whole time!!

gramadona 06-28-2019 06:20 PM

Ha, ha, ha! You guys are a crack up!
“ Press one for English!”
“Hi! You’re on the air.” .
I’m laughing till my stomach hurts!
You are all so clever and fun! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

quiltingcandy 06-28-2019 07:16 PM

We usually will not answer a number we do not recognize, but once in a while if I am waiting for a call back from a company they use cel phones that are not recognized so I will answer. Last week my phone rang and my DH asked me to answer so I did. It was a scammer, and it was the Soc. Security nonsense - so I said, "Yea I win!" The caller said what did you win? "My DH bet me $20.00 you wouldn't call back because I informed the guy last week that my DH works for the FBI and investigates scam calls you would never call me again, and hear you are and I have your number!" He hung up.
My mother and father used to say sometimes I could be a real smart alec - goes they were right.

Hubby and I sleep days, so we keep our phones on constant "Do Not Disturb" mode. If a caller isn't on our contacts list, they get sent straight to voice mail without our phones making a peep. Later, we Google the numbers that called us, and quite often discover that they're scammers or telemarketers. I've even had a bogus "collection agency" (actually scammers!) calling me multiple times a day. Scammers and telemarketers get put on our blacklist, which means that if they call again from the same number, they get a recording saying our phone has been disconnected or is no longer in service. :D Quite often they'll call again from a different number, but we just keep right on blacklisting the new numbers as the calls come in. It's not perfect, but it does eventually slow down the number of calls. :)

I used to have a magazine company call me constantly about buying subscriptions. Finally one day I told the girl yes, I'd love to. I ordered about 10 different ones and when it came time to pay I told her that was cool because I had just filed for bankruptcy and I'd be putting the bill under it. She started studdering and said what. I told her again, I had just filed and since it wasn't complete I could put their company under it. She said I guess and then hung up. I've never heard from them again. The things we have to do. I hate that we spend so much for cell phones but still have to deal with telemarketers. I get more on my cell than my house phone.

I love that approach, will have to remember that!

patsews 06-29-2019 09:08 AM

I got one on my cell phone that said home was calling. This call happened 4 times during a 2 hour time frame. I finally put it on my reject list to get them to stop. Interesting that my house was calling my cell phone number. My cell phone number is my old land line number. Dispensed with the land line years ago. I suspect that someone thought since kids are out of school this would be a good way to mask their number and get me to answer the phone. No kids at home anymore, husband would have used his own cell phone to call me. Wonder how many times this worked to get someone to answer their phone to then find out that it is a telemarketer call?

ptquilts 06-29-2019 01:37 PM

I have 2 cell phones and a Google Voice number that doesn't ring anywhere, just takes messages. Guess which one gets the most calls? The one where no one will ever, ever answer, I love it. And they don't leave messages either.

For a fun way to handle robocalls, look up "Hello this is Lenny" on Youtube.
