My mom was in a department store and came upon a little girl (about 5) and her mother. Little girl said, "Mom I am getting hungry". Mom said, "Well it is close to lunch time, what would you like to eat?" Little girl replies, "Cupcakes! I want cupcakes for lunch." Mom said, "You cannot eat cupcakes for lunch. Please think of something else." Little girl is quiet and soon replies, "Then why did you ask me what I wanted?!"

I always wonder why parents/teachers ask children opened ended questions like that when the child really isn't free to make any choice they want to make. Why not give them a few acceptable ideas and let them choose amoung those. Just wondering if that wouldn't be less stressful to both the adult and child. And yes, as both a parent and a teacher, I was guilty of doing that very thing many times myself. :)
