I am guessing that most school districts gave up on geography rather than face changes in borders and place names, but I would like to think MY learning disabled students would not make THAT error.

Well, and then there are those who still don't realize that Hawaii is a State and still tell us that when "we come to the States or back in the States....".

Funny, but sad too. I live an hour from Lake Michigan. Lots of people don't realize how HUGE the Great Lakes are.

I used to live in London.......Ohio.....and I've heard people say I'm from England. Apparently they stop listening after I say London.

Reminded me of some years ago when I wanted to know where there was a Tower Records store in NH.
The Tower gal asked what state New Hampshire was in.

It's disheartening at the very least <sigh>. I wound up homeschooling our son for five years for that very reason.

I actually had a customer service rep get into an argument with me because I told her I was in Washington state, which was on the west coast. She insisted the only states on the west coast were Oregon and California.

Unfortunately it ain't just geography!!!

I don't think any schools around here are teaching geography anymore. my son never did until i started homeschooling him. he thinks maps and stuff are cool and has a lot of fun with it.

I could never keep the states straight until we started traveling the country by car. Now I can look at a map without words and tell what state is which.
