I have a free Redbox movie code to use for my birthday. Any one have a recommendation. We do not go out to movies much..so few seem to be worth the money! I know sex and violence sells, but for me, not so much!

ptquilts 07-27-2011 07:43 AM

don't know if you are looking for new movies or old, we just watched Marty (from the 50's) with Ernest Borgnine. What a great story, good acting, and it won 4 Oscars.

Secretariat has been showing on Dish recently. Love Diane Lane in it. Great movie for all ages.

Happy Birthday!

RenaB 07-27-2011 08:08 AM

what kind of movies do you like?

annthreecats 07-27-2011 08:11 AM

I recently enjoyed "The Kings Speech."

yonnikka 07-27-2011 08:14 AM

watch the Harry Potter movies, in order. Pick your favorite actor (Robert Redford), or go to IMBD movie database to research oldies but goodies, for example, search for Charlie Chaplin or Jane Fonda, or Hugh what's his name....

MIJul 07-27-2011 08:28 AM

"Dr. Zhivago" if you want vintage. I can watch that anytime.

My vote for recent is "Secretariat" - I went to see that 3 times at the theater - wonderful, well made and clean entertainment.

Zhillslady 07-27-2011 08:46 AM

I recently watched Burlesque with Cher. It does a good job of showing what the old shows like that were and I love musicals. If you like drama the Lincoln Lawyer was quite good also.

plainpat 07-27-2011 09:32 AM

Steel Magnolias & Radio with Cuba Gooding...actually, all CG movies are good.

QuiltnNan 07-27-2011 09:36 AM

i'd like to suggest The King's Speech. I just love anything with Colin Firth.

JulieR 07-27-2011 09:39 AM

Pride and Prejudice - the Kiera Knightley version - is my movie of choice right now.

What kind of movie are you looking for?

BellaBoo 07-27-2011 09:48 AM

The one movie that surprised me as being very good was Avatar. I watched it with the feeling I wouldn't like it at all but I sure was wrong. Great movie.

Oh that was really good, and I didn't think I'd like it either. Good suggestion!

pipp5 07-27-2011 11:37 AM

Have you seen "The King's Speech" yet? I really enjoyed it!

Kherrin 07-27-2011 11:52 AM

My husband who is a shot 'em blow 'em up movie type even watch Avatar and he definitely does not like the sci-fi movies and said he really like Avatar...it is really a love story...very good movie.

gollytwo 07-28-2011 03:16 AM

I just watched The Proposal - a romantic comedy, easy viewing and enjoyable
My favorite all time movie is The Third Man - an oldie with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton
For a multi part movie - nothing beats Colin Firth's Pride and Prejudice

coachmatthewsvhs 07-28-2011 03:22 AM

The Kings' Speech is a fine watch

Edie 07-28-2011 04:53 AM

I loved Avatar, The King's Speech, and I also have my favorites:
Princess Bride, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, Secret Garden (the original), Little Women, Meet Me In St. Louis. I too, don't like violent (ultra) or cussy movies. Enjoy your gift! Get out the popcorn!!!! Edie

kathidahl 07-28-2011 06:31 AM

Thanks all...I believe we will go with The Kings Speech...and for the record we have seen most of the older ones mentioned and "enjoyable!"

Actually, My mother, age 95, remembers that time with the King and Wallace Simpson and his speech problem. It was very similar to my father's stutter. So that show made it even more informative for me. Also my father was left handed and had to change to right handed and that's when he started to stutter. Just some totally uninteresting information here. Edie

If you want a thinker Inception was excellent. We go to few movies but hubby and I loved that one

Ditto. One of the best movies I've seen.

King's Speech was great, you'l like it

madamekelly 07-28-2011 08:22 PM

A great uplifting movie is "I am Sam", or "The Other Sister".

JADE D 07-29-2011 07:10 AM

I'll add a recommendation for The King's Speech. Also Red with Helen Mirren and Bruce Willis. Have you seen The Queen with Helen Mirren? I thought that one was good. Anything with Peter O'Toole such as The Lion in Winter and Becket.
Then, there's always Mr. Roberts (one of my all time favorites.) Some of the Harry Potter movies are good; others (like the last one) not so hot. Watch them in order. Anyone seen the latest Harry Potter?

nativetexan 07-29-2011 08:10 AM

The Kings Speech is wonderful

cassie69emt 07-30-2011 06:43 PM

I would also recommend "The King's Speech". It is based on a true story and is a treasure.

kathidahl 07-30-2011 07:53 PM

Thanks all...turned out I could not get The Kings Speech, so we picked up "The Lincoln Lawyer" and we ENJOYED it completely. I will still try to get The Kings Speech elsewhere.

JudyBsquared 07-30-2011 07:59 PM

The King's Speech - especially if you like Colin Firth.
