Great Book I Just Finished Reading

I want to recommend a really good book to you all. It's called "The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom. Unbelievably, it's her first novel. It takes place in the late 1700s, on a plantation. The story is told through the eyes of two narrators: One, a slave born on the plantation, and the other, a young Irish girl who comes to live there as an indentured servant. The writing style is wonderful and the story is so compelling you can't put it down. I really enjoyed it. Felt like I was there and knew the characters.

This book is historical fiction, well researched by the author.

Reading is my second favorite thing to do...My problem is I have to finish it and am known to stay up till 3am even if I have to get up at 7am. I will look for that book, it sounds great.

I love Emilie Richard's Quilting Stories. Wedding Ring, Endless Chain, Lover's Knot. Will pick up your book, sounds very interesting.

another book about the deep south you might like is Sue Monk Kidd's "The Invention of Wings." Very engrossing and based on truth. A compelling read as well

There are several copies on Abebooks.com for under 4.00 with free shipping.

I've heard of it... will look for it or order it from the library.

I found my copy of The Kitchen House at a rummage sale for $.25!

I agree that "The Invention of Wings" is a really good read!

KnitnutBZ 08-11-2015 07:03 AM

Love historical novels. I'm reading The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly. Really good. Thanks for the new one.

Sounds good. I just added it to my wish list for my kindle. It will have to wait for the price to come down a little before I get it.

I just finished "Gone Girl." It had a few twists and the ending was something I would never have guessed.

I read this book several years ago and it was quite good.

Sounds like a good one. Going to check it out and see if it is available on Kindle. Thanks.

I read this book just last year and I too thought it was great. The end was just a bit drawn out for me but the rest of the book made it all well worth reading. Fascinating read and story. Afterwards, I had to google the names to check out the history behind it all.

Guess I had better go check out The Kitchen House. I am not sure why I like to read these kinds of books but I am drawn to them. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks for the info - I love a good historical fiction.

Material Witness 08-11-2015 02:37 PM

Historical fiction is the only type of history I can stand, and I love it. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks! Reading is a joy, but I get tired of some of the drivel (books written according to a 'formula'). It's good to get some new recommendations.

regm 08-12-2015 03:17 AM

Going to put some of those titles on my "to read" list.

Been meaning to read this....I made a note of the title some time ago.

Beachbaby12 08-12-2015 04:09 AM

I got the book yesterday at a used book store for $6 and hope to enjoy it as much as you did. Thank you for the recommendation.

There's SO MUCH 'drivel' out there... I can't stand a book where I can easily anticipate the plot. I avoid a book if the author's name is bigger than the title, on the cover! Bad writing, books that turn into romance novels, formula writing--- UGH. I'm picky about what I will read.

WMUTeach 08-12-2015 07:11 AM

thanks for the tip and recommendation. I love to read and historical fiction is my favorite, hands down. I will now make a trip to the library and do the search for "The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom.

Cecil 08-12-2015 09:38 AM

Those prices on Kindle never seem to come down.

Sandi 08-12-2015 09:40 AM

Thanks so much for this posting- I'm always looking for "good" historical fiction!

snel001 08-12-2015 02:36 PM

Oh I really enjoyed Emilie Richard's books as well. I have re-read all that I have twice!

I've just begun Dianna Gabaldon's Outlander series, which my daughter sent for Christmas, the first three books in the series. I'm late to the table on these, they've been out for a while, but find myself thoroughly engrossed in her writing style. Anyone else read them?

Sounds great! I'm going to check it out. I've just ordered the 12 Poldark books and am waiting for the first 3 (have received 4-12). I need one to fill in the wait! Thanks!!

I just read "The Kitchen House" - a wonderful book.

Elise1 08-29-2015 11:53 AM

I picked up The Kitchen House at the library, based on your recommendation. It is a wonderful read so far.

Thank you!

nativetexan 08-29-2015 04:39 PM

thank you. i just put a hold on one at my local library.
and yes, i've read all of Gabaldon's books i think. Loved them.

starshine 08-29-2015 04:50 PM

I haven't read these books but did read Cane River by Lalita Tademy. She wrote it as a novel combining information she found in researching her family tree with other components of life at the historic time it took place. It too was a good read.

Thanks! It was my turn to buy a book for my Kindle friends to share. This will be a good one. We have a shared Kindle account and every month or so each one buys a new listing to share. We don't add the free books, mostly the best sellers or books with high ratings from fellow readers. The book can only be read by one person at a time so if I buy it I read it then put it on the account to share. The next person who wants to read it will and then put it back in the cloud to share and so forth. It works great as there are always new books on the account to choose from.

I love reading happy books with nice characters in them. Why waste time reading depressing books? You're suggestions sound very nice. Thank you. Brett
