I was just curious as to how many of you know what ground cherries are. In French they are called cerises de terre. What they are is little tiny berries that are inside little lanterns. You peel off the papery lantern part and inside is a little berry about as big as a gooseberry. My grandmother and aunts used to make a compote out of them so I tried too and it is so good. I put it over plain yogurt or ice cream and it is delicious. I cook them with some sugar, lemon juice and a vanilla pod. They are very popular in Quebec but hardly at all here in Ontario.

Never heard of it here in California.

My DH loves ground cherry pie and preserves for toast. You can buy seeds for them in most vegetable catalogs. I believe they are a member of the nightshade family though not poisonous like nightshade. If you plant a row of them in the garden sometimes the seed will winter over and self sow.

My hubby says he knows and we have a friend that has them in their front yard - I had never heard of them.

They are great - I grew up eating them. I have a seed book where you can order the seeds - I might do that for next years planting.

Haven't had any for years. A ground cherry custard pie would taste wonderful right now!

A girl in my office and I looked for them for a long time for her, never did find any. She transferred from Montreal so it is a real Quebec thing. We took a trip to montreal and she bought 3 boxes of them and I think by the time we drove home there was a little over 1 box left of them.

Totally yummy , but they never make it to anything like a jam or pie. We eat them. They are gone in minutes. :)

Ground cherry seeds are not generally carried by the major manufacturers, so you won't find them at the stores. Look online. Plenty of small seed growers provide them. Since they are not hybrids, they come true if you save the seeds yourself and plant them the following year.
