I see the rose too...lookslike the wildroses here, just love the color!

My grandmother used to have tables full of them and did grow them from leaves. I can't grow them from plants. A friend always uses some kind of rooting powder when she roots something.

I love growing these. I have some pics of the ones I gave my Mom. I'll try to get them on here.

The first three starting from the top are trailors. Small single lavenar petite blooms.

This is only part of the violets. I kept an episcia. And trying to get starts going for new pots.

Sometimes if someone is working the flowers at a store and they have leaves that have gotten broken, I'll ask them if I can have them. But you don't know what you are getting until it blooms.
Also the best thing about starting from leaves, you don't know how many plants you will end up with. Some leaves produce lots of new plants. You just have to seperate them.

I do the same, using the root powder. I just watered the soil. Had no problem. Worked great!

Pretty pictures, Thanks for posting!

I can't wait to show a pic of my episcia better known as chocolate soldier. It will probably later in the Spring. I have a lot of repotting to do.

Betty and Carrie Anne.... Yup, you caught me!! LOL It is from my climbing rose that adorns the front of my house. I brought the last bloom of the season in the house before we were to have a frost that night. I love this rose plant.....it is a mass of pink all summer.

I love my flowers Patti. I can't wait to take new pictures this year. I have lots of pics on my fb. But when I start adding the 2011 pics, I'll start deleteing those. Maybe we should start a garden discussion to show our beautiful pics.

Yes - it's easy, fun, inexpensive, not time consuming. When you do get it to grow in soil - it's a wonderful feeling!

Good luck!

Oh, I know Quilting Here! I have a variegated leaf in a pot now with white colored variegated leaves coming out now. I can't wait until they get bigger. Maybe I'll get back into growing a bunch of violets again. I love it when all of them bloom at the same time. They are beautiful.
For some reason, the only ones I have trouble out of are the miniature ones. They don't like me! :-)

Ok... My sister gave me three plants that were nice.... all died in a couple of weeks.
Guess you would say I have a black thumb.
I just do not have any luck with house plants.

HummerGardenCrafts 04-01-2011 05:39 AM

Nena don't feel bad. I know people who can kill the plastic potted plants. :-) That's what my daughter in law tells me she does.
No kidding my lucky bamboo was growing beautifully and getting so tall. She came in last July and moved them to put her small suitcase in the bathroom. Guess what, they have been turning yellow ever since. I've done everything I know to do to get them to start going back to green. I told her not to touch any more of my plants.
We had a big laugh over that one.

I was wondering, has anyone grown tiny violets?

HummerGardenCrafts 04-01-2011 05:47 AM

I can't remember what color mine are until they bloom. I need to make them this time when they bloom. Do you have any trailors Connie?
We could swap some leaves if you want?
I have raised the mini ones before. But they are the hardest for me to raise. Eventually I end up looseing them. I may try my luck again when I run up on some I like.

So you can pluck a leaf off an african violet you like in a store and go home and start your own. I did that so many times. I wasn't in a hurry and I was thrilled to see it grow frm just a leaf. Is your grandmas a doble flower or single . Is it a ruffle leaf or flat. Just trying to visulize it.Good luck!!!

I finally found a picture in my albums of my episcia. They are beautitul plants.

Pzazz 04-17-2011 02:48 PM

My step-daughter is taking first year at university....about a 5-6 hour drive away. She was asking if she could have one of my African violets. Unbeknownst to her, I had been starting one for her, and it was ready to go. She has called me 2 or 3 times a week asking how to know if it is happy. LOL She just called again to tell me it got knocked off her desk. She wanted to know if it would survive. She put all the bits and the dirt back in the pot, so we will see.

That happens to the best of us Patti! I've knocked them off. Broke leaves trying to get dead flowers off. I just stick them in water.

Pzazz 04-17-2011 03:06 PM

My DH knocked one off this past winter. It was in full bloom....beautiful foliage. Looked like it just came form a nursery. It is gradually coming back, but no where near what it was pre-dump. :( Oh well...the ups and downs of growing plants!!

Soon as the weather gets warm enough, I've got to repot mine. They need it bad. I may put my episcia in a long pot. That's how my grandmother grew hers.
I want a greenhouse. It doesn't have to be super big. I just love potting and growing plants.
