Hand Stitched Felt Christmas Tree Decorations

2 Attachment(s)
Today I finished stitching the last of Twelve Christmas Tree Ornaments for teaching samples for our small local community Craft Group. They asked me to teach this project at our Christmas in July meeting. Our Craft day is tomorrow and they will choose which decorations they want to make and maybe they will need me to do kits up for them. I need to give them a materials list tomorrow and as this is a sit & stitch group they have to be hand stitched. I started this project on Monday and I had to make templates for most of them so it has been an intense project and I found myself stitching into the wee hours. However, I really enjoyed making them, maybe because I like to fiddle. They are all made from felt with a couple having fabric appliques on them.

Gorgeous! I bought a set to make for my sewing room Christmas tree from a vendor. I wish I'd seen yours 1st! Maybe you can either sell your patterns or post them on our tutorial page???

Yes, I made my own templates as I didn't have instructions for these, I just had the pictures.

That is quite okay, I made my own templates as all I had were pictures from the internet. I just cut and sewed and looked at the images for direction. They were not difficult to make, I used back stitch, stem stitch, blanket stitch & fly stitch for the embroidery and joining the pieces together. I just used beads, ribbon etc from my stash. I found the easiest way to cut the holly leaves all the same, was to trace the leaf design onto steam a seam, hand press it to the felt, cut out and peel both paper and sticky web away. Good luck with your Guild, there are lots of pictures on the internet and Pinterest. I have a lot saved here, some I have pinned and some of my own making.

silverfoxmag 06-04-2015 04:42 AM

Betty J., I love them all, what a wonderful job you did on them, without patterns to boot!!!!! I love Cardinals but if I had to choose one ornament it would be the red bells, are those buttons along the edges?

running1 06-04-2015 05:07 AM

I love hand stitched ornaments... these are really nice!! Wish I could come to your group!!

Judith1005 06-04-2015 05:07 AM

Silly me! I was looking for the "tree" ornament. Guess what, didn't find any trees. Did find some really cute tree ornaments, though.

Wow!! Really nice. I so wish I could do that, but my hands are not so great now.

Beautiful! BettyJ, I already knew you did wonderful handwork, so this was not a surprise. But how I would love to make all of those ornaments!

No, they are not buttons. They are a little gold jewellery kind of flower bead that I attached with a small gold bead. I think stitching on tiny gold beads to form a flower would be effective as well.

silverfoxmag 06-05-2015 06:34 AM

BJ, thanks for your reply, will try making a pattern for the bells, wish me luck.

roserips 06-05-2015 08:01 AM

I love all of the extrra details you added with embroidery and buttons. Great projects for your group.

pal 06-05-2015 10:39 AM

To those of you who need a little help with the drawing - try tracing cookie cutters on to freezer paper. Then iron the freezer paper onto your felt & cut out! After that, you're on your own!

Pretty ornaments.

Lace & Button Wreath

2 Attachment(s)
I think I have the bug for hand stitched ornaments at present. Today I made this Lace & Button Ornament. A great way to use up those horded up buttons in your button stash. I made a wreath template using a 4 inch and 1 1/2 circle template, I hand blanket stitched around the centre, stitched the gold cord to the inside top centre and then blanket stitched around the outer edge, stuffing not too firmly with poly fill as I went. I joined and gathered a
2 inch x 18 1/2 inch piece of lace to fit just larger than the centre of the wreath, I slipped stitched the lace into place and then added the buttons and a ribbon bow trim with the hot glue gun. I stitched through the button holes before gluing them on so as to give them a stitched on effect. I can see possibilities of making a heart ornament in a similar manner. While I am addicted to machine sewing I love the relaxation hand stitching gives you. Now to do the necessary chores............
